I've listened to since day one, World Cup 2006, and really doubt I've ever missed an episode. While I always thought Max was a very able deputy to ACJimbo I wasn't expecting him to surpass him as a host to the world's premiere football podcast. But he has. Like the sage you've mistaken for the villiage idiot, he just smiles beinignly when you insult him, and the next moment he's moderating a discussion about issues like racial inequalities and human rights abuses. Kudos all around.
A regular morning listen on my runs. I particularly want to thank you for the discussion of club ownership, soft power and human rights. Excellent work. I hope you’ll do more of that kind of thing.
I walk my dog as an excuse to listen to every one of your episodes. She asked me to thank you for her. I am regularly citing information I get from your pod to people who don’t care. No one in my life is interested in having football conversation, so I am glad I get to listen to yours. 5 stars
Love the podcast. Diverse views and well represents many parts of the football world, focusing the most on British leagues as well as the top European leagues. Always good for a laugh and some very intriguing insights from football people... also responding to another review: they shouldn’t have American guests, I’m American and, yes, we’re stupid.
You are absolutely a full on Grump. But that is one of the main reasons this podcast is tremendously entertaining!
Why do you hate Pulisic?
Counterpoint to one of last commenters - no, they don’t need American guests. I’m American and we’re stupid.
Would like to hear an American guest on the show.
The European es dome with Nicky, Sid and Archie is a favorite. Hope this panel stays together. Always a great listen!
Outstanding program by knowledgeable folk who have become like friends from across the pond. Can’t wait for the day they do a live show here in the states. And, can we please have more Barry? He rocks!
I love the pod. Always informative with a solid mix of laughs. I would’ve given it a 5 star review but I can’t stomach Philip Auclaire. He’s a miserable wet blanket who brings the show down with his hatred of football.
Technically there is nothing wrong with it, morally it is wrong..........he was talking about Liverpool furloughing staff, I am talking about asking for money for the pod, at this time. Love the pod, don’t agree with the Guardian politically, but the writing is very good and enjoy almost all of the presenters. I would subscribe or buy episodes on a weekly basis assuming the quality remains (and we start playing football again soon), but asking for a handout in the current climate left a sour taste.
Its long, its indulgent, it has plenty of dry british humor. The highlight of my week.
I usually listen in my way to work, but since the school district that I work for has a snow day today, I’m listening while cutting fabric for a baby blanket.
Max is a more than able facilitator. Love the insight of the regular guests - Barry, Philippe et al. Only complaint is the heavy mouth breathing into someone’s mic (Barry?), which is rather distracting. Apart from that, keep up the great work.
Terrific football show, does a great job covering world football with an emphasis on the premier league. Episodes are excessively long, usually over an hour twice a week, but regardless no other football podcast I’ve tried matches it for fun and insight.
I’ve never taken the time to rate a podcast before, but after hearing your convo with Archie about depression and mental health, I just had to. Phenomenal. Thank you all for your openness and seeing that there’s so much more to life than just football.
I love this podcast especially when Narry is on. One question, why don’t you make a podcast of the live specials for those of us who live outside the UK ??
I love this podcast. I wish there was something of the sort for my own league (I live in Argentina). But the main reason to leave this comment is not to praise, but to claim that due to my lack of knowledge of the members of the cast and my imagination I always picture Barry Denglenning as Jeremy Clarkson and now I don’t want to google Barry so I can keep that image alive
If it was just Wilson and Ronay every week, it would be 5*
Big fan of the post. I listen to you every week from Cuba
Brilliant. Only complaint is that it’s not on more often.
Jimbo was great, but Max arriving was a good change. He lightens it up. Good balance of topics for the average PL fan, knowledgeable guests, and good chemistry.
How long is the greatest character on the pod gone for? I’ll miss him
Love the show, great balance of characters, keep it up!
The numpties who rated anything below a 5 are numpties.
Please, please, please, no more talk on VAR. it’s destroying football and this podcast with it.
I used to listen to every episode if this. It’s brilliant in the discussion of club football, but I can’t stand the nauseating focus in the English National team during the international breaks. So I skip those now. I guess since the Guardian is an English and not an national paper I should know what to expect by now.
Always informative and entertaining. Absolutely love this pod.
I don’t need every pod to be an effusive praise of every little thing that has happened in the football world but too I think if the hosts don’t care, why am I listening?
Love this show and the extra version on Thursdays. Listen in the US. What these folks don’t know about football isn’t worth knowing. They’re often quite witty too!
Decent, if inconsistent EPL pod. The focus is almost completely on top 6 Premier League with some lip service to other football. I think Max does a solid job and is generally low ego, likeable and relatable but the quality of content really depends on guests. Often the grumpy bants from the awful dour Glendening, nonsensical Brewin, and self important Wilson can be almost unlistenable; but at its best (Barney, Lars, Bandini and a couple of others) its a fun and informative listen
I don’t play football. I don’t watch football. I have no interest at all in football. But there is something comforting about listening to well-informed, witty people discussing something they love. It’s like listening in on sewing circle. I never miss an episode.
I love this group—mostly Max, Barry, Lars, Jonathan, Lars, now Nicky—and look forward to every Monday and Thursday. I do this even though I know little about football culture and have no experience playing. I like to settle in with them, like being in a genial, funny group and not having to contribute myself.
This was already the driest, most poorly-paced football podcast I listened to. Last in the cue after I finished better options. Was very put off by Barry Glendenning on the latest episode. He showed his “intolerant curmudgeon” persona is more than a schtick. When he referred to the band Evanescence as “Jesus-Creeping Bible-Thumpers” (voice dripping with disdain) I knew I was finished. Can’t believe the co-hosts or, ultimately, a producer would not see this type of comment in extremely poor taste. But, this is the ultra-liberal Guardian, after all. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. Can you imagine a conversation like this on the podcast? “How about that goal by Riyad Mahrez?” “Well, he happens to be a Mohammed-loving Quran-thumper, but...it was a well-taken goal.” Clearly wrong. Clearly intolerant. Take a long, hard look at yourselves Guardian, and ask - “Why are we okay with this double-standard?”
“Are we obliged to patronize the referee” said Barry patronizing the referee.
Max is a terrific host combining wit and insight with a knack for keeping the conversation flowing. The panelists are always knowledgeable and odds are one of them was at a big game in person, which adds to the insight. Its always a good time listening to Barry as well. Can’t rate this enough.
Always a great listen! A great cast of witty, honest, and intelligent Journalist with great dialogue, inclusive and progressive views on the game. The team lead by Max brings a level of insight and detail including behind the scenes looks at all aspects of the game. Great humor and light hearted discussion makes this podcast so enjoyable.
Always on the look out for new pods on Mondays and Thursdays. I like the crew, the fun shared, and the articulations of all the pundits. Btw, Barry need to visit Abidjan to help with his French pronunciations.
I’ve loved the pod for many years and was one of the few that welcomed Max when Jimbo moved on, but the bias and favoritism that’s penetrated broader football coverage has gotten to the pod as well. I’d love to see fair coverage and appreciation for all the teams, but now it’s become obvious the pod and it’s regularly correspondents have their own angles. Just so disappointed in the negativity and coverage at the end of last year. Let’s keep the chat to on the field and understand the world of football has changed.
I’m a listener here in the US. I love the camaraderie of the varied pundits who get together for the episodes. I don’t even like the EPL that much (I’m besotted with La Liga) and yet I still never miss a pod.
This is trashhhhhh
Last Monday’s pod was a massive hack job. 1 minute of praise for a team that has just won 3 trophies followed by 30 minutes of sanctimonious repetitive negative clap trap.
Wish it was more football and less outside topic
Out of all the footy podcasts this one is the best. Entertaining, informative and insightful. Well done Guardian.
HOWEVER, this nasally guy needs to stop breathing, spitting, and slurping in my ear man move the mic back
I started listening with the 2018 World Cup. Then I had a terrible few months through which this podcast provided kind escape. I honestly English soccer partly so that I can continue to enjoy this podcast. Only request is more diversity among panelists. But regardless, five stars.
I listen every Monday and Thursday to both podcasts and this is the secret to happiness: listen to Jimbo’s nonsense before upgrading to Max, Barry and the gang. You always want to end on a high note! Love the show and the miscellaneous tangents it occasionally goes off on.
USA loves the Guardian Football Weekly! Thanks for this podcast!! I love it and enjoy the witty banter everyday. Even listen to episodes 2 to 3 times just to get my fix
Exceptional balance between informative content and big personality. I love the “laugh” culture around football. Information can become bland in football due to the sheer overload but these shows are full of color. Good balance of covering the game domestically and across wider leagues. Appreciate the update on Women’s Football. Couldn’t recommend more highly.
Love the way max hosts the show. He keeps it light but also his questions are similar to how followers think. I don’t play football but I think max and even Barry use easy language to discuss the game we love. Of course there is Barney Ronay who adds information in his serious style! Eagerly wait every Monday and Thursday to listen to you guys!
Truly, I was one of those who began listening to the pod for its cheerful bickering in the background, but I’m deeply invested in the lack of vegetables, the mystery Carabao box, and finally realizing that Sheffield Wednesday is the name of a team not just when Sheffield was playing.
With respect, I don't miss Jimbo one bit. Happy to have Max Rushden in my ears each week, and love the coverage of English and continental European football, and the humor and charisma of the panel and guests is wonderful.
It is better to have a non-racist commentary. In the latest episode about VAR gnashing one of the guys said he does not like Man U to support any Middle Eastern country (UAE, Dubai). That's a racist comment. Not that I am from that part of the world.
Living in the US it's never easy getting good football news. This fills my needs in a cc wet funny and entertaining way. I don't know how I managed to miss this podcast for so long. So glad I found it a few months ago!! Keep up the awesome work guys!
Not ex-player driven but rather run by football journos. Great banter, pop culture references and up to date football news. Kind of like being in the pub with mates on Saturday evening, pint in hand and an opinion top of one’s tongue. Keep it up.
There’s always a brilliant chemistry between whoever’s on the panel. It’s natural rather than what seems forced on other podcasts. I love it!
Same characters. Max and Barry spend too much time together for spontaneity. All the humor is used up at the Weekend at Talk Sport.
One of my favorite pods, up with The Football Ramble for favorite pods related to football. I started listening when Max became the host, and love each show. Great commentary, goodanalysis (I'd like more analysis, but that is my personal opinion), and very entertaining. Lots of breathers and Lars having revolting breakfasts.
Best soccer podcast
This is my favorite football podcast. Big fan of Barry glendenning.
Once Jimbo left I stuck with this pod for about a year, until I finally deleted it not long ago. IMHO they were just never the same quality afterwards.
I normally don’t write reviews but I just have to say I love this podcast. I just recently started watching football after the World Cup this year and I could get enough! Love the balance between humor and analysis. Keep it up!
I have not been able to download any of these since they switched to the World cup podcast series??
Well-informed and hilarious. Brilliant pod.
Barry Glendenning singing My Humps, enough said
Excellent pod. Best World Cup coverage out there
I was about to give it four stars, then Bazza did “My Humps” and that’s all I needed. Five stars. Best pod ever, of all time, and will never be beaten.
Come on guys please talk about the football. That’s what we listen to you for. There are loads of comedy podcasts and you aren’t the best comedians. Talk about the bloody football!!!!
As an American who discovered European soccer in 1978 via Public Broadcasting, for some reason I became a fan of Leeds United. Maybe it was from The Who album “Live at Leeds”, or maybe their away uniforms were yellow, my favorite color. Unfortunately for me, it was as Leeds we’re on the downslope. FYI - Trevor Cherry was a member of Leeds United at that time. Maybe Barry could read Digital Underground’s “Humpty Dance”.
Now that Max has been on the job as host for about a year, the show has really started to hum along very nicely. They have taken a turn for more naughty language being included in the broadcast which suits me just fine. The festive period show where the alcohol flowed rather freely will be forever memorable. Barry's misery and Jonathan's dourness make me laugh, roll my eyes, and just generally smile. Glad I stuck with it.
Hard to believe I’ve been listening to this show on and off for the last ten years - they’ve been thousands of well-spent hours. Still as good as ever.
This is still the most enjoyable football podcast I have encountered. The guys are funny, knowledgeable, and completgely lacking in that often present British arrogance and superiority about the game. Covers the EPL and the othermain Euro[e leagues. Plus most of them are genuine journalists with the Guardian, which counts for something.
Barry rendition of Craig Davis 7 days it’s my anthem before going out to have drinks on fridays nights. It’s better than the original
Great analysis, fun and generally neutral, except when they they talk about England, which is why they need Barry, to balance things out.
Great pod. Loads of fun. Lighthearted, but with significant analysis. Also, Barry, please have your agent shop you around as an audiobook reader.
If you want the best World Cup podcast try the Totally Football Show with Jimbo. Much higher production values. This podcast is still good though with some insightful and humorous guests. Max and Barry are great. The Argentinian lady expert is super annoying in every respect so her portions need to be skipped as a priority. Her pomposity is painfully at odds with Max and Barry’s relaxed style.
Thorough and honest analysis, and funny as well. A great listen.
Well researched presenters, bringing sound opinions and not afraid to speak their minds from time to time. The flow of the show can sometimes be relaxed and casual while not steering totally off topic. The humor is very, very British, so it could be a lot worse! Disappointed when I looked up what Barry looks like and find out he’s not actually an old, ale-drinking Irishman with gout and a swollen red nose. He actually looks a lot like an average bloke. So disappointing!
What is that crazy racism accusing Carolinnnnn ON about?? Some people. Looking for nastiness & incitement when it just aint there. Well I’m now incited.
I like the commentary BUT Stop joking about Neymar’s hair. I understand why so many people dislike him, but he is a person of color, and most of you are white? His hair should NOT be a talking point. It’s not football.
Always play this at work and the Americans don’t understand why I crack up so much - makes the LA traffic go by quick as well. Ps......max is a total knob - but that’s why we love him!!! Regards - Essex Boy in LA!!!
Pod has gone downhill a bit since Jimbo left but still pretty good. Thankfully they still have BArry and other great guests. Please don’t waste time talking about women’s football. Nobody cares and it’s boring. Otherwise the best footie pod there is.
The variety of panelists and their viewpoints is always amazing. I rarely miss an episode! The best football podcast, c’est fini.
Shame on you for your response to Real getting yet another assist from the ref... again this year. Again. The continuous discussion of negative comments about Rushton is boring, Wilson should stick to the written word (podcasts are not his strong point). Barry is alright, Paolo too. Philippe is more hit than miss. Better with guest hosts.
Love the interaction and all the different contributors that come in. Love to hear what’s for breakfast, and the trials of the Ireland adventure among the great soccer talk. Keep up the good work.
The podcast is still entertaining enough, but often the feed is unavailable for me to download the latest episode.
I haven’t been listening to this podcast during its whole run—only for the past four years or so. I don’t know if the issues brought out in this podcast were always constantly flattened out and presented as one-sided, but for some reason it’s more noticeable with Max Rushden at the helm. Recently they’ve presented issues such as Pep Guardiola’s yellow ribbon, Jamie Carrigher being suspended at Sky Sports, and club ownership as the faults of a select group of people (Pep, the person who filmed Carrigher spitting on a car, “oil money”), rather than present them as the morally grey issues they actually are. The club ownership wank, to me, is the most cringeworthy of all—it reminds me of going onto forums ten years ago where I’d see people shame Chelsea fans because of Abramovich to prove some sort of hypocritical and fallacious moral superiority over said fans. In addition, I find their brief coverage of non-English leagues lacking and unnecessary, since there are several podcasts covering those leagues and their issues more effectively than Football Weekly. I mean, Sid Lowe is fantastic, but I don’t have to continue subscribing to listen to ten minutes of his observations on La Liga, since he’s not confined to Football Weekly. Maybe I’ll pick up the podcast again sometime in the future if there’s a cast shakeup, but for now, I’m out. I don’t want to be frustrated whenever I hit “play” on this podcast.
Great podcast but can you put the guests in the description? I don’t have time to listen to two episodes a week but depending on who is on the line-up determines if I will find time to listen (eg I won’t miss one with Jonathan Wilson or Barney Ronay). It’s annoying having to go and check on Twitter who is on the episode. Cheers.
I love Max and Barry. Keep up the great work please.
Informative, funny, and just a joy. Barry is hilarious.
I’ve been a longtime listener, and have more often than not enjoyed the pod. Following Richardson’s departure I had doubts, but if anything the pod has been more consistent and more entertaining and more relaxed — and thus more enjoyable — than ever before. I appreciate the tangents and bonhomie apparent these days, none of which seems forced or practiced. Genuinely feels like I’m sitting around in the pub listening to some smart folks talk footy. Bonus points for the pod’s willingness to discuss the politics at work behind aspects of the game and its supporters, and their willingness to address such without letting the same dominate the discussion. Have to add that Barry’s presence these days is a huge plus for me (and back in the Richardson days that was not always the case, hmm, wonder if there was behind the scenes shenanigans going on...). I look forward to each new episode, and that may be the best compliment I can pay.
5 stars purely for the double barreled section this week. Love, Grace Feinman-Riordan
If you are a football fan then listen to this podcast. It is insightful and humorous. Barry Glendenning puts this podcast over the top, that man is hilarious and always hits the nail on the head. This is the podcast I most look forward to seeing new episodes from.
I started listenting to Football Weekly over two years ago and haven't missed an episode to date. Professional, humorous and full of great reporting and analysis, this podcast is a must for football fans. I laugh like a little kid every time. Love you guys.
From high above in near-earth orbit comes the most informative and funniest sports pod for our planet. Great soccer podcast ... I am American and call the game soccer, deal with it - I am as irreverent as the show.
Good insight, relevant guests and humor. I understand the Euro centric nature, but the condescending attitude toward non-Euro football does become tiresome.
The best football podcast. Funny!
Great - think of all the taxpayer money that goes to listen to Robbie savage, uniformed fans demanding more passion on 5 live
One of the best podcasts going. Funny and informative. Well done lads...
Love the show, but Mr Glendenning's peevish and repeated mockery of Mr Suarez's exhibition of grief at Selhurst Park on 5 May 2014 disappointed. -A Neutral
Genuinely World Class
Great podcast covering European Football (soccer). By far the best I've heard for the Premier League, also a lot of talk about the Champions League, and just enough of Spain, Italy, Germany, and France to get the important stuff.
Great to hear football being talked about intelligently and without any mention of the minor leagues, i.e. MLS in the States
Jumped the shark with Sid Lowe / Jimbo fan fiction. But oh oh Barry's always such a cutie! Gah! ESPN's big money lowfi crap looks better by the week (with many da same punditorouses - Kinda similar trajectory to US vs China freedom rates, if that helps).
What an incredible podcast. Hilarious and informative at the same time. I never miss a show.
Fix the audio issues. It is like listening to am radio. Horrible.
There is no podcast better for EPL or European football. Jumbo, Barry, and the rest are fun to listen to and have real insight into the beautiful game. Unless Stoke are playing, there's nothing beautiful about that.
Love the analysis, love the scope, love the light air and varying guests. This is THE BEST football podcast out there.
This podcast is a great way to keep up with english and world football in the USA
AC Jimbo, Barry and pals are the best pod of them all.
Consistently funny yet informative, covering the international football spectrum. It just needs more cake.
This podcast is always entertaining, and very informative. It may be hard to follow if you are a football novice, but keep listening and you'll soon be an expert.
Hands down the best Football podcast in the world.
The combination of intellectual humor and insightful analysis is unparalleled. After I discovered FW a couple of years ago, I gave up on other soccer podcasts. As a Yank, I particularly like the refusal to accept jingoist cant.
Informative, interesting and up to date analysis of the world game. Essential listening for any football fan.
AC Jimbo is the funniest man in sport. And the supporting cast is brilliant! I never miss it in season 2x a week. Love Barry G, he is hillarious and makes everyone else look smart. But don't miss Amy Lawrence: best woman writer on football in any language. And... And! Sid Low from Spain (usually on the train)! Yes, as an ugly American who loves European Football, this pod is my favorite.
Barry's not for real right? He's just there for comic relief and to make everyone else especially clever. Love the pod aside from mr G. Thank you.
AC Jimbo and the Glendenning are stars. The support cast are also very strong.
My favorite soccer podcast. Funny, irreverent and broad. Not just England but decent coverage of Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Even covered the MLS playoff final. Look for when Jonathan Wilson or Michael Cox are guests.
...with good analysis
Entertaining, informative and to the point. Well done.
Funny, well rounded, insightful. Top notch!
I thoroughly enjoy listening to this bi-weekly podcast here from the states. As a fan of English Football, I find Jimbo (the host) both entertaining and a good lead. Good rotation of journos on the panel each week.
Dear guardian, Thanks for a great podcast. I would actually pay for this service! Seriously. One of the few contents online I would subscribe to.... Just a tip:-) JJ
Entertaining and lets u know whats going on in the soccer/football world with good opinions Great for americans who dont get any of this analysis normally!
With the lone exceptions of the occasional duet of More than Words, this is the best soccer (yeah I am an American and overly proud too) pod around. Great cast, good humor, wide range of opinions and insight. Jimbo, Barry, Ingel, Wilson, Sid and Amy are great...Rafael might make the list if not for obsession with Extreme. As Jamie R put it, "this podcasht is literally the beat thing to happen to football since Frank Lampard". Enough said really?
Perfect for an EPL fan stuck in the US. James is like an intelligent and funny version of Adrian Durham.
I wish there was a football podcast like this without a manchester united bias. I love the guardian but for two things first: "Henry back for Arsenal, is this desperation?" versus "Scholes back for Man UTD: an act of a master tactician" second: football is a competitive sport not ballet dancing, the winner is the team that scores the most goals, there is no "deserve"
One word, Superb!
Favorite podcast ever.
Hands down the best football podcast. All the people asking for longer/more frequent/"better" analysis need to realize that everyone except James Richardson is a correspondent for the guardian, and so have other work related things to do, and James Richardson himself is a TV presenter. The fact that it's free means that there's only a certain amount of man hours the Guardian can allot to it, and if they asked people to pay for a better product this review section would e filled with whiny complaints. The show is filled spot on analysis, incredible humor, a rotating cast of engaging and interesting speakers, and always leaves wanting more and waiting for the next one, the gold standard.
Well I'm kidding.
And still look forward to it each week and miss it when seasons end. Grantland's Men in Blazers great, too, but Football Weekly really stands alone.
Refreshing look at the wild and crazy world of football. Comes complete with a healthy dose of sarcasm, non sequitur ramblings, and brutal honesty.
Ab Fab. Fantastic pod.
I absolutely love this podcast. If u listen to any other football pundits in england, they are certainly snobby regarding team England and constantly belittles continental football. They are the anti sundAy supplement, which brings an honest and humerus look to football in England and abroad. AC jimbo may not be a comedian by occupation but you won't meet a more naturally funny person than him. His jokes and puns are second to none. The rest of the crew are very funny and insightful as well. Barry glenndening, Sid Lowe, Sean Ingle and Jonnathan Wilson among many other top journalists. I am absolutely love it!
...really like Arsenal.
FW is definitely the best pod for football, anni especially like Sid Lowe's La Liga updates, but it seems like The guys have trouble fitting in all the topics amd sometimes glance over alot of games. this should definitely be an hour or more long podcast.
Smart, funny, insightful and entraining! One of the best podcasts period!
My favorite podcast.
Smart and funny. Easily the best football/soccer podcast around.
Entertaining to say the least
No homo ;)
Not much more to say; great mix of humor, insight, knowledge and Barry. More Bundesliga, less Italy and it would be perfection, but nothings perfect.
But where are the MLS updates? I kid, never go there.
The only negative thing I have to say about this smart podcast is that I was very disappointed to find out that Barry Glendenning was not a distinguished black man. His voice fooled me!
Jimbo is the best host on earth - when he was on vacation skiing, the show sucked. Sid Lowe for President! He's all-knowing and unstoppable once he's on the roll. Glendenning is not a football fan and is quite depressingly inarticulate on the show - should probably stick with writing newspaper columns. Can we get more episodes of the Pod each week, i.e, daily, during the season?
Best footie podcast.
Great football pod! Can't ask for anything more.
Very well made, informative and entertaining. If you follow EPL, La Liga, Seire A and/or the ECL you MUST subscribe. Highly recomended
I listen to this from the US and fund it is a great way to keep up with the football news and opinion. How about some lower league updates?
I'd give them 5 if they'd show up for work today.
As a Brit abroad I rely heavily on this podcast to keep me up to date with the ins and outs of football back home. The domestic and European round ups are superb, while the cast are all likeable fellows. Good stuff.
Fun, insightful, hilarious. This is conversation the way it ought to be. They do serious analysis, and have a nice balance of panelists who can talk about formations, finances, etc. But they also always seem to simply be having a good time. I would pay some decent money - that it comes for free twice a week is almost a miracle. Richardson is a fantastic host. Raphael Honigstein, Jonathan Wilson, and Sid Lowe are my favorite contributers, though I also love John Ashdown, Paul Doyle, and have really enjoyed it when they've brought on Michael Cox (zonalmarking). Glendenning is mostly a good contributer, but he is incredibly predictable when talking about individual matches. 90% of them were miserable and dull. And 90% of teams are awful. It makes it sound like he just doesn't actually like the sport very much.
This best show I lesting too in my taxi cab:)
But it would be better still if they could get some actual people in the game on the show once in a while.
Today, James and crew decided to bash the SPL for considering a 10 team league. I guess downsizing in a shrinking economy is nonsense idea to them. Fans of the SPL, please apologize to the pod. They really don't want to realize the levity of the financial crisis.
I started listening to Jimbo and the boys during their World Cup coverage, and I've continued into this fall. They're always opinionated, informed, and most importantly, hilarious. Even if you don't follow European football closely, this podcast us excellent.
The best soccer podcast there is, period. Excellent perspectives on all the major European leagues and South America from knowledgeable correspondents. Great insights every week, very funny and constantly challenging the conventional wisdom.
This is simply the most stimulating, entertaining and knowledeable football podcast! Period. Ahmed chowdhry @ Pakistan
These guys are witty, smart, and silly and it's perfect entertainment for my 30 minute commute.
Replaced Adam carolla podcast for my go-to podcast.
The best football (soccer) podcast. A perfect balance of insight, opinion, wit, and style. I can't get enough of Jimbo, Barry, Sid and the rest of the gang.
Excellent and fun discussions; I particularly enjoy hearing the podcast the day after the game. Although many of the predictions about the results are wrong (which makes it more fun) the analysis is interesting and fun
Absolutely brilliant. So fantastic that I'm honestly worried that they're not making enough money. Would pay big money to listen to James and co. day in and out.
The only football podcast that matters. Subscribe now.
I do enjoy this pod. Thanks guys.
My friend Hueso turned My friend Aly and I on to this show and it's great. Aly has bacon aidz and won't live much longer so this show really keeps him going. Barry needs his own show.
Barry is right, England are week. Green even. Go USA...
This is just perfect, fun, interesting and informative! Make them longer please! As an ex-pat I have no chance to hear any life radio rge. football, so the podcasts are saving us..... Keep up the good job! Wbr Peter
bring on the second helping
One Word - brilliant
This is my 1st review of anything ever! It only goes to show how much I love football weekly. I've always had the oppurtunity to write reviews but most products aren't worth the time, Football weekly is an exception. I like the unbiased analysis of matches played over the week and the liberal injection of witty humour plus it's free. Great job guys!!!
I'm a europen born American and a true long time fan of the epl and other European leagues. I must say there is nothing other than the matches them self I look forward to more than this pod. I love Barry. The rest of the crue is equaly as enjoyable. Get it now.
Need I say more?
This used to be a good and enjoyable podcast. I've persevered for the last year but no more. There's not enough football, too much tangential ribbing and references and too often many premiership games are almost completely ignored. I think Barry's funny, and like Sean, Rafael, Fernando and Kevin's analyses but the rest I'll give a miss. Especially our MC who is painfully overeager to talk about italy even if he drowns out Paolo. Over the last year I started listening to thegame and it's won me over. It's the podcast I really look forward to each week.
I have not listened to any other football podcast and frankly why would I. This is entertaining, informative and addictive. I haven't missed one in the year since I discovered it. It carries some of the irreverance of the Guardian's tea timely e-mail the "Fiver" onto the airwaves, I love it!
Always entertaining and great coverage of European football with emphasis on English, and Spanish leagues. There's also an eye on Italian, German and all current tournaments from the country that started it all.
The best football podcast - keeps us Americans sane and far away from the espn soccer for dummies speak - if u get the game then this is for you. Lots the callins from Spain - go USA - worldcup is ours
I listen to every show, it is indeed funny- honneckstein's recenr story of legman had me in stitches- but lacks the depth of analysis that people like marcotti and barclay provide at The Game. I seem to be in a very lonely minority here, but I find Barry exceptionally full of himself and very irritating. It's as if he has a secret over the rest of us, and his analysis and predictions are, using Sid's favorite term, rubbish. His extraordinary humor is totally lost on me. Keep folks like Honneckstein and Sid and let Barry just do the minute by minute until he has something valuable to contribute.
no other sports podcast comes close to the sheer brilliance and dry humor of Barry Glendenning!
This is a quality podcast about all things football. I enjoy the banter and the insightful dialogue. Well done mentioning the round-headed manc Karl Pilkington who's got a head like a f*c*ing orange.keep up the good work.
How many one word phrases can I assemble to laud this podcast? Let's not find out. This is a truly wonderful podcast. I never miss it. I honestly wish it were twice as often. I sometimes find myself stopping halfway through on Tuesday morning on the way to work, lest I run out of new Football Weekly material before my next dose arrives on Thursday. That is not an exaggeration. Subscribe immediately. If not sooner.
I have been reading James Richardson in Guardian for a long time.. Thanks for putting this together.. Good team , insightful and witty
best personalities in footy podcasting
In a word, brilliant. Used to love James Richardson's musings when he covered Italian football for Channel 4. But these pods are even better! First thing I download when they are available. The whole crew are brilliant. Barry, Sid, James. Can't recommend it enough.
Richardson and his cohorts offer in-depth and hilarious insights to the world of the Premiership, Serie A, and La Liga. They also have lively discussions about the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. Brilliant podcast!
