Buddhism Guide

Buddhism Guide Podcast

This podcast is pragmatic, secular and makes complicated Buddhist principles easy to understand. Yeshe is a Buddhist monk. He is from England and teaches meditation, Buddhist philosophy and mindfulness. Yeshe spent several years in a monastery in the foothills of the Himalayas teaching young monks basic Buddhist philosophy and meditation. He now offers teachings freely to all in a manner that is unpretentious and clear. He does not demand students to blindly accept what he says, but instead invites them to examine their own minds and experiences to discover the validity of Gautama Buddha’s teachings. Yeshe quietly demonstrates Gautama Buddha’s teaching on compassion through the charitable trust ‘Sangye Menla’ that he founded in 2008 in Chandigarh, Northern India. The trust provides medical assistance and care to people from the Himalayan region in India.

Seeing Clearly - The Buddha Dharma Series
In the fourth truth, he explained what path we can take to start the process of destroying the three poisons. This path is known as the eightfold path. This path is not a religious path and doesn’t require rituals, prayers, ceremonies, or even for you to become a Buddhist. It can be looked upon as a path that leads to us living a responsible life and so anybody can practise it. So, it isn’t a Buddhist practice, it is more of a lifestyle practice. The Causes Of Suffering - The Buddha Dharma Series
The first noble truth describes how life has suffering running through it and in the second truth Buddha gave some of the reasons for this suffering. There is not just one cause of our suffering, as there is not one cause of anything. Things come into being through a series of causes and conditions, and that is the same for our suffering. However, there are three main things that cause us emotional and psychological suffering, namely, the three poisons. They are clinging desire, anger and aversion and unawa...

The First Noble Truth - The Buddha Dharma Series
Buddha‘s first teaching was on the four noble truths, and it still remains the very foundation on which Buddhism is built. It was these four realities that the Buddha came to understand during his meditation under the bodhi tree, and they provide a conceptual framework for all of Buddhist thought. The first reality is ‘There is suffering.’ The word suffering here means a dissatisfaction, discontentment, an uneasy feeling running through our lives. My latest book 'Open Awareness, Open Mind' is available no...

Emotional Suffering
What would you say if I told you the largest part of your emotional suffering was caused by yourself? I expect you would be doubtful or even shocked, but it is true. The way we live our lives, our beliefs, biases, concepts and social conditioning all cause us to mentally suffer. By suffering I mean our minds get disturbed, we become disillusioned, dissatisfied, discontented. This often results in stress, anxiety and depression. None of these are helpful or healthy. This podcast is adapted from my latest bo...

Understanding Consciousness
The Yogacara school of Buddhism states that there are eight consciousnesses, and these teach us how to understand consciousness, so we can free ourselves from afflictive emotions, such as anger, selfishness and so on. Personally, I have always found this school of thought to be very logical, even though later schools of Buddhism refute some of the Yogacara findings. I believe that if we want to understand our minds, we need to understand our consciousness. My latest book 'Open Awareness, Open Mind' is avai...

Can We Forgive The Unforgivable?
When you have lost a loved one through a terrorist act, a drunken driver or any other act of violence, how do you forgive the unforgivable? Does forgiveness mean we just accept what has happened and we surrender to defeat? No, I don’t believe it does. Forgiveness is not about helplessly accepting, giving up, surrendering to defeat, being weak or avoiding justice. It is about how you respond to the terrible wrong and how you can let go of the past and move forward with your life. My latest book 'Open Aware...

The Eightfold Path - An Audio Blog Compilation
This is a compilation of several episodes of Buddhism Guides podcasts. This compilation is on the eight-fold path, which is the path leading to the end of suffering. It was Buddha's first teaching and it still remains one of the most important teachings in Buddhism. The teaching is not only still relevant, but also easily implemented into today's world. As this is a compilation of several podcasts, the sound quality differs between the tracks - I apologise for this....

A Sense of Self
In Buddhism, one of the most difficult teachings for people to understand is anatman or non-self. The doctrine states that in humans there is no permanent entity that can be called a self or a soul. This denial of “any Soul or Self” is what distinguishes Buddhism from other major religions, such as Christianity and Hinduism, and gives Buddhism its uniqueness. This sense of being a permanent, solid, autonomous self is an illusion. The problem is this illusion doesn’t fit in with our ordinary experience. We ...

Mindful Communication
I believe social media has replace our ability to communicate in an honest and thoughtful way. Social skills we once learned by having a face-to-face conversation have been diminished. We seem to have lost the capacity to be thoughtful and kind. We don’t seem to be able to give our opinions without being disrespectful to one another. This is where mindfulness can help us improve our digital communication skills....

Understanding non-dual awareness
This is a special episode and is recorded live at the Prajna Meditation Centre in Northern India. It is a difficult teaching but Lama Yeshe explains it in his easy to understand teaching style. Our lives are built on assumptions. We assume the world is exactly as we’ve been taught and that our personal memory speaks the truth. For the most part, our lives are virtual, a projection of the mind. We’re so busy with our conceptual lives that we fail to truly experience the here and now. In other words, we over...

Thought Transformation Part Two
The Eight Verses of Thought Transformation is an important text from Tibetan spiritual writings known as lojong (mind training). The root text was written by the eleventh-century meditator Langri Tangpa Dorje Senghe. These verses explain how we can see life through the eyes of compassion, and not through our self-cherishing ego. The more we meditate on thought transformation, the more compassionate we become. You meditate on these verses by reciting each verse and then pausing to contemplate its meaning. ...

How To Reduce Your Suffering
In Buddhism, there is a practice called Mind Training and within this practice there is a section on reducing one’s suffering. Now, suffering here means a dissatisfaction with life, an unease, a discontentment and a feeling that life could be better. The following four methods are described in mind training as the best way to stop the suffering of all beings, and bringing them, and ourselves, happiness. Of course, we have to be realistic and understand that life is not always going to be happy, and it is an...
