AU Hoops Podcast

Here are five key plays/sequences from American's 67-64 loss to Boston U.  1. American starts 5-5 from field, grabs 14-4 leadThe Eagles haven't had many fast starts this year and have played consistently from behind. So it was a good sign to see them come out sharp with all five starters scoring in the opening minutes to burst out to a double-digit lead, including a Charlie Jones 3. Charlie, often maligned for passing up open looks, has made one in three straight games.  2. Boston goes on 17-3 run for 34-32 leadSimilar to the Colgate game at home, American coughed up its early lead. During one stretch, the Eagles turned it over on four of five possessions. Meanwhile, BU freshman Tyler Scanlon — whom AU recruited heavily — scored on a nifty runner and a 3, Fanning and Eric Johnson added 3s for the Patriot League's best outside shooting team, and Justin Alston began to establish himself in the post.  3. Justin Alston takes over for TerriersMark Gasperini did a good job staying on the floor and not getting in foul trouble, but he was also maybe not quite aggressive enough guarding Alston. It's a fine line. BU's 6-8 forward helped the Terriers back from a 46-40 deficit by scoring on four of five possessions, mostly against Gasperini, as BU retook the lead.  4. American misses easy ones in second halfThe difference between the American offense in the first and second half is that the Eagles made their layups in the first. They continued executing well in the second, but simply couldn't finish — going 10-27 vs. 15-27 on field goals. That, really, was the difference. Alex Paquin got to the bucket and missed. Gasperini misfired from in the paint multiple times. Delante Jones (not in video) missed one, as did Charlie Jones.  5. No foul called, costing American 3 secondsIt's beyond me how the refs didn't call Kevin Brown for a foul grabbing Eric Johnson right in front of the American bench late in the game with the Eagles trailing 65-64. Call the foul, and AU would have had 3.5-4 seconds left after BU free throws. Instead, the refs didn't blow their whistles until Johnson made a pass to Scanlon and 1.1 seconds remained. All AU could try was a Charlie Jones heave to Gasperini, who came down out of bounds. After a lengthy review, the officials put 0.8 seconds left, but all BU had to do was get the ball in bounds to end the game. During a six-game losing streak, it's rare to have luck on your side. At the very least, a foul should've been called with more than 3 seconds remaining.

Navy comes out on 11-0 run. After coming off  a disappointing loss on Monday to Holy Cross and tying a season high of 23 turnovers, it was interesting to see how the Eagles would react to another 1-3-1 zone. Brutal start for AmericanFinally home after a very difficult road trip, you would have expected the Eagles to come out sharp in a very winnable game. The opposite was true. The Eagles were dismal on the offensive end, starting 3-17 from the field — with very few good looks or attempts near the basket. They weren't better at the other end, as the Black Knights too...
