This podcast was one of my favorites for a while. But I just can’t with Phoebe’s constant breathless incredulity. Her delivery seems so anachronistic attimes. Worse than anachronistic, I notice that her portrayal of things I have some reason to kiwi about is way off base—in a husky leacemirnto beaver way.
Hear the show once and you will know her voice and cadence forever. It's a refreshingly smart show without that horrible music to hijack your nervous system. No repeating what has already been said. It is surprising how deep these storylines go in a very small window of time. I look forward to hearing Criminal every week.
Love love love Criminal, and Phoebe Judge is about as good as they get. Superb production all around. Grab your popcorn, some hot chocolate or wine, snuggle in with the kitties and binge this!
Phoebe Judge has such a likable manner and her voice is like butter. Amazing and varied crime topics from all angles—police, criminals, trials, prison, victims. Present day and historical, both! I always learn something. First rate production.
This podcast is one that I’ve really enjoyed spending time with. Ms. Judge is succinct and insightful, and shares the stories in an engaging and delightful way; it feels like you’re sharing time with a master story-teller, but she seems as fascinated as the listener.
Incredible stories told by those who lived them first-hand, a fantastic host, and an all-but-perfect audio score.
Phoebe’s voice causes zero cringe and she doesn’t moralize the listener, which indicates even-handed empathy. The content gives me thoughtful moments of learning and inspiration not often found in criminal genre podcasts. An easy binge.
I love listening to this podcast when I drive. There are a lot of interesting stories I’ve never heard before that keep me coming back for more and I like Phoebe’s interviewing and storytelling style.
I love true crime. I love the salacious and tragic and gory and horrifying. Criminal is NOT those things. Some of the stories make me question whether a crime has even taken place. But I’m not even mad! Why? Because Phoebe Judge has the voice of a midwestern angel (though I often wonder at her accent. She is the real-life Moira Rose of unplaceable accents and I love it.) Just like her other podcast, This is Love, Criminal is about fascinating human story. Sometimes the crimes are outrageous and horrifying. Sometimes they’re hilarious. Confusing. Sad. I could listen endlessly. Sadly, She did just admit she didn’t like cats :/
Seriously great listens
Love that the topics they choose are so riveting.
Criminal is one of my favorites - I could listen to these stories over and over. So interesting and pheovie’s voice is so calming!
Absolutely the most riveting, fascinating most interesting and addictive podcast I listen to. And Phoebe’s voice? Come on! She’s unreal!
Really great, unusual topics!
I am binging Criminal from the 1st episode. It just keeps getting better & better! 100% recommend
As a new mom, my whole life has changed and there’s very little “me time”. When it’s finally bedtime for the baby, I look forward to a long hot shower and listening to Criminal. Thank you for my 20 minutes of peace ♥️
The content is original and fresh. Phoebe’s interview style is open, sweet, engaging and fair. Her voice is soothing and angelic. I don’t often write reviews, but I’m compelled to put the word out on this one. Phoebe teaches me something new every time an episode airs. THANK YOU, CRIMINAL!
From Rwanda. Phoebe deserved a Grammy🥇 Thank you Phoebe for everything
Every time I see a new episode available, I get excited. Phoebe is amazing and absolutely has brought us interesting stories no one else does! Love you!
Criminal is one of the few podcasts that I listen to immediately when a new episode comes out. I am always able to get lost in each episode and enjoy the way the stories are conveyed. I appreciate the sound quality, Phoebe’s calm demeanor, and the consistent format across episodes.
This podcast is amazing!!!!! If you haven’t already listened, DO SO NOW!!!!!!!!!
I wish I could have Phoebe Judge talk me to sleep. Not only is her voice so soothing, but she asks the best questions!! I love how this podcast covers crimes way beyond just murders. I learn so much from this podcast and ALWAYS have a story to bring up at dinners and parties. You also hear perspective on this podcast. My best friends and I never miss an episode and love discussing our thoughts after. My only negative is I wish there were two episodes a week!
I’m glad to have found this pod cast, it’s stories are very engaging. I hope we get more episodes soon. Phoebes voice is so amazing for these type of true crime stories. PLEASE BRING MORE EPISODES
These are nice, but often too light for my tastes. Phoebe does sound pretentious but it might just be how her voice is, I don’t know. THE ADS are beyond tiresome. Initially they were just at the beginning, although far too many (enough with Madison Reed already), now they break up the story. Let’s not be greedy, Phoeb’.
I love the podcast and am always excited when there is a new episode.
Love the episodes and the content. Very easy to listen to and I wish they would release them more frequently.
Very well done, well produced show that somehow can’t seem to go five minutes without a crime being about how a woman/gay/trans/black person is being oppressed. It’s kind of absurd actually. I don’t listen to a criminal show to have your pet political theories constantly thrown in my face. Just...tell a story please. You’re good at it, but you’re constantly alienating me with the whole oppression narrative thing. If it were an occasional aside or occasional story in that vein, no problem. But it’s now like 90% of the episodes.
I love this podcast! It tells such unique stories. Each episode is interesting. I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts. This one is a bit different and I love it! I wish there were more episodes for me to binge.
I really enjoy the originality of this crime show! Always look forward to it
This podcast is the perfect mix of everything criminal. Some episodes are heavier than others but all are perfectly informative. I seriously cannot get enough.
Phoebe Judge is iconic. Thoroughly enjoy listening: great narratives, interviews, and reporting. As a listener, I really appreciate the width of topics covered- a fresh spin on differing types of “criminal” behaviors/acts/laws. Thanks for a phenomenal and well executed Podcast! Also appreciative of allowing diverse members from diverse populations the opportunity to tell their stories as they’ve lived them. Bravo!
Every episode is different but consistently interesting. Top notch narration of every episode. The show appeals to a wide audience. One of the best podcast overall that has ever been made.
Phoebe, loved “A Bucket, a Mop — the story, and especially Sandra, a wonderful person with the gift of genuine gentle giving in a very difficult slice of life. At the beginning of the story you talked about her husband and marriage, but never mentioned either again. Can you fill us in on that part? Thanks for this episode.
Started out one of my all time favorites. It was like Phoebe was whispering interesting crime secrets directly too me. What it’s turned into however is not so interesting stories on intersectional topics. Hard pass
I really enjoyed listening to this podcast. Very interesting. You don’t know what goes on afterwards. And as always listening to you Phoebe, is such a pleasure. You do a fantastic job. Kudos!!!
Criminal coma can’t make podcasts fast enough for me to listen to so I have to dig through the oldest ones to find ones that I haven’t heard which are very few and far between. I love the show I love love love it please make more as fast as you can. Sincerely, Rainee Dé 🌴☔
Perhaps it would surprise you if I said I’ve listened to each episode of Criminal five or so times. It shouldn’t, though: I expect PRX to have multiple awards for the storytelling masterpiece. Crisp sound, unwinding plots, probing interviews - Criminal is the cold standard in Podcasts others have been unable to crack and produce themselves. I can re-listened to my favorites every few weeks, without boredom, including Racehorse Hanes, Lavender Scare, The Procedure, In Plain Sight, Perfect Specimen, and Open Case. A new episode aired today, are you as excited as me?
I discovered Criminal about 2 weeks ago and just finished the last episode. I skipped a few. That brings me to my first compliment. The content warnings are so helpful! THANK YOU!!! I love that there are so many interesting stories about how people have been tied to crime in their lives. It’s not all serial killers and murder trials. The pacing & storytelling are wonderful. My only complaint is that I wish the episodes were about 10 minutes longer, both for the sake of the story and because I don’t want it to end.
I love this podcast. I love Phoebes voice. It’s so soothing. I love all the work I’ve heard of hers. Plus all the stories are so interesting and captivating, the moment a new episode comes out I immediately have to hear it. Definitely recommend this show 100% ❤️
I love Criminal. It’s pretty much my favorite podcast. I love Phoebe Judge’s voice. And the stories are always so engaging. Sometimes they make me cry, sometimes laugh, sometimes just stunned. Some of my favorite episodes are back from 2016 (I think) the two two parters- I think episodes 51,52 and then 53 and 54. Trust me you won’t regret listening!
Seriously she’s so soothing to listen to. And not all of these stories are horrifying. I love the mix of true crime and interesting stories (the streaker, the Bunny Ranch, the woman who made edibles, Oakland Buddha...). Recently went to her live show and she was just as lovely in person. Absolutely LOVE this podcast and her new one This Is Love. Thank you Phoebe!
Love this podcast. Started out listening to another crime podcast and it was ok but was a little too graphic for me. This one is so interesting and fun to listen to. I have laughed and cried and been amazed at people and what they think they can get away with. Love Phoebe and how she hosts the show. Keep giving us more shows!!
Criminal is the best.
Apparently some people don’t like Phoebes voice but I actually love it! I say give this podcast a try! It has the most interesting stories and is incredibly well made.
Wonderful interviews, such interesting topics. Makes you laugh, cry, research... well done! Thank you for all the hard work!
What’s up with the voice? Everything sounds like a whisper. Annoying.
Some of the stories are fascinating. My complaint is the way Phoebe reads the script in her NPR voice. She talks like...this with many...pauses and EMPHASIS...on the astword of ....each PHRASE.
My all time favorite podcast! Great content. Engaging host, she makes the show. The production is super professional.
Among all the true crime podcasts out there these days, Criminal continues to be one of the most reliably fascinating, nuanced and fun shows. It’s not unusual for me to see the blurb for an episode and wonder if it’ll be a bit boring, only to get hooked right away and want to talk about it with everyone.
The episode on Toby Dorr made me cry the end to her such a kind letter from the former prison ward. Such a well - assembled podcast. Congratulations. Refreshing to hear such great speaking in a world that is losing the art of story telling.
Everything great about public radio combined with first-rate journalism and true crime.
I enjoy listening to Phoebe Judge so much. Her soothing voice gently brings you into both unique and other times tragic tales.
The only podcast hosted by a robot?
The stories here are unique and interesting and include such great detail. Honestly, I would listen to Phoebe speak about pretty much anything. She has the loveliest voice in podcasting!
This is so good that it’s a crime not to appreciate it. Great research, narration. I always check here first to see if there is a new episode.
Love love love love love It’s smart and the stories are weird and wonderful and I cannot get enough of Phoebe Judge’s voice.
This is one of the best if not the best true crime podcast out there. Phoebe Judge has the most soothing voice ever. If you ever get the chance to catch this podcast live, do it! Last night in Portland was amazing. Thank you Phoebe Judge
Incredible storytelling and Phobe Judge is an amazing interviewer and host. Love the illustrations for each episode.
I am 11 years old and these podcasts have opened up my eyes to the real world. I love your episode about the mafia boy it was amazing I wish I could go to a real life show.
This podcast is one of my favorites! I got the chance to see the live show last year as well which was amazing. Keep doing it! 🙌🏼
Great show. Short stories that keep you wanting more. I’ve been binging. ❤️
i listen to these about 20 minute stories and get so engaged into each story as it is being told! the narrator has a soothing voice, and calming presence when she interviews the story's protagonist! i can't wait to go to the Seattle Show Live!
Each episode is so different, I’m constantly surprised by the content (in a good way). Phoebe’s storytelling is far from boring, even when the content is serious and foreboding. Criminal has quickly become one of my favorite go-to podcasts.
The podcast is great, but I can’t tolerate the affected speech of the host. I’ve tried so hard. Deleted and redownloaded multiple times but I just can’t do it!
A different perspective from most crime shows. I dig it!
I like both the storytelling and the storyteller/journalists. I do so enjoy the cold openings leading up to when Phoebe drops her “I’m Phoebe Judge, this is Criminal” . By then, I’m already hooked. Thanks for the great stories!
I am a long time listener and when I step away for a bit (selfish, bingeable reasons), I find myself falling in love with a voice behind all things Criminal. It’s important work you are delivering. Carry on!
This is criminal.
Enjoy the mysteries and most of the stories. However, I just don't want to listen to crimes of sexual violence or horrid butchery. Thank you for your great storytelling voice!
Enjoying he premise but the overly softened, padded speech is almost unbearable. Just speak like a Sensible human please.
i only want more podcasts with like blood and sexual assaults. ik 😅 it's kinda weird. i'm a rat. i love you!!
I loved this podcast at first but now since I’ve listened to almost all of them, I’ve noticed a lot of these stories are often demeaning towards police officers and white people.
Aside from great presentation the story selection is genius.
Her delivery is the best. She’s a great storytelller. Try listening to more podcasts and you’ll appreciate the fact that she doesn’t sour like she reading. I won’t name names.
I love this podcast it transcends the genre. Not to say I don’t love the genre I do, Criminal at times embraces, elevates, and circumvents the genre to create something truly unique.
Criminal has a been a delight to listen to over these past few years. It’s the podcast I tell everyone to listen to. The show is very well done and does a great job of putting together riveting unique stories. The 2 episodes on psychopaths still have me SHOOK to this day. Thanks criminal for being awesome!
I want to listen but her delivery is beyond off-putting.
The podcasts are good and the episodes are interesting
The narrator seems to think the show is a secret or something - can u f’ing speak up!?
I’d love to listen but I just can’t take her laborious delivery.
Great stories with an awesome delivery!
Always love your episodes!☺️
I was hesitant to try this show-thought it looked derivative of Serial-couldn’t have been more wrong. Entertaining, informative and singular.
After the presidential election I noticed A LOT of the episodes have a very liberal undertone. It used to be easy listening, no agenda and it was perfect that way.
Criminal is beyond the best. Their desire to tell the real story permeates every episode. I love to listen and am hooked. Thanks Phoebe Judge, Suzannah and the rest of the team for your attention to detail and willingness to break the mold of sensationalizing everything. The real stories are sensational as they are! You guys are at the top of my list.
Best true-crime podcast.
I listen to a lot of Podcasts and Criminal just has that something special that is beyond entertainment. It’s a masterful combination of informative and fun.
I’ve been listening to Criminal for over a year now. I am fascinated by these stories, and I’ve listened to a few of them several times. The episodes are well put together. Criminal gives its listeners insight into human conditions.
To Phoebe and everyone who works on this show thank you! I enjoy true crime a lot but it can be very overwhelming hearing about such awful things all the time. This podcast offers a perspective I never would’ve expected! I learn so much every episode and listen as much as I can. It takes a look at crime in a way that isn’t about sensationalizing, but really telling people’s stories. It’s amazing.
I am always intrigued on how they work with the word Criminal. This podcast has great twists and turns! You think it will go one way and then it goes another! Highly recommend it if you are traveling on the road! Phoebe is sooo good at keeping you interested and doesn’t derail from the subject. Definitely a highlight on my drive to work!
This podcast is one of the best. Interesting and unbelievable at times to think people do what they do. Great audio and variety of subjects. My favorite , listens to over 100 episodes and haven’t wanted to switch to another yet. 👍
The content of this podcast is fantastic. I’ve listened to every single episode but it pains me to say the most CRIMINAL thing about this show is that someone lets it be released with the terrible, nausea inducing, high fidelity mouth smacking noises of every person being interviewed. They’re are multiple episodes I couldn’t make it through because of how audible the spit and mouth noises are. It’s almost as if they intentionally mix the range to make everyone’s voice as displeasing as possible. They spray the interview subjects mouth and lips with water and then place a microphone centimeters from their face before asking questions. A perfect example of how the content of a podcast can be ruined by the way it is delivered.
I've listened to this one from the beginning and I love it and I love to listen to Phoebe. It's one of the 2 or 3 podcasts I listen to on 1x, because I want to hear it the way she recorded it-- it's that good. Try it, you'll love it. FOUR stars only, because no matter what I try I can't subscribe-- I have to update the episode list by going to iTunes and manually downloading anything that looks new. That's a big pain since I don't always remember the titles. Radiotopia, please fix!!!
This podcast has a large variety of true crime stories and every episode has been interesting.
I just finished listening to the episode "Dog Lady of Lansing Prison. It was great. I am a huge animal person myself, and I could see how the whole prison thing got started. I especially liked the fact that she did not try to blame everyone else for her choices. It is a terrible shame that she lost the connection to her sisters and sons. GOD bless her mother for not turning her back on Dog Lady. I sincerely hope that one day her sisters and sons will forgive her. She has paid her debt to society, so I would think her family members could forgive her. Best episode yet, and I am crazy about your voice, Phoebe. It is pleasing to hear and I like that you say things to your guests that others might not say, but you do it so naturally. Keep up this great podcast because I will be listening! Jan Toles
I have recently found this podcast and have been binge-listening to all the episodes. I have loved them all. Intriguing, varied, and intelligent, but not pointlessly gruesome .
This podcast is what got me started on true crime podcasts. I LOVE this. Each episode is different, brief and simple. It isn’t hard to follow and the topics have such variety that it would interest anyone at some point. 5/5 for sure.
Phoebe and team! Thank you for your hard work! See you in St Paul on 9/22!
I love your show! You bring the facts along with your own unique touch. For me at least I get left learning something. (Know sounds weird but I love your voice! It really relaxes me on my when home and to work everyday! I first start listing to this is love which I love but I do like this more. Keep up the great work!!!
Great stories, well produced. Phoebe Judge’s voice was made for radio.
Moving stories. Criminal staff are able to find the human perspective in all their subjects - some of them are funny, some of them are horrifying, some make me cry. I have eaten up every single episode of five years of their recording and can’t wait to hear what comes next.
I love this show! Wonderful stories and a great host.
We named our dog Phoebe. That’s how much we love Criminal in this house. Engaging, thoughtful, often gently profound... this podcast explores every avenue of criminal activity in a way that strikes at the heart of my interest in true crime. My favorite podcast. Thank you Phoebe! And everyone else associated with the creation of this amazing project.
Good stories. I wish I could get past the host’s halting, breathy, annoying voice and enjoy this podcast, but I can’t.
I really enjoy these. You just never know where each episode is going. I wait impatiently for each new show.
Phoebe Judge is soooo good. Criminal is legitimately my favorite podcast and after finding it I’ve gone back to listen to every episode since it’s inception. Each story is so interesting and different from what we would typically think of as crime. Keep up the great work Phoebe!!
Not the type to leave reviews. I don’t even read the comment sections. But this is beautiful storytelling done so well. Ordinary people telling the wildest, realest stories, so incredible that Hollywood would never get away with writing so preposterously human
Always looking for a good new podcast. This is it.
ap!!! That lady did not care for her husband at all., And she was oblivious to the world. Why would he owe her an apology? And I think her sons probably had issues with her long before she broke a guy out of prison. Still a top favorite podcast Phoebe is the truth!!!
My absolute favorite podcast. It is put together really well and keeps me engaged the entire time. Can’t wait to see the live show next month!
I don’t care what I’m doing, as soon as I see that notification that a new episode has been posted I jump up to listen! This is my absolute favorite podcast and I’m not sure that any could ever top this one!
Please please make more episodes
I love this podcast. The title is somewhat misleading as it might lure those who are interested in true crime, but it’s more than that. While every episode might be considered somewhat related to crime, it’s so much more varied, deep, far-reaching and interesting than that. I think it could make some think it should be something that it isn’t and therefore encourage distaste when they first listen. I urge everyone to give this podcast a try. The stories are beautiful, amazing, outstanding, unbelievable, heartwarming, crazy, proving that there’s nothing more interesting than human life and nature . This podcast doesn’t fit it any mold, yet it has something for everyone. Phoebe Judge is an amazing and insightful interviewer.
I have listened to every episode and cannot wait for more. I love the fact that people try to duplicate Phoebe’s voice and they actually have spoken about this in their podcast. It’s just more intriguing that there is controversy about her voice. Voice aside, the stories are captivating due to readership, writing, and, yes, that unusual voice. Keep this going for many, many years please. 💜
The variety and depth of this podcast is GREAT. I find many of the stories to be surprisingly moving and poignant and as a bonus, the host Phoebe has an amazing and relaxing voice. My favorite true crime podcast!!!
Amazing podcast. Different kinds of story telling and she actually interviews the people that are involved or know something regarding the story she’s telling. I literally binged it in one week. Highly recommend.
Great stories, though, the host’s, delivery, is, filled, with, too many, irritating, pauses.
Phoebe, Please listen to episode 119. This is an old episode. Episodes like this made people like to listen to your voice. Listen to how different you sound today. Your hard articulation, deliberate voice change tactics, punching every “s” sound and other voice games have made me stop listening. Old episodes are proof you don’t speak like this. Please go back to your natural lovely voice.
Wow! I LOVE this podcast. I just discovered it last week so I get the privilege getting to binge listen every chance I get!
Been listening for a few years now... first and best podcast on crime- plus episodes short and no banter or gossipy side
Criminal is one of my favorite podcasts. Well researched stories that are fun to listen to. I always look forward to the latest release. Phoebe is great!
I love this podcast. It’s not just true crime its stories that are really well referenced
The host has a feigned voice that drives me insane.
I love this podcast! Phoebe does a wonderful job of telling stories
She has the best voice! Amazing podcast
Great range of stories that are intriguing, but not scary to the point that you’re afraid to sleep alone at night.
I listen on 1.5x speed as the host talks at a glacial pace. I loath when she interviews people in her feigned journalist inquisitive voice. Also dislike liberal undertones & topics they promote but good content otherwise.
Love this show!
I listen to a lot of podcast as I travel over 400 miles a week for work. Criminal is one of my top 3 favs. Creative, interesting and thoughtfully arranged. Give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed
Host’s voice quickly gets pretentious and annoying
Your voice is so soothing, it’s an absolute comfort to listen to you- and especially with the riveting true crime stories you cover. Thank you so much for this podcast.
This is by far the best podcast out there. The stories are either unusual or ones I haven’t heard yet and hold my interest. It is well written Phoebes voice is part of the story; her inflection, tone and articulations resonate with the subject matter. This podcast is the podcast that started my podcast journey and I love it.
Criminal is presented with the utmost respect and integrity in dealing with crimes that at all times, affected the lives of real people. There’s something really beautiful about how Phoebe Judge talks to people who have seen and experienced hard things or unique things. I’m always excited to see a new episode show up!
This is a podcast you will really enjoy listening to. It keeps you on your toes and if you love true crime, this is where to go.
I always enjoy each episode of Criminal. Besides Aaron Mahnke’s Lore, it’s the first podcast I’ll listen to when a new episode pops up in my feed. Phoebe’s voice delivers the stories so eloquently. My favorite episodes so far were the ones about the plane hijackers - what crazy stories!
A must listen for anyone with an interest in true crime.
This podcast will make you start every statement with “I’m Phoebe Judge” in a smoky alto. Even though you definitely aren’t Phoebe Judge and your coworkers keep asking you why you want to be called that now.
I think her voice is the best and I love how much she cares!
Everything about this podcast is awesome. Love the info, the narration and Phoebe's voice. My first and favorite podcast. If you dont want to be come addicted stay away, this is the gateway podcast:-)
I love Criminal! These episodes are usually pretty short, so I can enjoy one on my drive home, but they are pretty much always fascinating. While listening to Criminal, I often find myself wondering how I have never heard about the subject being covered before. Two of my favorite episodes are 119 and 120. I learned so much in 120... awful things all Americans should know about US history!
This is a really good podcast, and listenning to it has made Phoebe Judge one of my favorite podcast hosts. The show is an eclectic assortment of stories about crime from the tragic to the humorous. It's entertaining, frequently thought provoking, and offers something even to those who aren't hardcore true-crimes fans (as I am not). Phoebe does a great job of finding interesting stories and people to talk to, and I appreciate her interviewing style. This show is at the very top of my feed right now, where I'll see its new episodes before anything else.
This podcast was not quite what I expected. It’s stories about criminals but almost always is super sympathetic to them. There should be a trigger warning as I was a victim of a violent crime and listening to someone glorifying murderers is really painful
If this podcast is truly about criminals, then 50% of the episodes would be about the group of people who commit the crimes. Look up FBI crime statistics about which group of people makes up 13% of the population yet commits 50% of violent crimes. This podcast just tries to beat it into people’s minds how terrible and racist everyone is.
Great voice and narration, Phoebe!
Almost always discusses something I’ve never thought/heard about before, which isn’t something that I can say about any other podcast. Even when this show does discuss something I’ve thought/heard about before, it’s still always interesting.
I’ve listened to every Criminal episode and it is one of my favorite podcasts. However, Episode 120 was incredibly boring. I hope this podcast is not going downhill due to lack of material. Episode 120 is really bad. I hope this is just a fluke!!!
I love this show, it always holds my attention. But the voice! I wish Phoebe didn’t try so hard to speak a ‘radio’ voice. Every now and then when she is interviewing a little bit of ‘normal’ Phoebe voice comes through and I’m like ‘Yes!’ But seriously, no one sounds like that unless they are trying really hard to create an artificial voice. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t listen anymore. Please, just use your normal voice, it sounds so much better!
I expect an episode every week! I need more from our relationship Phoebe. :)
Episodes are always great, interesting, and have a twist! I highly recommend!
As my title states, this show never disappoints. Whenever I see it come into my feed I know I’m in for a treat that day. The topics always vary but they are incredibly well thought out and always extremely well done. I recommend this podcast to everyone I know.
So I usually listen to Criminal on Spotify but after hearing the 100th episode bonus, I had to come over and leave a review. That 100th episode clip was the cutest thing I’ve heard in a good long while. Hearing fans’ impersonations of Phoebe made me realize how familiar her voice has become after having listened to hours of it. Her cadence truly is one of a kind. As for the show, it’s fantastic. The episodes are short (in my opinion, mostly) and vary widely in topic, all centered around the theme of criminality. Lots of interesting topics to keep me engaged and coming back. Thank you, Phoebe and team!
Episode 119. This show is amazing. I wish every episode were longer.
Been listening for a while, my first introduction to it was from my mom who spent over an hour describing the first episode that’s only 21 minutes long. Suffice to say each episode does a great job of condensing long complex stories into manageable and engaging shows.
Love the content. Don’t miss this !
The real crime episodes are well-produced and interesting but I loved the episode “Stowaway.” Just charming and wonderful new take in a very popular, most often gory category. I hope they find other Criminals like this to feature to break up the tragedy.
I’m binging all these episodes in a week
The stories that these people find are procured so well. They are interesting, always take a unique twist & are very real. Thank you Phoebe & everyone else for everything you do. This is my favorite podcast & I’ve been a fan of crime podcasts for awhile. This is the first podcast I absolutely “had” to listen to every single episode. Love it love it love it.
I initially started to listen to this podcast while playing video games, generally boring and quiet ones, this podcast was interesting and was honestly more riveting than some of the games that I was playing I now listen to this podcast when cooking, cleaning, when on the bus. It’s an amazing podcast, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
I started listening to this podcast a couple of months ago. I became hopelessly addicted. I’m not sure how I stumbled across it, as it received no worthy fan fare from iTunes. I literally “binged” all the episodes in a shot while, which isn’t like me. While listening, I questioned whether Ms. Judge was a real person: her voice is so smooth, and alluring. When she interviews victims, guests, and well, criminals, her questions are so relevant. She relaxes them with her conversationalist delivery. You can tell everyone she interviews trusts her and feels compelled to be open and engaging. She’s also extremely witty and brilliant, capitalizing on topics that seem so meritless; yet, when explored, become insightful, and powerful. This podcast also goes the extra mile by thoroughly researching each topic. My only feedback is I wish there were at least 3 episodes a week. Usually I skip though the commercials on podcasts (everyone does). But phoebe has broken new ground by sometimes linking a story to her sponsoring advertiser. . . cleaver. This podcast definitely rivals Radiolab. . . and I don’t say that lightly.
I never miss an episode of Criminal, but “The Numbers” is even better than your usual excellent fare. I saved it and will listen again. Thanks!
obviously the content is amazing; i feel like i don’t even need to say that. but phoebe judge, you are quite literally my favorite podcast host, if not person, in the entire world. thank you for your smart questions, your hilarious, albeit sometimes random questions, and, most of all, your voice. keep it up.
I LOVE this podcast! I am always excited when a new episode is released and I love that there is a variety of stories told. Keep up the great work!
I was disappointed that you didn’t hire a translator and talk to the people who actually take care for the Buddha. You didn’t even talk to his wife Lou even though he said himself that they made the decision together. Then you talk to some white dude who has nothing to do personally with this project and had nothing that interesting to say. I love this show and I realize this is not what you usually report on but I think that you could have done better. I will keep listening. But stories reported like this make me kinda loose trust in you and I get really angry (sorry if I am rude right now) and it makes me want to stop listening. I love this show! Please know that!
This podcast is the best, Phoebe, ( sorry if I spelled it wrong ), your voice is so nice, please keep up the good work 😃😃😃😃
Intoxicating because Phoebe Judge’s narration is just that and the stories are too notch. Sometimes sad, funny, even some will make you angry. Always telling true stories better than anyone in this genre.
I love true crime podcasts, but Criminal is in its own category. It’s smart, so entertaining, and thought provoking. I never miss an episode! I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good narrative- even if true crime is not your cup of tea.
My favorite podcast
Why is it so hard for podcasters to have and use a normal voice. Work with a linguist!
This is the best true crime podcast PERIODT. Sis Phoebe has the most relaxing voice, the best narration skills, and all around warmness that makes me want to be her adopted daughter (or sister? Who knows). This show doesn’t focus only on murder, and can actually have some touching episodes. This and Serial are the best crime podcasts, the other girls just aren’t doing it.
Asks some pointless questions during her interviews/ attempted comedy but overall not a bad listen, covers some interesting topics!
I just binged all the episodes in less than 1 month. Cannot get enough.
While not the first ever podcast, Criminal was the one that started it all in my love affair with podcasts. Even several years later, with a long list of other regulars, Criminal remains my fave and the first one I recommend to friends. Fantastic stories, expertly woven, and PJ’s melodic voice—mesmerizing! Keep ‘em coming!
This is one of my favorite podcasts! It is very interesting and thought provoking. Definitely give it a listen
I've been listening to podcasts daily for several years and in all that time I've rated many as very very good, some mediocre and a few downright laughable, not in a good way however. I'm going to keep it short and say this: Criminal is the very best in so many ways. I love it, keep up the good work! Thank you for the enjoyment, entertainment and information. The best podcasts are the ones in which the host gets out of the way and lets the story speak. I do, however, love Phoebe Judge, so she can talk all she wants! Thank you
Absolute thrill the moment I find that there’s a new Criminal episode. I don’t even bother to read the description before I hit play. Every single episode captivates me so completely the details of the story are insignificant as a way to decide if I want to listen because OF COURSE I want to listen. Every episode is an episode I instantly fall in love with. Without a doubt Criminal is one of my top 3 favorite podcasts. Thank you!
With a lot of podcasts I like, I often don't bother to download certain episodes based on the topic or guest, but I listen to just about every episode of Criminal. With any random episode, odds are pretty good that I'll find the guest or story very entertainingly peculiar. I think the host generally does a good job too, but I think she presses her guests in arrogant/pretentious ways at times, which has been a bit grating for me.
The content, the suspense. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Always entertaining and informative. Thank you!
There is something about a podcast that help you learn, when you thought you knew it all. Gives you answers to questions you didn’t even know you had. Not only makes you cry but makes you feel compassion. And gives you the brightest smile you could ever ask for. This is Criminal.
Beyond just true crime, stories are unique and incredibly interesting. Phoebe Judge is a legend.
I really enjoy that the podcast is short (under 45 minutes usually). I also am a fan of Phoebe’s voice, it’s quite calming. The only thing I’m not a big fan of is certain episodes seem to have no point at the end, for example, the JRR (episode 7 I believe) seemed like it was going to have an interesting finish but basically nothing too interesting happened. Setting aside a few episodes that seem to be anticlimactic I really enjoy this true crime podcast and would recommend.
I love this podcast mainly because phoebe judge has a nice and soothing voice.
...unless it’s positive! Haha. This podcast is wonderful. I’ve listened to certain episodes several times and have connected to so many episodes that I’ve ended up doing separate research on my own to learn more. Phoebe’s voice is awesome and I love listening to Criminal while I drive.
Incredibly insightful podcast
Reading other reviews has compelled me to write my own even though I don’t typically do that. 1) I love her voice and have never found it to be fake. It’s fine if others don’t like it but I don’t understand how they think they know the authenticity of a stranger’s voice. 2) One episode with a topic you don’t empathize with or understand shouldn’t cause you to write a negative review for the whole show if you’ve enjoyed other episodes. 3) Keep it up, love the episodes, love that they’re short, love envelope pushing topics. Don’t listen to the haters.
I’ve really been enjoying this podcast, until episode 14. I don’t know who decided that leaving the sound of the man snorting his own mucous was a great idea, but now I have hives and I think I pulled a muscle in my neck. I’m only half joking. It’s well researched, the background music is unobtrusive, but I had to skip the entire above-mentioned episode for fear that I’d have the sound of chest deep, loogy-hawking snorting in my ears again. I don’t even care that I’ll never find out what happened to the fifth suspect.
I adore everything about this podcast (yes, including the sex work episodes), but I can’t get over Phoebe’s cheesy therapist narrator voice, it just feels so fake 🙃 and some of her pauses also feel overdramatizes. ANYWAY content is 5/5 but the presentation kills my hopes of binging ☹️
My favorite crime podcast! You never know what you’re going to learn or discover when you listen. I love that it covers many types of crime. Some podcasts seem to focus only on violence. I’ve listened to the episodes about The Numbers and the Buddha statue in Oakland SO many times!
Every episode is thought provoking and moving. I love Phoebe and team!
Thanks for one of the best podcast online. I get anxious waiting for a new episode only as Phoebe can softly deliver. I don’t have much time left I guess from end stage heart and pulmonary disease. I am trying to stay busy and listening to Criminal is one way that helps. Maybe after I get double-lung transplant can give me enough time to be able to see my grandchildren grow like weeds.
Magaoingo, I get it! I’m not “slamming” Derk666 for having an opinion but more so for stating that her voice is fake as if he know it to be a fact etc which is a false perception and actually not a fact. I get that everyone does not like her voice but to say it is fake etc. is uncalled for. More importantly, that is her real voice. If the listener actually heard her speak outside of the podcast, they would have known that is her natural voice. Nonetheless, thanks for your feedback as well. ///Original Post/// Derk666, Seeing that is was important to you share your opinion... here is some unsolicited feedback on your comment. If you don’t like her voice, then just don’t listen. I actually like her voice and tone. She is clear and consistent from what I have heard. She articulates the narrative and makes it enjoyable. Let me leave you with this, just because you have an opinion, does not mean you have to share it.
I love Phoebe’s voice! I find it soothing, like the female version of Roman Mars. Radiotopia is the Mecca of relaxing voices. As for the content, it’s informative and entertaining. The episodes are short but they cut to the facts and the meat of the stories.
I love every episode and get excited every time I see a new episode pop up. “This is Love” is a great one too.. if you enjoy her voice. I know some people don’t like it.. but I find it super relaxing. Phoebe, will you come over and read me bedtime stories? 😆
This podcast is a great combo of narration, and interviews. Phoebe’s voice is soothing and yet biting at times. Love this podcast.
I absolutely love every episode!
Phoebe’s voice gets more annoying every episode. Quit forcing your falsetto. Use your normal voice!!
Please stop taking a breath between every word. It’s maddening.
I am a podcast junkie, and if I were stuck on a desert island with one podcast, I would pick, Criminal :-)
This narrator has the moat annoying voice. Why is she whisper talking?! I had to stop listening.
love the different approach to true crime by looking at crime adjacent stories and not just gruesome murders (tho those eps are also fun!) all the commenters being rude to phoebe need to calm down!!! my ONLY complaint would be that there are a lot of ads.... like a full two minutes in a 17 minute episode! other than that i love binge listening at work! thank you for making it!!!
Hey Nigel, you can’t slam someone for expressing their opinion, that is what these reviews are for, positive and negative reviews. You look silly telling someone to keep their opinion to themselves , while expressing your opinion.
I really like everything else but wish the podcasts could be alt least an hour long.
If I have to say one way or the other, I would recommend this podcast wholeheartedly. Phoebe’s voice, though not everyone’s cup of tea, offers a rather soothing but biting tone that you cannot find elsewhere and really adds a bit of gravitas to light-hearted topics or some relief from serious topics. The topics themselves have been interesting. It really captures people in the line of crime, from those who are involved, those who are affected by, and those who just happen to be at that time. It doesn’t seem to discriminate who their guests are, no matter the topic of the week is. Having said that, in the recent episodes, I’ve been noticing that the topics tend to be a bit more taboo or controversial. This is not a new trend from this series (some of their old episodes deals with euthanasia, for four or five episode back-to-back after all), but it definitely shows that the show runners want to draw in more audience or hype by covering topics such as these. I think it really makes some listeners, who just want some interesting topic without going too much into politics/ethics, to be driven away from the podcast as some episodes end rather in a supportive tone, rather than their usual neutral tone. Again, overall, it’s a good podcast to listen to for those who want something interesting than constant comedy or news podcasts, but be aware of some topics that tiptoe the line of neutrality and somewhat agenda-driven reporting.
I could listen to her talk all day, tbh. I love the episode when she’s pondering out loud and speaking more. My brother thinks she has a terrible lisp but I don’t mind because I love Phoebe
Usually I enjoy this podcast, but what’s with all the recent episodes about legalizing sex work? Boo. Get back to the true crime.
This is hands-down my favorite podcast. First, I am in love with Phoebe’s voice and the way she talks. Second, each episode is utterly fascinating. This is the best way to make driving fly by, and also not get traumatized by recent events. Love everything about Criminal!
This would be so much more listenable if she just used her real voice. The fake sultry wannabe newscaster voice is cheesy and distracting from an otherwise enjoyable podcast.
I have just started listening to podcasts and stumbled across this one that seemed interesting. I’m glad I did! I love how you get to hear accounted details from people that were actually there in that moment in history or people that really know what they are talking about. With that being said it is also great that Phoebe gets all the details in there so you know everything from start to end of whatever the podcast is about. I would highly recommend to anyone that I know to listen to this podcast.
Yes, my title is very disparate, but that's how I feel about "Criminal." Some of the stories are disturbing -- violent or strange, but I learn, too -- check out "In Plain Sight" about two slaves' passage to freedom. But I LOVE Phoebe Judge; her voice is soothing and warm, like an old friend. This is my favorite podcast!
I have always loved this podcast- and after the Cecelia episode, I loved it even more. Keep up the good work! I will forever be a listener.
These stories are each unique and interesting In their own way. Criminal fulfills my love for true crime but also explores all sorts of new topics; things I maybe knew a little bit about but more than often completely new things I’d never heard about. I can not recommend this podcast highly enough!
Each episode is always so well-researched and takes the time to tell multiple perspectives. Phoebe is like the Terry Gross of crime.
This is a creative approach to crimes. Your voice with this podcast and This Is Love has been a wonderfully unexpected breath of fresh air.
Phoebe Judge I simply adore and admire you for the way you narrate or voice the stories. U are an awesome host. Looking forward to hearing more episodes.
I have listened from the first episode and am nearly up-to-date. I have had many amazed moments, some delighted moments, and many sad ones listening to “Criminal.” [IMO: This podcast is NOT as graphic or grisly as other true-crime podcasts. It’s mostly “PG-13,” and the host/producer, Phoebe Judge, is scrupulous about providing trigger warnings, etc.] Judge and Team discover offbeat crimes to reveal. They reveal some that are infuriating and others that restore your faith in the criminal justice system...a bit. Two recent favorites: “Silvon Simmons” and “Homewrecker”; these stories are very different from each other, and each touched me in a way that made me want to take action!
Love show & Phoebe, but not 2 episodes on sex work in a row...
This is my favorite podcast to listen too dawg
I wish they would do more podcasts regularly, I love this podcast 😫
Phoebe’s the best!!! Thanks for this podcast x
Criminal is easily one of the most enjoyable and well researched podcasts about true crime. The topics are always fascinating, and Phoebe is a great narrator. Simply one of the best!
I love that Criminal is not all about gory crimes–some are peculiar, even humorous at times. It's great for listening to at work, and I love the host's voice. Keep up the great content!
Podcast with a talented lady whispering about minorities and immigrants. That’s fine but just like Radiolab, don’t change the format after you’ve gotten a listener. HEY! Be happy. Speak up!😊
Just a slam dunk. The depth of the research and quality of the interviews are top drawer. I crime show that takes you to understand all perspectives, and let’s you make up your mind. Changes the way I see the world.
I listen to many podcasts, mostly true crime. I love that each episode is about a different subject and not all are about murder. The production quality is great. Very, very well done.
Thank you for doing this show. Amazing job
Phoebe Judge is my hero.
Podcasts don’t get better than this. Great depth, great variety of topics. I like that they don’t shy away from murder and violent crime, but have other topics too - podcasts with nothing but murder start to get too rough for me. Phoebe does a good job bringing personality and curiosity to stories without overshadowing them.
I love Criminal for the stories they choose, they way they are told, and the host Phoebe. Always interesting and always something different. I also appreciate the way “criminals” are treated with dignity, even if the crime is a gnarly one.
I absolutely love this podcast. It gives you unique crimes with unique views. I have heard podcasts without interviews from victims, people involved, or the criminals and upon finding this podcast I have not been able to go back to those shows. This podcast brings up important controversial issues which need to be talked about. For example “Cecilia” an episode about an undocumented sex worker. This episode opened my eyes to the importance of sex worker safety. I had no idea they were being treated so unfairly. I love learning about these topics and hearing about interesting and chilling topics. Not only are there murder cases but also lighter ones like the episode “420”. Phoebe the host is incredible and always asks intriguing questions that delve deep into topics or thoughts that end up being very interesting and give you a new perspective. This is my favorite podcast and I am so excited for the next episode.
This one of the most raw, interesting and insightful podcasts on the human condition. It truly captures the art of story telling and I look forward to each episode! Highly recommend.
cecilia story was heartbreaking, she isn’t only undocumented but human as well! reading the negative reviews is horrible, thank you for representing women in a diverse way. you might lose listeners that lack compassion but you’re expanding your listeners at the same time
Thank You Phoebe and Team I’ve been listening for years now. I’ve loved every story you’ve produced. I just listened to episode 115 and it was wonderful. I’m a cismale and I love stories like this because I hope the exposure will help. Thank you.
If this podcast ever ended it would be Criminal
I have loved almost all other episodes but this one missed the mark. If this person had such a hard time being a sex worker they should have found another line of work. And while I have nothing against trans people I’m just sick of hearing about it.
Many of the episodes are interesting and entertaining. Some of them clearly politically and socially biased. Others are not that interesting. Read the summary and choose.
And the podcast is terrific. It really explores the depth and breathe of the term/consent of criminal. Each week is a surprise. I often want the episodes to be longer!
I have come to love this podcast, wholeheartedly. I genuinely look forward to new episodes and have listened to every single one since day 1... but Cecilia, really? Is it just for me or did she really waste a whole episode promoting not only paid sex workers, but undocumented sex workers. I understand trying to encourage controversy and getting the podcast a little hype, but I can’t stand behind that episode. I feel you let the ball down on this one, for me at least. I don’t think the point, if there was one, was ever distinguished. At least not tastefully. The comparisons from Cecilia were absolutely absurd. Out of all the crazy stories out there, this one I completely disliked. I still love your show, hence 3 stars. Hopefully the next episode brings a better storyline...
This was my first true crime podcast and now I'm obsessed. Thank you for keeping me interested.
Phoebe Judge is the podcast host ever. If they ever make a tv show based on this podcast they need to cast Sarah Paulson to play her. Anyways, quite simply one of the best podcasts around.
With so many great podcasts, I just lost about 20min listening to how Jordan Peterson might not have killed his wife, instead an owl might have done it. He had a 5 month trial at countless taxpayer expense. Let it rest.
The inflections are crazy good. No, no one talks like this and either you love it or hate it. Stories are great. No profanity. Fantastic
High-quality, respectful interviews with interesting people. Latest episode as of this review, “Cecilia” is especially informative and moving.
Holy cow this is a great podcast! The different takes on all the different subjects is such a refreshing spin on this type of podcast! I’m absolutely obsessed. Phoebe Judge and her team are amazing! I am in awe!
My all time favorite crime show podcast I love how she tells stories I love the irony of her name and I love everything about this story!
No one talks like that.
Are you serious with this episode? I’m supposed to feel compassion for an illegal immigrant doing illegal sex work! How about doing things the right way? Apply for a visa, get your citizenship and get a job that you can be proud of!!
I’ve been listening for a while but the “Cecilia” episode??? Sex work is like football?? You’ve lost me entirely.
There hasn’t really been an episode I don’t like her stories are always interesting and I keep me hooked I wish there was more episodes! I love her voice too it’s so soothing
Criminal started out as a great short podcast that highlighted uncategorized stories from past and present. Every episode brought something new. Recently, the politics and opinions pushed through the stories are blatant which overshadow the formula that made me enjoy the premise in the first place. Euthanasia, gay marriage, and transgender “sex workers”/hookers are an agenda that I do not care for nor want to listen for leisure. I hear enough of the political realm on the news, don’t need it from here.
Very well researched and an eclectic range incredible stories! I also find her voice very soothing! lol
Always a great story!
Your topics, interview style, and voice are fantastic! You help me fall asleep when my mind racing.
Always well done. Always interesting.
I absolutely love your voice and the variation of topics. This is one of my absolute favorite podcasts. I binged all the episodes when I first found you and now I impatiently wait for each new episode. Keep up the great work. Mandie S. Hermiston, Oregon
Phoebe Judge has an unique voice that can not be replicated. The way she narrates each story makes the podcast better. She is humbling and so personal. You’ll love it!!!
I can’t understand the complaints about Phoebe’s voice - even though she can be talking about truly awful topics, her voice is calming and relaxing and soothing in a lovely ASMR way.
This podcast is one of a kind! It’s engaging, very well researched, with extremely interesting topics. It is produced excellently and the host presents the stories wonderfully. They pick such varied and fascinating topics, it’s not just gory murder stories. I’m looking forward to seeing it live this fall. I highly recommend this excellent podcast!
Love the uniqueness and vast diversity of the stories, Phoebe’s voice is a perfect host voice, production quality is top notch
Short, simple, interesting stories. I really enjoy your podcast!
Interesting content but I find the narrator’s voice to be distracting. Her whispering narration style and 1930s newsreel inflection is bizarre and pulls me out of the stories.
Interviews are Well organized, sensitive and Phoebe asks all the right questions. Fascinating stories, interesting people intriguing. Love it thanks guys 🕶
As an avid podcast listener, I really appreciate the consistency of Criminal. As someone who loves losing themselves in stories, I appreciate the incredible variety of crime stories that Phoebe and the gang research and report. From murders to identity theft to “soft” crime, I love hearing the real stories that are told on Criminal.
I am an avid true crime podcast enthusiast. I always have a top ten most listened to, and Criminal has been there from the the start of my poddiction, lol. Phoebe does a magnificent job explaining each case, and her soothing voice helps to keep the sometimes horrible, a little less so. I don’t write a lot of reviews, but feel it’s time to start thanking my faves for the work they do and the unique style each show brings to the table. As more and more podcasts in this genre are popping up, I see a trend of the newer ones “borrowing” from the originals in what must be considered a flattering way, as long as it’s not plagiarism. Keep up the good work Phoebe you’re truly one of the originals. Thanks a whole lot, Rob
My favorite podcast. I love the scope of the topics the podcast covers, & Phoebe is a spectacular host. I hope it never ends.
The stories are done in a very smooth manner. I like the tone of voices during the story telling. Some of the crime podcasts are too wordy and give the feeling that the stories are for the hosts amusements. Thank you for this informative and well told stories. K.
This is probably the best podcast ever, her voice is wonderful, thank you, keep them coming.
The stories are incredibly interesting and the host has an amazing voice and delivery. Don’t let the podcast name throw you - these a small, humanizing stories that have a criminal aspect to them (and makes you wonder if something should actually be illegal!)
Always enjoy listening. Play them while carpooling our kids to school.
Interesting and fun to listen to. Wide variety of stories.
I’m a huge fan of this podcast, I look forward to it. I also love their “this is love” podcast. I have listened to every one and have been a fan from the beginning. It’s great cause the stories are so different. I love the interviews from the real life characters too. Always exciting and fresh. My favorite was the one in Texas where she visited the decomposing bodies... amazing!
When I get that question “What podcast should I listen to?” I almost always answer “Criminal.” It’s smart but universally appealing in this day of true crime podcast obsession. For those I know who love true crime, I see Criminal as a gateway from armchair detective pulp to smart storytelling. For people who are looking for something compelling, well it’s definitely that. And Phoebe Judge’s voice is just so good.
One of my first podcasts I ever listened to - loved binging it and thoroughly enjoy new episodes!
This is a great podcast and I love it, but my only thing is maybe some more emotion in your voice and talking a bit louder. Overall great production value and quality story telling. :)
Great podcast! Love Phoebe’s style and the episodes are always so intriguing. Makes the work day go by much faster!
I found this podcast on a whim, and I’m so glad I did! I can’t recommend it enough!
These episodes are so fascinating! Unusual and informative. Always looking forward to the next. Phoebes voice is so seductive sounding. Lol. Enjoying the unique perspective on all the episodes.
I enjoy the different types of crimes that are presented. Took a star away for the annoying anecdote at the beginning of each podcast.
While on a long road trip through Florida, I really wanted a show to imbue my car with the type of wild mysterious and murdery criminal ambiance that I expect of the Sunshine state. Criminal kept me awake, interested, and so paranoid. Ridiculously well-executed storytelling. I’m late to the Criminal party but happy I arrived.
Phoebe your podcast is brilliant! Your topics are always clever and insightful. The content is always well delivered and unfolds with true skill. You are the top shelf of podcasts. PS The distinct broadcast voice you have cultivated is your podcast’s elite packaging that sets you way ahead of the pack. Murder Fancier PSS Episode 24 and 25 have been so profound in my life. The things they have made me reflect upon and realize is profound. Elephant Micah’s ballads really hammer the lessons home for me. So profound
It’s impressive how well researched and concise the delivery of these stories is. I want Ryan Murphy to turn this into an anthology series. Great attention to detail. Love Phoebe. I binged all the episodes in like 3 weeks.
It’s so hard to get past. Very forced and grating.
One of the best podcasts out there
Kind of the Paul Harvey of the True Detective genre podcasts.
I love that each episode is so uniquely different and that the ‘criminal’ act is either so distant or so apparent that you’re perplexed most of the time. Also, go see her live, you’d be a fool not to.
Great variety of topics. Love her voice!
I became so immersed in this podcast a little over a year ago. The stories are absolutely inthralling, and Phoebe’s voice will keep anyone engaged. Every two weeks a new story encompasses you, and Phoebe finds a way to leave you satisfied or wondering.
I love listening to Criminal podcasts-especially on long road trips! After you’ve been in a car for 5+ hours solo, you might want to listen to something other than music and this is it!
Idk why everyone gets so hung up on her voice - it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s part of the presentation and if you just take it for a bit of performance, it’s not really bothersome. Y’all watch cartoons right? You know that’s probably not the voice actor’s “real” voice...right? Or the news? Or listen to audiobooks?! Just get outside the box a little. It’s all gonna be okay. The stories are fascinating and covered in a light way, with enough depth to do them justice. Highly recommended for anyone into crime/true crime/criminology and storytelling.
Phoebe’s voice is PERFECT! Makes the series. I love the different crimes that are reviewed and find each one interesting. I constantly recommend this one to people who ask for podcast suggestions.
Love the show thanks
Don’t podcast narrators know that we can tell when they are faking a voice? The whispering of this narrator makes my skin crawl because it’s fake. Then you hear her speak normally when interviewing people and it’s like why? Just use that normal voice. Cannot listen.
Love this show! I love how the story hooks you in. You think you’re going to hear about one thing and then somehow the story will go in completely the opposite direction
I wish this podcast came out more frequently. I look forward to new episodes, interesting and engaging content
So engaging! I love the variety and the delivery is always great!
This is the perfect combo of narrative, story, emotion, and a very pleasing voice that conveys everything she is feeling. I have listened to everyone and look forward to new releases.
Love starting my morning with this podcast. The stories are diverse, interesting. Found this podcast late and have already caught up, can’t wait for the next episode. EMazz06
Engaging and addicting!
Great stories and keep me on the edge of my seat! Keep them coming!
Great storytelling, fantastic host & holy crap the stuff you talk about! I love it. The only problem is that there isn’t a weekly podcast but I’ll survive 🤣🥰
I started listening to Criminal because I love the true crime genre. Out of that initial interest came a heartfelt love affair with the show. I really mean that. It is so good. Pheope has the such an amazing voice and presence along with an ability to connect with people in such a tender way. I will cry if this show ever ends.
Well done. Love the stories. Intelligent, interesting. Well thought out research. All it fascinating! Love Phoebe judge. Thank you! Bring us more! I’m hooked. Your fan from SLC, UT
I listen to a lot of non-fiction podcasts, even in other languages, and Criminal is the best, by far (even ahead of my other fav, the excellent yet spooky Death in Ice Valley). Phoebe could read the phone book (or whatever the modern equivalent is) and I’d listen. The stories are top-notch and the episode lengths are perfect (I just wish she’d make twice as many). Can’t wait til she goes international.
The writing is first-rate, the subject matter endlessly fascinating, and the host, Phoebe Judge, has one of the finest voices on the air--gentle, expressive, thoughtful, unmannered. I get tired of voices easily (this means you, Krista Tippet), but after 110 episodes Phoebe's voice hasn't lost its freshness for me.
Criminal is my favorite podcast. It is in a league of its own. The stories you tell are fascinating but never scandalous. You connect with people, especially victims of a crime, in such a personal way that it sets you apart from all other podcasts out there. Phoebe Judge's voice is easy to listen to. She does a great job of letting the story take center stage. I truly admire the work that you are doing and look forward to each new episode. Keep up the great work.
This is truly my favorite podcast. It has a wonderful host, producers and artist. The stories they tell are interesting and personal. One of my favorite parts of listening is knowing that each story has a different twist. It’s not just about murder and mayhem but about what it is to actually be Criminal. Everyone should give it a listen. You won’t regret it.
I’ve listened to every episode for the past two years, and have enjoyed every one.
Her voice is absolutely mesmerizing... and I love they find the most interesting stories one of the best podcasts out there.
It’s hard to find a podcast which contains stimulating material, AND a host you resonate with. This one has it all. Every show keeps you on the edge of your seat. Phoebe articulates her sentence in such a fashion, and her voice is so pleasant, that she is addictive to listen to. Impressive amounts of research are put into each episode. It is obvious that the group behind this show were destined to be doing what they do....because they are stellar!
I love this podcast so much. The stories are fascinating and the host tells them so well, exploring the nuance and fascinating little details as she goes.
Phoebe and her team do an incredible job of setting up the scene and drawing you in to such a wide variety of stories. I can't stop listening and find myself hitting "next" without bothering to read the description. Because the topic doesn't matter...it will be mesmerizing! Thanks for all you do!
This is one of the first podcasts I ever listened to. My sister forced me to listen to the brownie lady episode on a road trip and I’ve been in love with it ever since. I love Phoebe’s voice and the amazing stories that they put together. It’s always different in the end than what I expected at the beginning. Keep on making great content.
In the world of many many podcasts it’s not hard to find ones with very low quality recording equipment. What’s even harder is finding a funded, well scripted, edited nicely with a good story podcast that also has AWFUL sound. Most people listen to podcasts with their headphones on which means they hear every little sound. The soft whispering voice of the host is so grating to the nerves. The constant whisper but not whisper makes the listener want to throw Their headphones. The mouth noises (popping of spit, smacking, swallowing Etc...) of those interviewed makes you simultaneously thirsty and angry. Do better. There’s loads of sound equipment out there to fix these problems. Plenty of Podcasts have found ways around this.
I listen to A LOT of podcasts about A LOT of different topics but I seldom take time to write reviews. On a road trip with my husband today we starting talking about the latest podcasts we’ve heard, and I pulled up Criminal. Since we have several hours to kill in the car, I read poor reviews out loud (one of our favorite past-times... look up reviews on cruises sometime, you’ll see why). I cannot BELIEVE that Phoebe’s voice was a factor, AT ALL. She has one of the most memorable voices of any podcaster I have heard. And don’t even get me started on some people’s notions of what the podcast should cover, sheesh. People are just plain petty. Criminal is a professional, informative, entertaining and well-edited podcast, and Phoebe Judge is a Rockstar amongst podcasters.
When you think you’ve heard it all in the ever growing true crime genre, Criminal has maintained it’s capacity to delight and astonish well after those more tired offerings. And Phoebe Judge has a perfect voice, so that doesn’t hurt.
Excellently produced show, love Phoebe’s voice, incredible stories with amazing research. The show just got a recommendation/shoutout on Elvis Duran’s morning show (NY-Z100). Great things for a great show.
Been a listener for years. Thank you for covering Simmons’ story. People need to hear these stories and rarely are they covered. Feel free to do it more often!
Tastefully done, great story telling and very interesting stories. Love Phoebe’s voice!
This is the most intelligent podcast about crime. Covers a large variety of criminal behavior in a sensitive manner.
I have been listening to Criminal for two years now. When I first found it I listened episodes back to back for days until I was caught up.
This podcasts features interesting crime stories that you often have never heard of before. The stories are well researched and it's just a stimulating listening experience all around!! Definitely worth a listen!
I’m interested in certain aspects of crime. The Criminal podcast relates stories in an interesting way without being gratuitous.
Love this podcast!
How they manage to fit in the background, meat of a story, and conclusion...all with in-depth detail....into 25 minute episodes is amazing. And my morning commute thanks you!
Love this podcast! I love the variety of stories and I always learn something new. I just finished listening to all of them! Highly recommend this podcast
A really interesting variety of stories. Great interviews and storytelling. Some I have to skip because of violent/disturbing content so I appreciate that Phoebe always gives a warning.
Love the wide variety of stories and the excellent story telling!
I am constantly surprised by the depth and breadth of stories tackled by criminal. Fascinating, compelling stuff.
Please make an hour long episodes or longer it’s almost a waste of time to listen for 20 minutes.
I love the mix of history and drama. Hard to believe these are real stories! They are quite varied, but like a box of chocolates I like all the kinds they've done.
Such interesting stories, I always learn something. Phoebe has a different perspective and I find her voice soothing.
Good stories but so poorly executed with poor build-ups and bad music creating a lame atmosphere. The host doesn’t have a good enough presence to narrate the story either.
I love how candid Nicole is. She’s so hilarious and her guests are equally hilarious. I honestly have no idea why she’s single because I think she’s probably one of the funniest people I’ve listened to in a very long time. I wish I had a friend like her because she’s absolutely amazing. Her humor is just so effortless and wonderful. She really has talent!
I absolutely love this podcast! I have learned so much interesting history through these episodes!
Love the podcast, love the content, love the host.
I like the stories but the person narrating it is difficult to listen to unfortunately.
Cannot handle narrators voice. Unsubscribes!
This is one of the most interesting and bizarre podcasts I subscribe to, and I like that it manages to be true crime without being grisly, and expose harsh realities like Georgia Tann, omg, without being a constantly depressing slog. And I love Phoebe Judge’s voice. She and Roman Mars have the best voices in podcasting and I’m here for it!
I can’t get over how much I love Phoebe’s voice and how interesting this podcast is. Well written, beyond interesting, captivating, and such beautiful crazy stories that I am having a hard time doing anything other than listen to this show.
Very soothing and draws me into the stories. Fascinating journalism and storytelling
I’ve been in love with this podcast for the last few years and can’t get enough. Some say her voice is off, but I find it soothing. She brings interesting perspectives and digs up neat well packaged stories that help you see the world a little differently. 6/5 stars I just wish she put out episodes more often! Also her this is Love spin-off is fabulous must listen.
Phoebe judge don’t ever change
The podcast itself is great and has a lot of interesting content but the narrator’s voice is so annoying that I had to unsubscribe
odd stories that don’t need a deep deep dive or drawn out narrative to be compelling. high quality sound design; Phoebe’s voice is especially nice
This show is a MUST for any fans of true crime podcasts.
My title says it all. Once in a long while, I find an episode uninteresting, to me at least. That is the exception though.
From Phoebe’s voice to the in-depth story telling ,this show remains my favorite.
I’ve listened to criminal from the very first...the one about the owl...which eventually became a huge Netflix/HBO series-can’t remember which one...but Criminal, has gone down hill. It’s quite boring...and Phoebe, doesn’t make the series any more interesting. Her questions are boring now. I want to believe in Criminal...but I also listened to the podcast where Phoebe had to practice her voice in order to become the narrative for Criminal...so is it about Phoebe’s voice at this point or the story? Both boring.
I have loved this podcast from the beginning. Great storytelling and insight into the darkness of humanity and the emotional experiences of life. Phoebe draws you in to the story, her voice so easy to listen to.
Thanks for telling such beautiful stories Phoebe! They have such a beautiful perspective and they ask all the right questions!
Firstly. I enjoy the story giving light to the circumstances on both sides of the crimes. I don’t think it’s “sympathetic” but thoroughly informative. Second. Phoebe’s voice is sooo soothing. I have pretty serious anxiety. And noises really throw me through a loop sometimes. But this podcast is so calming because of her tone. I enjoy the lack of banter. And the transparency in detail. Thank you guys 🙏😇♥️
First an foremost, I love the host’s voice. She makes everything feel extremely neutral and calm while still carrying a lot of context and intrigue. That goes a long way for me and it is really what makes a podcast good. What makes this podcast extremely good is the added quality and structure. I don’t want to go into it, but check out an episode with just that in mind. How did the editor piece these parts together? How is it that I can’t predict whats going on until the last moment but am still hooked? I’ve listened to every episode twice and may make it a third time. Thank you!
This podcast has the most interesting stories. It’s not just the typical true crime who’s the killer stories it’s other “criminal” stories too. Each episode is around a half hour long making of the perfect show to drive to and home to work listening too. Absolutely love this podcast!
Love this podcast. I’m addicted! I love that each episode is unique and surprising. Best podcast ever!!
Good show. It’s interesting and not a big time commitment. Narrator is whispering for some unknown reason...
I never write reviews but I’ll make an exception for Criminal and for Phoebe. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a new episode is up and having no idea what the episode will be about. I don’t know how they do it, but I am hooked every single time. And for what it’s worth, I love Phoebe’s voice. This sounds terrible but I’m a woman that tends to prefer men’s voices when listening to a podcast but something about Phoebe’s voice is so soothing.
Her voice is way too annoying
When I heard about this podcast, I was so excited because I LOVE true crime podcasts. But sadly, this isn't for me. Can't get over her voice. It does not sound genuine. It's like she whisper-talks. It's so distracting that I find myself not paying attention to the story. There's too many good true crime podcasts out there to settle.
I listen to podcast to get away from political points of view. If that’s what you want, you will want to steer clear of this left leaning podcast. Not every episode has an agenda, but they have more than their fair share. They are especially gun control biased. Listened to my last podcast today because of the agenda. Drop the politics and report about various criminal cases.
Phoebe is the best. Great narrator and storyteller consistently delivering gripping content. Seriously- she’s the best.
This podcast is always compelling, well researched, and enlightening. Love it!
I am a Phoebe Judge devotee. Her reporting is excellent. She manages to find interesting subjects without too much repetition, each approaching the theme of the show from a different angle. Her voice is soothing and pleasant to listen to. I look forward to new episodes of Criminal for my commute. Thanks, Criminal team!
These are short bursts of interesting — sometimes fascinating — true-life stories, worth listening to despite the host's faux sexy voice. Her natural voice, as heard in many interviews or even entire episodes (no. 7), is quite nice. Using it would add some realism to the presentation, which otherwise can come across as fake — someone trying too hard to achieve a sound.
Why is she using that inflection in her voice?
Some great stories. Very interesting content. Such potential. But what’s up WITH THE WHISPERING?? Definitely one of the most annoying and distracting rookie podcast errors. Is a baby sleeping in the room next door? Do you think it sounds professional? It doesn’t. Talk in your grownup voice!
I am a long time listener and I never know what direction the next new podcast in my feed will bring.
Works better if you say it out loud.
Her voice makes me want to cry
This podcast is so interesting. Each episode is satisfying. If you are intersted in anything having to do with history, true crime, or women who kick butt, this podcast scratches all the itches. It will launch you on a Wikipedia rabbit hole you won't want to be rescued from.
What makes someone a criminal? Is it going to jail? Getting arrested? Breaking a penal code-type law, or is it a moral question? This podcast explores many types of crimes and the people who commit them. Crime isn’t always cut and dried, black and white. The people involved - both those who break laws and those affected by those acts - have nuances, feelings, and opinions that can make you really ponder crime and criminals in different ways. And Phoebe Judge has a really smooth voice - easy to listen to!
This is a suspenseful,spectacular podcast
Interesting podcast, episode 14 is good and I’m glad the man was exonerated, but did u have to put in the audio of his sucking his snot in every 30 seconds. Disgusting.
Intuitive, really pleasant to listen to, good speed and easy rhythm to follow. In all really pleasing. Not always on criminals per-se, but the topics related to criminal activity or homicides, for example; bodies used/donates to study how decomposition works, in different climates outside. Or, vulture activity- “sky burial” Another podcast discussed agenda of a large corrupted corporation. And others discuss very personal situations. There is no swearing (unless it’s a direct quote) and in short, it’s superb listening.
I listen to hundreds of podcasts; seriously! I look forward to Criminal more than any of the others! Thank you for keeping my conversations interesting!!!!
I’ve listened to three episodes: the first two and the most recent one. The conversation never really seems to go anywhere; the podcast host uses her overly put-on NPR voice as we listen to boring narration about events that are irrelevant to most of us. The podcast is produced well, which makes it sound like we’re listening to something substantive when we’re really not at all. I’m moving on.
I have told so many people about Criminal it’s not even funny. I tell them “I could listen to Phoebe read the encyclopedia”, Phoebe maybe you could do that as your next project. :0). Seriously they are all so interesting and Phoebe never disappoints. If I ever am lost and need something to listen to, I relisten to episodes. I especially loved the one where Phoebe played all the people “pretending to be Phoebe” as I do it alllllll the time in my car! Keep up the good work!!! I would give this 100 stars if I could.
Great and interesting podcast. Totally love listening to it. Side note... the people talking need to drink some water before talking. It’s so hard to listen to the dry mouth lip smacking talk. For example, episode 35 was REALLY hard to listen to. The lip smacking and dry mouth sound in my ears were giving me the chills. Ugh!
We LOVE your podcast phoebe it is so mysterious and it is all so interesting it gives me some were to go when I have to stay were I am Love you phoebe your so awesome
Not only does Phoebe Judge have the most incredible voice to listen to, her journalism is amazing. She is so thoughtful with her stories and thoughtful with how she approaches her guests. The way she guides the interviews allows the person speaking to take power over their own stories. She is incredibly respectful, empathetic, and the stories she chooses to share are perfect stories of humanity. Wait? Did I write a review about criminal or just Phoebe!??? Oh well 🤗
Criminal is a great mix of stories that are seemingly “local” and folklore, in some cases. Phoebe and the Criminal team bring the stories that you probably would have never heard of in your life. For this history junkie, the stories are a perfect mix of funny, sad, surprising, and jaw dropping. Keep up the great work!
Very influential and informative. Thank you For putting out such a good Podcast!
I love this podcast and that the family is telling the story . First episode is so interesting. Can’t wait for more !
Whenever someone is new to podcasting, this show is one that I recommend they try. I love the variety of types of crime, and Pheobe's voice is so soothing : )
This is a captivating podcast, I get so caught up in the stories that I don't realize time is passing. It's the kind of criminal podcast I didn't realize I wanted, as told by the people who were there.
I heard Ms Davis interviewed on Fresh Air by my favorite and the most intelligent interviewer I know, Terry Gross. Because of this I almost did not listen to this story but happily I gave it a chance. Ms Davis I know certainly contributed mightily with her artistry of storytelling and that is a huge part of my enjoyment of this story. I am writing to acknowledge the beautiful production and intelligent interviewing by Phoebe and team. I've listened to you for quite a while and enjoy your podcast but I believe you have out done yourselves with this one. Wow! Great job!
I just started listening to this one a few months ago and it quickly became an all-time favorite. Every episode is lovingly researched and presented with thought and compassion. And it's always an intriguing listen.
The podcast is very well done and presents subject matter in thoughtful way. However, many of the episodes are presented in a liberal tone, with no consideration given to opposing points of view. It’s a 5 star podcast that’s definitely worth your time, but if you’re looking for balance, you won’t find it here.
Is that voice for real?
I love, love this podcast! Unlike other crime podcasts, this one keeps my attention by touching on all types of crime from white collar to murder. My only disappointment is that each episode is short at about 25 minutes.
Would love to know where the money went! Follow up please!
I love everything about this show, I have enjoyed each episode, and Phoebe’s voice is like butter!
This podcast is fine. I honestly cannot BELIEVE they gave credence to the owl theory in the Staircase murder. That is just bad and irresponsible journalism. That theory was presented by the defense at a desperate hour with no substantial evidence. If you don’t know of the case and this is your first introduction that is extremely unfortunate. The rest of this is okay at best.
I don’t love the female host’s voice (Phoebe?), she sounds like she’s making her voice artificially smooth, it’s grating.
I don’t know how Phoebe finds all these interesting stories?! All her stories are so captivating!
I love this podcast so much! It’s creative and there’s always a twist to each story. I love Judges voice also!!
Informative. Surprising. Well done.
Hits all the right notes in its reporting and Phoebe Judge’s voice
I love Phoebe's voice and the off-beat take on what "criminal" means. This is my favorite podcast.
Phoebe is excellent, stories are clever. And as an added benefit-Phoebe’s voice is easy to sleep to in the middle of the night when you need to turn off the brain.
This is a great podcast, with many interesting and wide ranging stories. Wish they had more content more often! Listen now.
I love phoebe’s voice. She keeps me interested which is hard whenever you’re just listening. Great content, I’m obsessed, I’ve Ran out of episodes to listen to.
But lately the stories have been pretty weak and this last episode on the Winchester House wasn’t even about crime. The early episodes were excellent, but it seems this podcast has fallen off since the narrator has started a second podcast. I’ll probably unsubscribe if the next episode is as lackluster as this latest one.
The host’s voice is so annoying that I can’t focus on the story. Her breathy tone is obviously fake as you hear her normal tone in clips of other conversations.
I am a huge fan of true crime. I love love LOVE criminal. Discovered this one after Serial came out. The host has such a nice voice and I love the different stories and the length is perfect.
Podcast use to be great when they didn’t push their beliefs in every episode. Now they do so many subtle episodes pushing gun control and politics. Just go back to what you use to do
This episode is especially good. It gave me a new appreciation of our law enforcement. While none of the calls in this episode were extremely dangerous, several of them could have been. Our officers never know. They just go where called.
This is the only Podcast my husband will listen to while we travel. Interesting and informative, and storytelling in a way that is unforgettable. Love it!!
Criminal is my favorite podcast. I love the variety in subjects. I absolutely love her voice.
Even if the content is great, her delivery and up and down cadence is so freaking annoying that I tried to listen to more than 2 episodes and want to take a Dramamine for my motion sickness.
Criminal is truly the best true crime podcast out there. It’s consistently great. It’s not just the gorey stuff either, Phoebe Judge and her team tackle other interesting true crime stories, like prison escapes and what it’s like to be a 911 operator.
I love this podcast they can’t come out with episodes fast enough.
Great Podcast! She gives excellent interviews and very interesting stories!
This is hands down my favorite podcast, I’ve been a podcast junkie for 3 years now and I listen to criminal faithfully.
Well done, short informative stories about everything to do with a bunch of crimes. Phoebe voice is great . Can’t stop listening since I started.
I’m an avid podcast listener and came across this one after hearing it mentioned on another show. It’s so good. I’ll skip some episodes, but for the most part they’re all very interesting. And I just love Phoebe. Highly recommend!
I can’t get passed her voice trying to sound like a corny porn. Stories are okay though.
Earlier episodes are really good, but it seems that the more recents episodes are really just a paint by numbers or their just going through the motions. Don’t know if they’re having trouble finding content or their just not into this podcast anymore and ready to move on.
I really like this podcast but phoebe’s voice is like nails on chalkboard. Sometimes I have to turn it off. It’s so over exaggerated. There is no way she talks like that on real life. It’s really distracting.
I love this show. The host has a wonderful voice. I recommend this series to anyone that enjoys podcast.
I initially was disappointed in the sound quality when playing via my iPhone 7+. I started listening to the first episodes but now I’m listen in order from newest to oldest. I also am listening though a wireless speaker. I now have no complaint about the audio. I love how the stories are told... slowly, intelligently and thoughtfully. They are tastefully told so if your looking for graphic gory details this won’t be to your liking. Phoebe Judge’s voice is like butter. This is my favorite pod cast.
I absolutely love listening to this podcast. I love their ideology of what encounters criminals and what causes them to take those actions. Is it simply by choice, fate, and destiny? Why do people choose to commit such actions. It’s quite fascinating. The interviews help determine the perceived understanding from different aspects. From the victims to the criminals. Truly great work.
Love the show, great choice of interesting cases. But just one question ... does everyone down under wear a Jump-a? What is a Jump-a? I envision people all wearing onesies running around there. Lol. But seriously, great show.
Fantastic storytelling in a snackable way. Phoebe is a smooth, smart host who allows these stories to unfold in the best way possible. They are human, they are interesting and this is my favorite podcast out there.
I really like this podcast. They’re well-produced, informative and entertaining. So many times I’ve caught myself saying “holy moly I’ve already driven this far?” Thats a sign of a great podcast. They’re always interesting and usually done in an upbeat way that makes the mind feel refreshed and stimulated. I wouldn’t mind if they were slightly longer too. Just sayin.
this podast is insane and amazing! i love learning new things from it!
You never know what each episode will be about but know it will be engaging.
The Criminal crew does an amazing job. I genuinely look forward to every new release, so much so I was inclined to write my first review. Not your typical crime podcast, so much better. Highly recommend.
My fav podcast and one of the best out there. Quirky, suprising stories about criminals, crimes and all things related. Listen to one episode and you'll be hooked (I was!).
If you like True Crime shows or Podcasts this one is exceptional. This is my favorite true crime podcast for sure but it’s so much more than true crime like when Phoebe interviewed the guy who started the Witness Protection program; I couldn’t believe how interesting that was.
I could listen to Phoebe talk about anything and everything. This is an extremely well done podcast that is the perfect balance of entertainment and education. Phoebe Judge's ability to story tell are phenomenal and will have you thinking the same. I find you can listen to this podcast whilst doing very mundane tasks and you will find it adds some flavor to your day...
Criminal has heart, soul, and a conscience. A must listen!
This is a great way to open your mind to things you might not typically think.
Crimes and criminal discussed with dignity.
I absolutely love this podcast! The firsthand perspective is fascinating. All of the stories are more than what they initially seem and they are presented with care compassion by Phoebe and her team! Download them all!!
My all time favorite podcast!
I suppose the content could be great but Phoebe’s voice is a complete snooze fest. Some of the episodes are just uninteresting.
Every inch of this podcast is what I look for. Immediately graves your attention and leaves you in complete awe. 10/10. Highly recommend.
Most of the stories are interesting but the episodes are so short that you don’t get as much information as you would like. The infrequency of the episodes is also quite annoying.
I feel like the narrator is intentionally trying to sound pretentious.
I love this show. And can’t wait for Friday’s when the episodes come out. All the best day to drive into work. A unique twist on crime and not your typical murder mysteries.
This is an excellent podcast to listen to in bed because the host’s tone is so soothing, but you won’t want to fall asleep because the stories are so fascinating! From visiting body farms to interviewing airplane high jackers this podcast covers a variety of crime related topics. Phoebe Judge is amazing and I look forward to new episodes (but enjoy repeats for bedtime).
Just finished going through the back catalog. I have to say this is one of the best true crime podcast I have tried out. Amazing work and wonderful stories.
I was so excited to listen to this because I love true crime. I usually don’t knock on the voice of the host if it’s irritating to me but this one is just awful. It’s an obvious choice, and a bad one at that and makes it hard to listen. I’m disappointed.
I literally suffer through an episode at times, because I can’t stand the soft, breathy voice coming through my car stereo. Can we please limit the amount of time the host narrates the story? I think the stories are really compelling, and I do enjoy them. But the host’s voice GRATES.
I’ve listened to every episode twice. I’m a true crime fan- but this podcast offers so much more. From the underground economy of Venus flytraps to art fraud to more typical true crime genre, it’s one of the best podcasts around. I can’t recommend it more highly.
I really like phoebes narrative and interviewing methods!
I am shocked to hear the host ask/make some ridiculously stupid questions/statement. For example, in The Manual episode she asks the interviewee to explain what a book entitled something like “How to Carry Out a Murder Hit” is about. And then she states she thought the hiring of hitmen only happens in the movies. Say what?? Has she never watched a 48 Hours or Dateline NBC or 20/20 episode? Or read about a murder for hire in the thousands of true crime book examples? I mean come ON. Either she is really dumber than her podcast reflects or she thinks her listeners are idiots.
Love the content and stories, but the audio on Phoebe’s voice is rough and rubs me the wrong way. Seems like there’s a lot of breaths and annoying “s”es in the mix. Other than her voice I like the podcast which opens my eyes to the world.
Very much in love with this podcast - the stories are interesting, touching, odd, inspiring and sometimes very sad. The way these stories are told is phenomenal. Phoebe is a smart journalist and empathetic interviewer. Great work!
Very one-sided with very little journalistic integrity. There is a disservice done to the truth when the story isn’t told correctly. She is just as bad as everyone she mocks.
I love Phoebe Judge’s voice, and I’m absolutely baffled that some people do not. Her voice and nature are very warm without being syrupy or inauthentic. I feel she is so relatable, and she asks the questions that I would ask and explains the things I want to know. Every episode is so different and so interesting.
Can’t get enough
So great, i have listened to all episodes! Some not so great but others so so good :) patiently waiting for more episodes
Such unique short stories, keeps me wanting more!
I’ve been listening to Criminal for years, and it never ceases to keep me engaged and interested. Phoebe has a great voice and excellent interviewing style. The content varies so much while still staying true to its theme. Some episodes (the tree poisoning one in particular) are less riveting than others, but in general the stories are unique and compelling without being sensational or exploitative.
Shows are shorter and very interesting. I'm addicted!
The topic are interesting and well researched. The biggest flaw is the soporific voice of Ms. Judge. When she is questioning a subject live, her voice changes and becomes lively, engaging. At all other times, she is so deliberately “professional” that the delivery is a monotone. Shame really.
Been listening since the beginning. It took a minute to digest Pheobe's voice but I am mesmerized. I think that has a lot to do with the draw of this podcast. Her delivery is unique & I rather think she has become a kind of Terry Gross of the Crime genre. The recent "Ride Along" episode was an interesting idea; right there with a regular officer on regular duty without all the edited hype like is presented on so many TV shows. Keep up the good work, Ms. Phoebe (and crew). You have made a unique program of a sometimes heartbreaking subject. I feel like, at some point, I might see a 60 Minutes episode featuring you because I truly believe there's "something" about you from the moment I heard "I'm Pheobe Judge...."
I love Phoebe’s voice and narration style. She soothes me after a hard day and lifts me up ... when I want to be educated, she does let me down! Thank you Phoebe ! Keep up the good work!
The way host reads is too much for me... if you’ve ever seen SNL spoofs of podcast hosts, I’m sure this is who they have in mind. The content is meh. I watch a lot of crime shows and there isn’t anything being offered here that you can’t get somewhere else with more artistic story telling. Also the music seems random and out of place. This one is a pass for me.
Beautifully written and hosted. Beyond thoughtful and engaging. I am mesmerized by each episode. Thank you!
If you’ve listened to Serial, this will be a let down. But, I gave a bonus star on pure fascination that multiple producers listened to the narration and said, “Yes, I want it to sound like outlaw bedtime stories read to convict toddlers.” I can barely hear the words through the exaggerated attempt to sound compelling. My five year old niece overheard it, and she said “What’s wrong with that lady’s voice?” A lot, dear child. A lot.
I have listened to Criminal from the early days. Since then true crime has taken off, but in a sea of true crime stories Criminal stands alone. These are world class crafters of stories, produced with care, attention and nuance that is still as rare and remarkable as it was when they first started. Criminal is a treasure.
I’ve been around since the beginning of the podcast and for four years now this has remained one of the most charming and well-made podcasts I’ve ever found. It’s mandatory listening if there ever was such a thing.
And always interesting!
One of the best Podcasts out there.
How has this podcast gotten so many positive reviews? I feel like I can’t even concentrate on the content because the host’s voice or how it carries is beyond distracting. I can only describe it like she is trying to seduce you while reading off a script in a news anchors tone.
What we need is more advertisements and less content. Oh, wait. Huh. Who knew the producers felt the same way? What was once a great show is nothing more than a translucent veil for ads. Too bad. It used to be great.
I listen to a ton of podcasts. Many in the crime and true stories realm. I’m a newish listener here so I’ve been working my way backwards and so far i have enjoyed every episode. This podcast is in my top 5 favorites for sure. I read that many people find the host’s voice annoying.......I find it almost soothing 🤷🏼♀️ She speaks clearly sound quality is always good and she doesn’t make any weird noises like SO MANY hosts I’ve heard. To each their own I suppose.
I highly recommend this podcast! There is something for everyone. Some episodes have the potential to keep me up at night but, afterwards, I listen to a feel-good episode and it works like watching a cartoon after a scary movie. Episodes are only about 30 minutes long and packed with substance.
I absolutely love this podcast! The episode lengths are great & the content is so interesting! Definitely recommend giving it a try if you haven’t already!
So thoughtfully and professionally executed stories. This podcast is like a work of art.
Truly one of my all-time favorite podcasts. Stories are so varied and often take an unexpected turn. Can’t express the excitement when there’s a new episode in my feed... and until then, I’ll gladly re-listen!
This podcast is very educational and interesting. I love to listen to this and Can’t wait to hear more from the Criminal team. Thank you!
An sober and non-judgmental view into humans and the crimes they commit. Favorite episode: He’s Neutral. I used to pass that Buddha on walks with my dog and had no idea it had such an interesting story.
I’m a new listener so I’m listened backwards. I just listened to “Just Mercy” with Brian Stevenson and it has completely changed my outlook on the world, mercy, justice and the legal system. Thank you Phoebe for being a host that listens to your guests and asks the hard questions.
I’ve been following it for years, never regret listening to it
I walk away loving most episodes. Ride Along is my all time favorite and I wish it never ended.
Criminal is my favorite podcast. Always something different with an interesting look at past and present crimes, victims, law enforcement, etc. Episode 102 “The Ride-Along” (with a police officer) could be a new podcast subject on its own. So interesting to hear what our police officers go through everyday on the job, enlightening the public.
This is an excellent series of podcasts. Lots of variety and points of view. The podcasts look at all facets of crime and criminal behavior. Subscribe and enjoy.
Love this podcast, love her voice, love her story telling!
Nails in a chalkboard when she gives accolades to Bill.
Great job phoebe
Excellent podcast. Every episode finds a new kind of surprise about human behavior and sometimes happenstance.
100+ episodes so wonderfully produced and executed!
Phoebe Judge’s thorough interviews from such a wide variety of characters is addicting. Who knew these people existed? And her voice brings calm to our current obnoxious news rhetoric. Be prepared for the need to tune in every day to play catch-up.
Thank you for curving away from politics. I’m assuming that the creators aren’t big republican or Trump fans and that’s whatever. I just appreciate you hiding your bias now.
Love it. Keep it coming.
Phoebe Snow does a terrific job, is highly articulate, with complex and fascinating stories. Great radio voice as well. I consider Criminal the gold standard of true crime podcasting.
Great stories, great research, great presentation. 10/10
I love this podcast! It’s only become better since when it first came out. I read the reviews of people who gave it one or two stars and they literally complained because they didn’t like the narrator’s voice or something. Give me a break. The content is incredible. The stories are unique. I’ve never been bored listening to this podcast and it’s a great way to pass some time while driving or other similar activity. As for the narrator’s voice? I personally have no problem with it.
Almost every single episode is so interesting to me and it has been a great thing to listen to on the way to work. So glad it exists.
I love this podcast for a few reasons. The stories are super entertaining regardless of the topic. They’re short so it gets right to the point. And Phoebe herself- voice, personality - are so so good!
