American lost its Patriot League opener at home to Loyola, 68-66. Here are our selected five key plays/sequences from the loss.  1. Jarred Jones in the paintFrom the opening tip, it was clear that American had no answer for Loyola's 6-6 Jarred Jones. Before the game on his weekly radio show, Mike Brennan hinted that you couldn't guard the versatile Jones with a little guy or a big guy, and his words proved to be a harbinger of what was to come. Jones paced Loyola during a hot-shooting, paint-dominated first half for both teams.  2. American gets to free-throw line, ties it up 52-52Boosted by unexpected contributions from Alex Paquin, getting to the free-throw line, and a clutch Delante Jones 3, American went on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 52.  3. Loyola answers with 14-4 run, takes controlAs you can see, as was the theme all night, American couldn't control Loyola's penetration with three different guys getting to the rim during the pivotal period of the game. After the Greyhounds' 14-4 burst, the game seemed all but done... 4. American makes late run, gets within twoJust when American seemed done, down 66-56 with a minute and a half left, the Eagles made a late run. Aided by three Loyola turnovers, the Eagles used four three throws (on six attempts) and 3s by Jalen Rhea and Sa'eed Nelson (game-high 22) to get within 68-66 5. Sa'eed Nelson has final shot attempt blockedAfter American got a great stop on a Mark Gasperini block out of bounds and then Charlie Jones' defense on Jones, the Eagles took a timeout with 6.7 seconds left. However, Nelson didn't have much time or space to operate (notice the congestion near the top of the key) and his desperation 3 as time expired was blocked by Loyola's Andre Walker, sealing the Greyhounds' victory.

Full video above and selected quotes below. Mike BrennanOPENING STATEMENT"Loyola's a good team. Jarred Jones and Andre Walker, they're a handful. To be honest, I thought we did an OK job on Walker and he still had 18 and 7 (rebounds). We just didn't have enough. I thought we battled back, we fought, but that's a typical league game."ON LOYOLA SCORING IN THE PAINT"A lot of drives, a lot of guys ...

Patriot League Power Rankings (Week 1)
Throughout the conference season, we'll provide our Patriot League power rankings tracking all the teams in the league. We'll use statistical analysis, the eye test, and more to evaluate where the 10 teams stand from week to week. The efficiency margin tool does not determine our rankings but rather helps guide us in our analysis. For example, do we believe American is the second-to-worst team in the league? No. KenPom's model isn't favorable to the Eagles. See below for our rankings, and of course feedback...

Full video above with selected quotes below. HOW MUCH WAS UNH's SHOOTING (12-17 on 3s) DUE TO DEFENSE?"I thought we did a good job — there were spurts where we contested every shot. But I thought there were too many times where we'd have a guy in a guy and then sophomore defense against a senior offensive player who's on a good team, knows what winning's about. Head coach Mike Brennan spoke after American fell 71-54 to Howard, dropping the Eagles to 1-6. Full video above and selected quotes below.BIGGEST REASON FOR THE TURNOVERS?“Yeah, just indecision. I mean, they play the zone a lot of different ways so we probably prepared for too many of them. Probably should have just picked one, had an idea of, this is what we’re gonna try to do. So I think I probably threw too much at them in preparation for such a young team. You’ve got too many options, you choose none of...
