I am looking for a world news pod cast. This podcast does share a lot of news around the world but the reposters are very bias.
They mention the subject once, then refer to it, they, the govt, here, etc. You can’t listen casually, or have to rewind to know what they are reporting on. But it is hard to find more honest news.
This podcast is amazing! Really good source of unbiased news.
I have been looking for an unbiased news source for so long and this has been perfect! BBC news has been named in several articles one of the most unbiased news reports and it really shows. They do a great job.
Listen to this to be well informed on significant events throughout the world.
The incomplete and biased coverage of US politics make me question the quality of your global reporting. Losing credibility
Badgering and rude to guest on both sides of a story. The main male host is such a snob. I do like the coverage based outside USA but has that British tabloid feel sometimes.
Over multiple decades I have seen BBC morph from a fair and balanced news channel to a left leaning, pro-Islamic news channel. I used to love listening to the BBC but find their pro Islamic tilt distasteful. I cannot subscribe to BBC until they cease Muslim appeasement.
Why is she reading the news? What is stuck in her throat? For the love of god, will you Valerie Sanders clear your throat? I CANNOT STAND IT!!!
I’d love to give 5 stars but I can’t until they start covering the potential for our countries first female president. Kanye west got coverage but a legitimate female candidate gets absolutely zero coverage. Please help us address this media bias in the US.
The number of times this podcast has featured two men talking to each other about women’s bodies is outrageous. If they cannot find women experts, surely they can afford to hire women presenters. Whether it is about women’s sport or women’s health, I’m sick and tired of women being excluded from conversations about women. Perhaps the BBC should consider whether it wants women as listeners.
Excellent content from the BBC as usual, but the sound mixing is terrible. Whenever the podcast cuts to a correspondent in the field, you have to turn the volume up to understand.
Hic est Bonus et Probus, sed id sinister annitens est.
As an American sick and tired of US-centric news, I listen to BBC for broader, international coverage. I intensely dislike hearing an American accent hosting the program!! Why do this to the world? In the age of trump and Covid, the world doesn’t need to be reminded of the US.
Great podcast. I especially love it with the witty banter of Jackie Leonard; who I happen to think is also a hottie. lol
Great way to get a quick update on world news. Bonus if you get Emilio San Pedro! Love hearing that guy. Ignore the trolls who claim this podcast has any clear bias, they are just projecting their own prejudices where there is none. I’ve been listening to this podcast for years and they cover all topics quite neutrally.
This podcast bills itself out as unbiased, unfortunately this isn’t true. This podcast very much leans to the left.
He said it so beautifully
Whatever happens in the world conveyed to public briefly but reliable.
Five minutes of news in 30 minutes with oversimplified and sometimes misleading science reports, much speculation, and “analysis” (telling us how they want us to interpret what we hear). Almost not worth the time.
Man. Even other countries have an agenda for the US. Very biased.
This podcast makes my drive into work bearable in the Los Angeles traffic. Great reporting, ride range of topics and well presented.
I’m listening again to the riot podcasts. I can’t find any that say left wing or the right wing were peacefully protesting or rioting. I heard the president blaming the right antifa and the city’s councilor saying he saw white suprematism posting and signs. Both sides are muting the actual protest of the killing of Mr Floyd
What used to be my go to for real news just based on facts has become an agenda pushing puppet.
I have listened to the BBC since my teen years. The only source I would go for engaging, worldly, deep and unbiased reporting. BBC Documentaries is another must as well!
Listening for a decade plus, and love the no nonsense, investigative, on the ground reporting. This is something the US media should aspire to become more like. I could drop all my other podcasts and be happy with only this one. Keep it up and thank you for your hard work!
Your news and commentary are precious for US readers. Being gaslighted by interests that are tending ever more toward the brutal extremism and fascism that Timothy Snyder warned of 4 years ago, we are sorely under-informed about ourselves and the world. Please redouble your efforts! Can you also translate balancing perspectives and news from non-English language sources? Thank you very much.
I remember a time when your reporting wa more objective and more informative. Now it is at least half political finger pointing and the reporting has gradually become much less informed.
Great stories and interesting perspectives on global events.
So 13 people died in a southern city in Yemen and it’s a “surge” of Corona virus deaths? Come on guys, that’s nonsense. Plus, it’s a big planet and there is so much more going on. I used to love BBC but you guys are becoming so sensational, it seems maybe you’re concerned with advertising revenue so you hope to get people tuning in out of fear and worry. Why not report on heart disease or cancer or scientific developments, environmental destruction, or give news about groups that are working to do good in the world? Two stars because you aren’t as churlish and divisive as other news outlets which are dividing our societies with their pride. May The Lord God bless your hearts and hands to do good work and to hate what is not good. Amen.
My dad has
While I appreciate hearing stories from around the world, there is a definite underlying bias to the left that needs to be acknowledged. Every news agency discriminates simply by having to choose what stories it will (or won’t) report on but the BBC goes beyond this by editorializing their reporting and value signaling. Examples of this can be seen in the way they report on climate change, the sexual revolution and US politics.
Dennis, you're great but now I know about Aaron Berg. Thanks for letting him take the grasshopper from your hand.
I have been listening for over a year and i find the stories unique and interesting and always inquisitive past the obvious. Well worth the time.
The WHO blatantly and shamelessly denies their being at least a victim of the Chinese propaganda machine. The title of “global pandemic” was delayed for weeks, even though many, many countries were experiencing an extreme ramping up of cases, deaths, lack of testing, treatment, and knowledge, all based upon waiting on the WHO to “OFFICIALLY” declare a global pandemic. The gentleman of WHO that reported from China was blindsided, and fed a load of typical propaganda (seemingly enjoying the meal). Did he not know that they only tell one what the State releases, after extreme vetting and usually silencing the truth? Any tourist from a “free country” recognizes the obvious propaganda, and presentation of only a strict state point of view. Why would anyone trust that nation? An unfortunate reality, but the WHO is without a doubt “China centric”, likely in an attempt to be politically correct, and “inclusive” to all, but at the risk of avoiding honesty. What on earth is wrong with TRUTH? A difficult thing for a retired Physician to have to say. Certainly we wish it were not so, but it is. Need we painfully learn again 10 times over before it is too late (If not already so). Trust must be earned. (It certainly doesn’t come from theft of intellectual property.) Truth cannot be substantiated by a “scolding” from the individual who is “walking the party line” without any recognition of the cult of which they are victims. It is a very sad time, and not just because of the virus itself. Nobody excepting the central government insiders really had a chance to know. Thanks. I only wish that “outsiders” could know enough to “speak the truth in love”. Good health and Blessings to all in EVERY country!
Very biased as usual when it’s comes to U.S politics but I I mainly listen for the news story’s in other parts of the world
The best WORLD news there is. I listen to both broadcasts every night. Amazing!!
How awful that the CDCsays its ok to assume they died from Covis19.duh so all other deaths are down ..liars when will you report that ? Liars, fear mongers ..shame on you
You need to talk about something else
Seems to have forgotten that China is the cause of the current pandemic and not just the first country affected.
I love BBC because I get to hear news from across the world and also a TRUTHFUL newscast about the failings of that buffoon in the White House. Not the boot-licking of Fox News. Thank you highlighting his MANY failings, especially his non-action during the pandemic.
In fact 45 did deny it at first, he even claimed it was a hoax by the democrats! 45 now at least accepts it and is working towards solution. A pro-active global approach influenced by the WHO would be better than a nationalistic.
The couple didn’t take the anti-malaria drug. They took aquarium cleaner!! Get the story right
Great impartial content as relevant here in California as anywhere else.
Totally one sided leftist garbage.
Simply the best most respected news program on the planet . Never miss an episode. Boston MA
They really go far to be unbiased by allowing some really dishonest Trump administration officials to come on and spew right wing propaganda but they usually have someone else on with more truthful analysis to balance it out. It’s up to the viewer to know the difference but unfortunately the Trump cult blindly believes their leader and his cronies.
Great impartial podcast providing a brief outlook of world headlines. Disregard the comments from the Trumpers. They can’t read, let alone listen. Would love to see where they think Britain is located on a map. I digress, great podcast for world headlines. 5 stars.
Like really horrible. Did the station directors kid do this? Because I can fathom any other reason for it. For shame.
The content in these podcasts is good, current, and shows sides to issues not seen on other media outlets. However, they seem to go off on tangents, going on and on about things hardly related. Yes it does circle back around, but I’d like these better if there were more podcasts that were focused on one or two stories as opposed to few that cover 7 stories at a time.
Quality reporting in selection and structure of the stories that make in to this twice a day half hour pod. It has been a part of my life for years and provides a higher level of the days news than the rest of the media landscape. You deserve better and it is here!
Just like any news source it is extremely biased. Passes personal beliefs as facts. I skip many segments because I feel personal persecuted.
Listen BBC over NPR and US domestic news sources. Brits have a larger view of the world and better reporters.
A powerful balance of the hot topics in each day, with a measure of interesting, non-obvious news from underreported places. Smart, and appropriately paced, this podcast is a must have for anyone who is willing to listen and learn about today’s world.
I’ve been listening to this podcast for almost five years and it’s one of my main news sources. I wanted a source in English with the lowest possible bias in the presentation. Now I can also hear put the personalities of the podcasters/journalists and that makes it more fun to listen. I also enjoy the inclusion of the listeners from time to time which make this podcast personal and charming. Well done!
Love bbc, love the whole country, Hope to move there someday. The U.S is trash under trump. Nice to see some truth from outside country news outlet
A good, longer-format news show that incorporates the odd lifestyle/humanity story for a lighter approach to (usually) daily reports. The end of the year recap of 2017 was nice and finished with a segment that made me lauch out loud.
Please bring back Dan and the daily update! The Global podcast is too narrow already and fails to mention the broader events of the day. In-depth reporting is OK but in another BBC podcast please!
The unbiased level is wrong is point of view. Most American leave a shelter lives and do not appreciate and hold dearly the freedoms that America give them. Having a free opinion is not bias is choosing what to believe and follow. There a few countries in the world that you get arrested and jail for speaking your mind and against injustices.
I appreciate the quality worldwide reporting of the BBC, but find their need to insert an all too lengthy, random fluff piece into each episode annoying. I regular end up skipping over the last half of the podcast.
Of all the podcasts I listen to this is the only one that I must turn the volume ALL the way up. But being in the USA I still listen twice a day to get some international perspective.
Love this news channel! I love how they try to stay neutral, keep me informed on more than just the couple biggest stories, take the opposing side in every interview, and always end on a more uplifting story. My favorite people who tell the news are Jackie Leonard and Ben Bland because they always come up with a little joke about the final story.
It’s hard to get real news in America, especially world news. Here, we get celebrity gossip, news about our nearest city, and that is pretty much it. I turn to BBC world news to find out not only what goes on in the world but in my own country. Thanks BBC.
Love it, least biased I can find
I’ve been listening to the BBC world news podcast for about 4 years now on my commute to work. I’ve always been frustrated by my local and national (US) media coverage. I love that with this podcast I get 30 minutes of straight to the point reporting on major global events in understandable terms without dummying down the story, sensationalizing or politicizing it. That’s what I like from journalists and I enjoy that this podcast keeps me current without annoying me with a left or right agenda. This one is a keeper!! And until next time, goodbye.
I listen to this podcast on a daily basis. It starts in the shower, is paused for breakfast and walk to school with the children. Its resumed on the bike ride to the coffee shop and promptly ends prior to heading into the office! What better way to start the day!
As a minority in America, I am frustrated with the ignorance at which BBC reports regarding our president. In the latest podcast about the protests of NFL players against the national anthem and the American flag was wrongly reported. The issue that these players have is with police brutality. They are wrong with taking it out on our flag and our anthem. It was reported that the NFL players are protesting our presidents policies. They may have been protesting his statements Sunday, but there are no policies in place that our president is responsible for that they are protesting. Get it straight. Your fired!!!
If local news in the US is your main source of information then you will be woefully lacking in perspective on world affairs. This podcast rights the US-centric wrongs of American broadcasters. The updates are perfectly timed and never feel like too much or too little. Also, Jackie Leonard is my homie.
Consistent, well-put together source of global news.
Subscribe and listen to this podcast if you're looking for unbiased reporting. The reporters listen closely to the tones and implications of their sources and ask relevant follow up questions. I enjoy the short but compact reporting on news from around the world.
Love this podcast it gives a balanced view on things happening around the world. I especially enjoy the humor the commentators give towards the end. Can't go a day without listening.
Yea its better than any US news service, but BBC Global News is also filled with absurd and oft exaggerated world views especially with regards to third world countries; the reporters dont have a grasp of reality as usual, and tend to misreport the news or exagerrate the effects of it. Its very easy to tell that these are "western" reporters with a naieve, sometimes stupid notion of the world around them. Kinda disappointing that BBC News is almost as false as usual US news.
I listen to this religiously, however, don't care for the news stories about the poor kid from third world country that has an excellent talent.
This is the best news podcast out there. Lots of stories that you would otherwise never hear about in the states.
Particularly a big fan of Oliver Conway and Jackie Leonard.
Superb international news
I use this podcast to keep up on current events. It's always a joy to listen to because they have so much character.
I really value this podcast for the insight it provides on international issues. As an American who has lived abroad, US news agencies have little to offer in that regard. But the overtly leftist views are impossible to ignore, and the frankly subhuman views they seem to have of the disenfranchised are unsettling. I know as a citizen of the US that they go to the least educated to get opinions of current events that they then broadcast to the world as "all of America", when they've targeted those whose opinions least resemble theirs and who they can then cast in the most unfavorable light. The intent seems to be: "Anyone who doesn't think exactly as we do is an idiot. And we'll prove it at any cost." I can't rule out bias, then, when it comes to their reporting in other countries. There's a very clear agenda, sadly. I think we live in an age where apolitical reporting no longer exists.
CNN with a British accent.
First, it covers British news not world news. I was okay with this because it's interesting but today when I listened to their report about how young people love Jeremy Corbyn I realized that they're not journalists. During the report they talked about how all these young people loved his speech and were cheering for it. Then they found one person who was young and against Socialism and interviewed him on his ideas. They didn't counter it by interviewing someone intelligent about their ideas on why they support Corbyn. And then I realized that they normally don't find the counter debate when discussing politics. Rather, they'll freely attack the politician without giving anyone reason to support them or discussing why people do support them in a way that isn't saying "because they're stupid and young and they don't understand market systems". Try talking to the other side to see what they think instead of making assumptions that they're stupid. Do journalism! Journalism is objective! Do objective journalism, do your job!
Really dismayed at the days and days spent on the Manchester bombing story, and not a single mention of the bombings in Iraq that have killed twice as many. But those people aren't westerners, so their lives are less important. Why cover it? BBC isn't the only network doing this, but I expect more out of them because their coverage is usually so well balanced. Really disturbing the racism in disguise.
The BBC Global News Podcast delivers on its promise of the best news, interviews, and stories from around the world. The World Service staff (reporters and presenters, along with the editors, producers, and the rest of the behind-the-scenes team) represents the gold standard for quality, in-depth, and responsible journalism. I greatly appreciate the variety of stories and the depth of coverage. This is my absolute favorite news source - I couldn't live without it!
A news podcast focusing on global news is a great idea. Unfortunately the overwhelming political bias of the BBC ruins it. Anybody who listens will know within a few episodes exactly what the beeb's stance is on various issues and politicians. So much for objectivity or any idea of informing rather than indoctrinating the audience.
As an American, fed a steady diet of American-based news media, it can often seem NOTHING happens in the rest of the world. After all, nothing from the rest of the world gets reported, so how could there be anything more? Well, if for some odd reason you, like me, prefer to know what goes on beyond our borders, this is an excellent source of twice (temporarily thrice) daily global news. A complication of reporting compiled into a summary, presented by one of several ace BBC newscasters, their stories are insightful, concise and timely. I also appreciate the variety in subsequent daily versions. Don't expect the "afternoon" version to be a copy/edit/paste of the "morning" show. My one complaint: they tend to end the show on a light note, with a story that is more obscure, perhaps less relevant to our daily lives, but that - I suspect - they hope leaves you feeling uplifted and possessing of some new, interesting insight. I skip this. It tends to be a bit too fluffy, obscure, or just downright unnecessary. I'm sorry, please remember, I'm American, I can tolerate only so much of that. If you are looking for global news (even if you aren't, try it and realize how much you've been missing), subscribe for a week and you'll be hooked.
Great and convenient way to get global news. It's refreshing to listen to something truly bi-partisan that's just about the facts, thanks BBC!
Always start my day with the BBC
Fits into my day perfectly. Never behind on the news! Thanks BBC :)
Love the extra daily podcast! Please keep it coming!
Keep it going. Perfect for the daily commute.
My favored source for daily global news. Typically BBC - high quality and relatively impartial. Being in the US I hope the new extra 10am GMT edition will be continued. It gives me a first - thing - in - the - morning news cast
Love the frequent updates and reporting on stories outside the US
Does exactly what it aims to do, which is bring quality, varied global news. Great variety of culture, politics, and science. Only downside is that this podcast is constantly being dropped so I have to download again. Not sure if BBC or Apple?
I listen to BBC every morning when I get up and am very excited about the additional podcast that they are trying out this week. The more, the better. Goodness knows, we need good journalism nowadays in the age of alternative facts. Keep ‘em coming, BBC!
Been listening for years. Love the quality of the news.
I really like the additional BBC World News podcast the past couple of days. The important news with just the facts is presented in about 30 minutes without commercials!!!! Too bad for the other news services. BBC does it right! Thank you.
A podcast that covers stories from all over the world and not just from America,England but everywhere. While the BBC is known to be unbiased in the news there is still bias but just not as heavily shown like Fox or CNN. This allows me to get in my opinion a more accurate account of the story instead of a one sided account of the story. I would recommend this to any friend trying to get a news from all over the world in a fast and precise manner.
Best news source. I also enjoy the short reports at the end which can be very informative and humorous.
Awesome podcast. Beats CNN, Fox, or MSNBC any day.
Best news podcast
Very unbiased and a good way to stay up to date on what's going on in the world.
Our piece of the pie lays here, she looks for peace and finds war. She doesn't ask the tough questions, she asks the obvious ones that need to be answered. Keep up the great work! I love this show.
I have been listening tus podcast from one year ago. I live in Colombia and tus give a great global vision
Best news podcast out there!!
Helps understanding of events, from a slightly different, likely somewhat more balanced point of view than the US press
For a hardcore news cycle junkie this is home, my favorite show.
Love it. Concise and informative. I listen in almost every day.
...but the sound levels are kind of low while listening through car speakers on the highway.
The focus on world issues is refreshing, but they have more feature stories than actual news reports. This is particularly frustrating because they only have about 4 stories per podcast and sometimes focus on one story for an entire week, even if nothing new is actually happening. They also can lean heavily on interviews with people affected by the event, rather than actual facts. If you want a broad knowledge of world issues, this is your podcast. If you want to know what actually happened in the world today, go somewhere else. This is not what I was looking for.
I really have enjoyed this podcast. It presents a different point of view that I can not get in the USA. Thank you.
Gives you important world news from a different perspective than the American media. Great way to stay on top of world events.
Hands down the best source of news in the world. Also the only one I have found that can be completely impartial and objective.
Simply the best source of international news out there!
I love learning about the major (and occasionally minor) events taking place in the world while commuting. This podcast is produced very well and is a quality source of information.
Finally a way to get news vs. the "infotainment" you get from the regular and cable news stations!
I love this podcast it's the best way to get international news on the go I listen to it everyday and it drives me crazy on the weekends without it. this has informed me on lots of topics and help me understand the world anyone who wants to be informed should get this podcast
Where i live everything is censored , this podcast is a great source for me to have latest news in my packet , so litsening in my free time at work or cummuting
Living in the US it can be a struggle to get truly global news coverage. This podcast is my lifeline!
Sometimes posts in time for morning commute. Sometimes not. Production is all over the board. Hard to be all things to all people. The one guarantee is the breadth of the coverage.
Coverage of the most important stories by reporters who ask good questions. Great daily news source for a summary.
Wow, this is awesome!! Good for me to study English.
-- high quality news!
I listen to it everyday!!
Excellent. Local news is really bad in that world news is lacking. I can get it here. Very professional, informative, well constructed news format.
A wonderfully informative an beautifully produced news program.
Fits perfect with my morning commute.
Where is the news?
I swear this is the best way to get real world news. I download every day!
Great to be able to get honest and accurate news. Thank you.
Great news podcast. Love it!!!
wonderfully informative and original reporting. thank you for this podcast
Where are the shows for today?
My #1 favorite podcast. Just wish there was more updates over the weekend.
I love the podcast but lately they haven't been putting it up as early as they used to! I used to download it before my commute every morning, please put it back on iTunes as early as you used to!
The reporters have a condescending attitude towards developing countries.
today's presenter (Sep10), Fiona something, has an irritating singsong voice that sounds like it belongs on Jackanory. Had to stop it halfway through
Like that it is concise and varied at the same time. Best news broadcast on iTunes, just wish there were more than 1 per day and on weekends.
I really like it！
I love these podcasts..I like hearing unbiased opinions when listening to the news..
I love the non USA-centric perspective. It's a nice change of pace from all of the overzealous proAm BS that I am so sick of hearing. Good stuff
Can't think of any better news sourcebif you're looking for undistorted facts and expert opinions.
News that isn't 97% about the US!! This gives equal coverage to news around the world and focuses on what's actually important. If you don't want to be an ignorant, ugly American, I would highly recommend downloading it.
Great, clear, prompt and to the point. Interesting news from around the world.
Keep up the goodwork mann!!! i love the "on spot" or "on sight" reporting u guys do.... REAL news about the Wrold.... "The WORLD CRAIG!" keep doin what u guys r doin!!! WorldWideWestSide!!!
끝내줘요!! It's awesome. I study Teps with this.
I love this podcast. It helps me get a small glimpse of what's going on in this world.
A great source of news!
This is good for me. I'm learning english. so if you want to know about global news. you need this podcast
Always good for we english learners
Gr8 podcast! Provide such a detailed info
This program have been providing an exceptional scope of global events. We should be aware of what is going on in today's societies beyond our backyards. This podcast gives another opportunity toward understanding the urgent times we live in.
Great podcast !!!!
World class, colourful news programme that beautifully reflects the state of current global events, trends and developments around the world.
i love these podcasts! they are up to date. they give very good news. i would recomend this to anyone. even people my age and i am under 12. this is awsome.
My title says it all. The best world news source in the world.
If you're in the US and need a global scope that the bias local media can't provide then let me welcome you to the best news program on the planet. First, the English accents are so polite and polished that me ears feel cleaner with every listen. Also, there aren't any advertisements or commercials in the entire podcast. And, of course, the news is explicitly detailed, the content is very diverse, and the value is priceless.
25 minutes long, several times a day, it will fill your catcher up fast, but if you want to stay abreast of international news, there is no better podcast out there. Usually covering only three or four stories, you can easily fast forward through the ones that don't interest you. British reporters have no problem actually reporting on occurrences off their island, and no difficulty asking politicians the hard questions and expecting non-evasive answers. Who knew?
Sadly as a US citizen I do have to say our news no longer captures the real story. Before CNN the news had value in the states now we fail to express the honest reporting that this news captures. There is no complex emotional synthesis of a show, the real truth from what is know from facts not puffed up delutions to trap an audiance. News Santa
Puts American news coverage to shame, covers real news, not crummy urban tales
Best source of unbiased news. Love the rough interviews
Best so far keep up the good work
Simply put...gold standard of international news
This podcast is really good if you want news on the go.
Great stories. Great reporting. Compared to other sources of news not so bias either.
I'm an American living in China and always enjoy listening to Global News. The stories always cover a wide range of topics and gives a very global perspective. Since I am without cable news and internet news sites are sometimes tricky to navigate within a communist country, Global News is a great source for stories! Journalists do an excellent interviews and tell the stories with a lot of passion. Keep it up!
The only news i really trust.
Good mix of top news stories and more unusual human interest stories. Makes my 30 min commute to work enjoyable.
I love this podcast!!!! and what's even better? I'm on it today!!! YAHOO!!!
Been listening for six months and I love it. Best podcast on iTunes. To all the people claiming anti-American bias, welcome to real reporting outside the clownish pathetic right-wing media bubble we suffer from in the U.S. If you think this is leftist news, that really shows how far right 'mercans are.
Great news stories that aren't reported in US media. The sometimes anti-American slant and always left leaning reporting can get annoying.
I listen to every broadcast. Very informative with a good balanced of news stories. I have noticed that English reporters are a little on the hardnosed side. In America it would come off as rude at times. I bet it is just good reporting by the UK's standards.
One of the best podcasts out there; I listen to it every morning for international news that doesn't get reported here in the US.
This is a great news source and you get a lot of the latest news, and definately the most important in the world. Many events are covered similarly to a news report on tv minus the visual. However, on some topics, bias is appearant, and casual discussion on some points show this even more, highlighting British perspective on things. And that is expected, however as a global news source I do not fully appreciate that. Apart from some bias (not a lot), insignificant news mixed in with important news (thus making the podcast unecissarily longer-it is already long), and lack of complete global/third person perspective, this is a great podcast and a reliable news source.
Being an American who occasionally likes to be up on current events, I find it very frustrating to watch/listen to American news (ABC, CNN, MSNBC, etc.) that seems to spend the majority of its time talking about American issues. BBC Global News opened my eyes, three years ago, to a much larger world, where American news still existed, but was not the egocentric portion of the information. Very refreshing to hear the facts not spun to support one political side or another, of what is happening in the world.
I need to keep up with international events as part of my job, and this podcast is a great way to do so. I like the spread of topics and find them nearly always educational, insightful, and/or entertaining. Sometimes they provide better coverage of US events than US newsgroups do!
U.S. news, no matter what side they take on an issue, all sounds depressingly similar. It's good to find an 'outside' perspective on world affairs - one that isn't so centered on America. It allows us a chance to look into the U.S. from a perspective that is less influenced by American politics and culture. That, and it doesn't try to invoke unholy fear into its' listeners. I'd say it's my main source for news.
The good: A blend of reports that broaden's one's outlook. The bad: Much of the reporting is done in a semi-comatose style that could only stimulate the Prairie Home Companion crowd. I realize that effective journalism need not be sensational, but it would be nice to hear a bit more life coming from some of these reporters.
Like the show for the news. It would be nice if you would keep your anti American and leftist slant out of it. If you have an agenda fine. But if your going to interview some citizen in Iraq who is anti American for their slant fine. Then interview someone who is pro American. And don't say there isn't any because I know better than that.
I am someone who quickly gets tired of the stories that pass for news on the major US networks and new-stations. The BBC is refreshing for the world-wide perpsective that it has (and the lack of pop-star updates). You get decent coverage of events in Africa and Asia in addition to very good coverage of US and European political, economic and social news. The twice-daily, half-hour lenght is a good duration and gives me the feeling like I have a good understanding of what is going on for news.
i love hearing BBC news, but unfortunately could never hear the oldest jokes section because of poor volume. please continute the great work
A familiar voice in an unfamiliar world.
I find BBC world service news very pointed and informatory. You can't find a less biased news cast with world coverage.
Honestly, this was the first week that I've been tuning in on BBC Global News...and I liked it already. News like these should be broadcasted in the US. I was a former citizen of the Philippines, and BBC was broadcasted that far from the UK. The only thing that sets me back is that they don't have podcasts during the weekend...
I was frustrated listening to the other BBC podcast, Newspod. About 1/4 of the stories on that Podcast were pertaining to the UK. Not complaining, since it is a UK based company, just frustrating to listen to stories about parking tickets in London (yadi yada), with no easy way to skip to the next story. The 'Global News' podcast is far more interesting for world news, though the other BBC podcast, Newspod, sounds a bit more polished in production. I have to disagree with other people's comments that the BBC is 'unbiased' in reporting. The BBC does a great job of journalism, but there are definitely subtle opinions shining through. I consider myself a liberal, and the BBC definitely has a liberal slant to news presentation. The easiest way to pick up on the 'editorial' is to just analyze the 'average' so called expert interviewed to augment stories. Usually that experts opinion is the editorial, 'bias' subtly shinning through. Just watch Fox News for an hour to understand what I'm talking about. I find the BBC to in line with typical NPR type of news. I listen to many podcasts on news and read newspapers as well. I find this podcast to be a bit lacking in news presentation from the perspective of markets and business, but has strengths in world politics and humanistic stories of life in the emerging economies/developing world; simply put more of a news source in line with the NY Times and not the Wall Street Journal.
The show dated 7 March 08 has an interview with a Malaysian Indian woman. Her English is almost impossible to understand. This just wastes the listeners time. Interviews are fine as a way to impart the news, but there has to be some kind of standard of speech and clarity. This happens not only on the BBC, but on NPR too.
I'm no expert on podcasts or anything, but this is the best one that I know of. It's addictive. NPR is the only other place you might find something with as much scope or access, but this one is way less biased than anything over there (politically and geographically). I bet if everybody listened to Global News once a day, the world would be a better place.
If there is a news service that tries harder to present a balanced world view, I would like to listen to it. After months of listening to the Global News podcasts, I am deeply impressed by the BBC's attempts to present as many points of view as possible, even though I agree that it is impossible to avoid bias altogether. I like the less "serious" items; I have learned a great deal from them. The sound quality of the podcast is variable, because they are often reporting from the field, but it's worth it to hear from the people involved in events rather than just a presenter.
Excellent journalism from the BBC, but a surpring amount of light fluff pieces are included in this 20-25 minute daily summary.
Besides the many ad-driven podcast around, The BBC World Service is podcast series is absolutely manifestation of the promise of real journalism, emotionally connecting with the listener. BEST OF CLASS. The others are just pedestrian. I am very pleased when synchronizing with my trusty iPhone and hitting the road to work, hearing a world class news from this out of home service on the UK. I only wish the “Media” was not so controlled. Cheers
I really do like the BBC when regarding news, because they don't skew it as much as they do here in America. In fact, some of the news broadcasts here are just silly. I'm always on the go, so to have it on my iPod is simply pheonomenal.
We don't get news like this in Dubya's "uh-muh-rika". The BBC focuses on relevancy to the global stage and facts. Everything in the U.S. is either glossy, ad-plastered entertainment or idealogical rhetoric filled to disgusting levels with emotion and personal issues. "The Global News" podcast is what news should be and sadly what it rarely is these days. If you care about what's really going on then this is what you need to be listening to. Updated twice daily too so even with a downloaded podcast you still feel like you're hearing relevant, timely information.
I like the longer format. I use this podcast to get more "worldly" news, it is far more insightful mainstream domestic media in the U.S.
I really like the content and quality of this show. BBC give a well round view of the news.
Unfortunately, here in the U.S., "world news" often means "world news that directly impacts Americans". The BBC brings a balanced scope of world news and reminds me that there are things happening in the world that might not impact me directly .... but are nonetheless very important in a global society.
Was great, but seems to have stopped working today. A great distillation of BBC news for people on the go. Hope it gets fixed soon!
The comment above that getting World Service equals the access to "unbiased news" which "we can't get in America" is absurd. It's a different perspective to be sure, but "unbiased"? The BBC has a point of view as much as CNN, NBC, or Fox news. I have lived in Africa too, and find that comment very naive.
If you want a truly global view on the news not just from your own country this is the best there is.
I am so happy to see BBC added to the podcasts. Coming from Africa, I woke up to the chimes of Big Ben all my life. This is great! Finally I can listen to unbiased news that we do not get here in America. Next step will be adding BBC Africa to the podcasts. :). Thanks again!
