I finally found a worthy way to spend my time in quarantine. Thank you sir.
Really helpful and insightful podcast. Would recommend!!
I did not graduate high school. I didn’t grow up in a set of circumstances that directed me towards placing any importance on higher education. I have not been to college because I’ve always had to work several jobs to scrape by. Despite all of that, this podcast has continuously provided me a space to expand my thinking. It is presented in an interesting and engaging Manor that encourages intellectual creativity and introspection regardless of your prior knowledge or interest in philosophical matters. I have and will continue to listen to several episodes over and over — each time learning something new about myself and the world around me. Without resources like this, people like myself would find it difficult to dive so deeply into a subject that can often feel exclusive and unaffordable. I am eternally grateful :)
Really enjoy these reflections. Helps me to breathe a little easier. Super validating, relatable, funny yet deep. I enjoy the development having started with episode one. I feel stephen is a close friend, despite never having met him and being a lot less inclined to intellectual excursions. Thanks Stephen for your consistency and hard work that is available for free to me, a humble admirer, and my friends.
This podcast made quarantining, which has become a lifestyle, a whole lot better. Big ideas are made so accessible, so meaningful with the way Stephen connects them to the time-period and shows their significance in the grand scheme of things. A great podcast to listen to for anyone with simply an interest in philosophy, with no background necessary to understand.
So appreciative of this podcast. Especially now with COVID, this podcast has kept me motivated and curious to learn. It’s been a lifeline in a very dark time. Thanks Stephen for all you do!
So glad i found this podcast!! I studied philosophy years ago and listening to this gave me so many new perspectives about certain philosophers, often quite hilarious. Currently on a binge of ‘philosophize this’!
I could list many more adjectives for this program and nary a negative word would be heard. The best conversations I have with friends, family and colleagues are often inspired by a recent episode of this show. That’s the best thing I can say about a podcast. Thank you!
If you are new to philosophy this show is super accessible! Seriously, it is very impressive. Even if you are more experienced in philosophy (raises hand) this show can really help fill in the gaps in your knowledge due to the sheer scope of Stephen’s mission
I love love love this podcast! Informative, interesting and has a little metal type intro?! I think I’m infatuated 😍😂
West makes so much of philosophy understandable. I was a philosophy major at UCLA in the 70's and wished I had this podcast as a resource
My Favorite podcast! So addicting and Stephen West is the least biased, most knowledgeable host!
The host is so charismatic and down-to-earth that it’s difficult to not want to binge each episode. The content is very informative on each topic it covers and also manages to connect to our world seamlessly in a way that makes me see even concepts I previously thought as inconceivable as having some weight. Beautiful.
Hi, This show should taught at schools instead of all the useless education you can sometimes get. It should be in public libraries. Thanks for doing this
Steve’s thought experiments helped me to understand not only the philosophy concept he introduce us to in this pod, but in my general life as well. Thank you.
Such incredible content, what a resource. Thanks, Stephen.
West’s thought experiments are as valuable as the philosophy he’s teaching. These creative, everyday life, updated thought experiments are his contribution to philosophy and the English speaking world. I’d hope this work will be one day translated to other mainstream languages and reach all humanity. This podcast is a course. A fantastic one. Life changing for me. And West is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had in my life. I’m a Chemical Engineer and I’m 62. And this younger teacher motivates me to keep learning for the rest of my life. Thank-you, Thank-you, Than-you. Gustavo Bacce
It’s amazing how much of an affinity I feel for each philosopher’s worldview explained here in this amazing podcast. With each passing episode, I feel I get closer to learning the essence of who I am, or can become. “Palpating the unknowable” as Deleuze would say. Thank you, Mr. West for delivering the goods so eloquently. May I have my Philosophize This! pens now?
My absolute favorite podcast.
I listen to it every day! The host is clear and entertaining and I learn a lot!
I’m only on Episode 10 as I found this late, but this is the best podcast I have ever listened to. Top quality production and research and the host is incredibly humble and likable.
After years of seeking and listening to philosophy podcasts, this one has become my all around favorite. It lacks the discussion that make many Phil podcasts a pleasant, causal listen, but this means its actually a focused treatment of a single theme, making it perfect for introducing ideas and actually having something to take away from it. There is also an incredible variety of authors considered. The series on Gilles Deleuze is what convinced me that this is my first stop when I’m looking for podcast support of my reading. Highly recommended.
I know nothing about philosophy so this is a PERFECT start! Honestly I loved the rock music in the first couple episodes and maybe he brings it back I don’t know. This is definitely for anyone that’s new to these types of concepts and wants to get a basic understanding.
If you can open your mind, understand the importance in perspective! I believe you will enjoy listing to this podcast!
Is the work that it takes for one man to summarize, pluck, condense, massage, and cram huge works into these tiny digestible and wonderfully enjoyable morsels for plebeians like me is exhausting and can render one mad I imagine. I wish you good health and minimal distractions, Mr. West. Go now. Read more stuff. Carry on for my listening pleasure. And thank you.
If you don’t like what Stephen says (or how he says it) then ask or figure out why you feel that way, then give a well-founded explanation. Sometimes Stephen starts his show with a certain sway, story, or antidote; please listen through that part and the rest of the show, then ask, “why did he start the show that way?” Don’t just leave 3 (or fewer) stars and say, “he’s very disrespectful of....” or “he’s too one-sided.” If you listen through the show you’ll see he’s not. Listen to the whole show. Think for yourself. Find your own path through the material he presents. Question things, then email him about it, and have a discussion. That’s life. I don’t review podcasts - this is my first review. Stephen is a great delivery man of food for thought...better than Grubhub. I put off listening to this podcast. I subscribed in 2019, but started listening in 2020 - I don’t know why. Glad I’m listening now and you will too.
Avicenna was a persian Philosopher, not Arabic. Even if you google it, the first thing comes up is that he was a persian scientist.
Love this podcast. I truly think it has made me a better person.
I listened to his Machiavelli podcast hoping to learn more about this fascinating figure, but was immediately turned off by his (what I would call) opinionated rant about the Church at the beginning. I’m not sure if his other podcasts are like that, but I just found it unobjective and disrespectful to those who practice Catholicism, Christianity, or really any religion.
Relatable, well-explained & thorough introductions to each author. Love the author’s approach. My one personal request would be that you cover more theorists that are women or people of color. Catherine MacKinnon, judith butler, edward Said, gayatri Spivak, franz fanon, Frank Wilderson, etc Thank you for your hard work on these & hope your podcast gets the exposure it deserves. I recommend it frequently to others.
I’m only on the third episode and I know I’m going to listen to all of these. Excellent information presented in a cohesive and clear way! This is every philosophy student’s dream podcast.
This podcast is a delight, and has taken listeners through so many phases in philosophy in history, right up to helping introduce incredibly complicated, often inaccessible post-modern philosophers to modern listeners with ease and humor. I’ve always had a hard time understanding the ideas of modern philosophers especially, because the style of writing is often designed to gate-keep the general public out. This podcast does an incredible service to introducing listeners to valuable ways of understanding the modern world, including the political and economic systems we are living in today that is causing a lot of grief — from “fake news” to capitalist backlash to understanding fascism and what the human condition is and what it means to live a good life. I have never supported a podcast on Patreon before but this podcast changed my worldview and gave me so many small nuggets to delve deeper into that I really feel like this got me farther in understanding some difficult problems with the world. I thought I needed a therapist but what I really needed was… a philosopher! (And hey, Patreon is WAY cheaper!)
So much information but easy to follow and entertaining at the same time! Keep up the great work!
Such an easy to follow and interesting podcast. Never have found a philosophy podcast this entertaining! Much respect for someone whose been doing this for years
I started listening to the show when it first began and was with it for quite some time. It was great. I did like seeing how the sound quality and his discussions progressed. I enjoyed the wide range of topics the show presented. I stopped listening to the show about two years ago when it became bland and focused primarily on one subject, namely political philosophy. It is an important topic but the themes and ideas between the philosophers on the subject become repetitive. I check back every once in a while to see if there’s any refreshing material but that’s not the case. I gave some innocent criticism about this show on twitter once, about how the show seems to be steering in the same direction and lacks variety to give some constructive feedback and the very next episode Mr. West recorded a line directly related saying that people with this kind of criticism are simply shallow or have a lack of knowledge, which is a very narrow outlook on his part. The host makes comments like this throughout the episodes with other comments he has received in emails, etc. The host needs to know that ignorance does not equal lower intelligence. The point of the show is to give information in an easy, quick, and accessible way for people in a hurry looking for intellectual stimulation. This is like his gossip on a media platform. He has difficulty handling criticisms. He’s also a beggar of donations. Mentioning how someone can donate here and there is permissible and understandable, as someone may just know not. But there are several times Mr. West explicitly asks for donations, pleading to not have to go back to the warehouse work he once endured. If people truly enjoy the show, they will seek out a way to help if they know that the show is run by donations. They will look for the official website that has all of the information and links provided to help donate and keep the show going.
On podcast 4 now. I don’t get entertained easily but this is great information and entertainment. Thank you!
Stephen has a terrific and relaxed teaching style mixing top notch insight with humor. I’ve learned a great deal about the history of philosophy from his podcast and each episode leaves me with a great deal to ruminate on. Best of all listening to his podcast makes the hours at work fly by!
Always wanted to learn about philosophy, but I’m more scientifically oriented in school and haven’t had the opportunity, and this podcast was exactly the sort of resource that I needed! All concepts are well and plainly explained with lots of background, giving each episode not just depth, but breadth too.
Stephen West is amazing. This is my favorite podcast. I absolutely love his style. He’s so poetic. Never abrasive. Just great historical information without a political agenda. Keep it up Mr West!
I recently discovered the Philosophize This podcast and am now listening to it nightly before going to bed. I had previously watched all of the Crash Course Philosophy videos on YouTube and was hungering for more-and something that would go more in depth—but not too in depth if you know what I mean. Stephen is funny and interesting which makes his show enjoyable to listen to. I highly recommend to all those who want to deepen their understanding of where so many of our ideas and processes originated.
Complex subjects delivered in an easy and fun way. Addictive, you will find yourself devouring hours of Philosophy and wanting to learn more! Mr. West introduces Philosophy in an outstanding way, and Philosophy can change your life for the better!
Informative, interesting, useful to understanding life, - I think this is the best podcast that you didn’t know you’d enjoy. I’d suggest giving it a try!
I am a recovering philosophy major turned watchmaker. While working on timepieces, I have listened to this podcast catalogue twice. Stephen West has a natural gift for taking a complicated philosophical subject matter and presenting it in a concise manner. This is proof of Stephen’s proficiency. Not only do I find his explanations clear and succinct, Stephen manages to keep the material engaging and full of the life and excitement that philosophy should be explored with. I owe his efforts, and intend to do what I can to support them.
Stephen West’s humor, candor, and exhaustive understanding is a gift to learning and my mental health. Thanks!
Great to learn about life’s questions, big and small!
This show is a perfect way to begin learning not only Philosophy, but the origins of deep thought and it’s progress to this point. The fact that it’s done chronologically helps to connect the dots between thought-life in each societal era. I’m a young business owner and as soon as I reached some semblance of success I found out money doesn’t make me happy. Religion doesn’t do anything for me either. Material things are great but only for a minute. I didn’t know where to start when I decided I wanted to search for knowledge so I typed in philosophy and this came up. The fact that someone in my position wouldn’t have had this in 2010 makes me sad because it’s a blunder trying to learn without uprooting your life. This is helping me make a decision on what I want to do with my life so thanks Stephen West.
I have never been interested in philosophy, but wanted to learn a bit since many of my students study it. I like the way it’s explained. The presenter is relaxed, not pedantic and quite funny. Great work! Thanks for teaching me something new!
I’ve listen to the series more than once.
Very accessible podcast on the big thinkers of Philosophy. The host is knowledge and down to earth and explains complex topics well. A joy to listen to.
What a gift this. Thank you!
This is the philosophy class I wish I had in college. Very thoughtful and lays out the philosophies well.
I have listened to this podcast since it’s inception and I’m hooked! This takes what could be a very dry topic and delivers it in a way that makes me want more. Thanks and great job!
I love this podcast. Topics are dynamic and easy for novice and philosophy students alike. It’s easy to listen to, covering a lot of topics ranging from the well-known to somewhat obscure. The downside is episodes don’t come out fast enough.
I’ve listened to each episode at least three times... learn to think about the world differently, and understand yourself along the way!
This is the only philosophy podcast I've found that strikes the middle ground of explicating concepts in a way that is both easily digestible and sufficiently complex. It's really a perfect philosophy podcast.
This show is the reason I listen to podcasts! Great content, wonderfully explained, and not without some hilarious little quips!!! Thanks so much for creating this!!!!
Just simply so informative and broken down ok incredibly well. Articulating such complex topics with so many layers and history is truly a skill set that is in my opinion unrivaled. Everyone should be listening.
I can say with absolute certainty that Philosophize This! is my favorite podcast. I spend almost every waking hour listening to and absorbing the vast expanse of knowledge and philosophy that our wonderful host Stephen West imparts on us. I can’t get enough of this podcast and I am eternally indebted to Mr. West as he has not only reignited my passion for philosophy, but he also takes great care to provide the most factual information, to the best of his ability. When he can not be certain he gives the disclaimer that we, the listeners, should take this segment with a grain of salt. I have the utmost respect for Stephen and I am so enamored with this podcast. He I spores me with every episode and because of him and his amazing podcast I too am going to start my own podcast. When I finally obtain employment I am very excited to be able to pledge to this podcast through Patreon and I hope that anyone else reading this that loves the podcast as well will also pledge what they can afford to help to further this podcast and thus further our knowledge. If you are reading this and trying to decide if you should start listening, I highly encourage you to do so, if I could give it infinite stars I would. There is also a wonderful euphoric feeling that accompanies learning and with this podcast you will certainly be learning. Also, not to do with the content quality, but Stephen’s voice is very relaxing to listen to which makes his podcast THAT MUCH MORE relaxing. Thank you Stephen for all that you do, I’m so happy that every episode I get to know more than I did before!! You’re awesome and so is your podcast!!
From a fellow Stephen, I appreciate all the effort you put into the show, Stephen! I’ve learned a ton over ~75 episodes. Will donate soon.
This show turned me from a disinterested student into a curious seeker for further education and ideas. I was never into philosophy but now I am insatiable. The content leaves me contemplating for days and Stephens soothing voice and brilliant presentation made me fall in love with this podcast and philosophy in general. Absolutely fantastic, keep it up!
It is amazing how you make philosophy come alive. I have devoured all your episodes and did my fair share of sharing them. I really love how you try not to take sides but be objective
Excellent content, a must listen.
I have read a lot of philosophy books in my life. And this podcast is by far the best way to get an understanding of philosophy and the philosophers. I wish this would have been around in the 80’s when I was majoring in Philosophy. My son and I have great discussions after each episode.
I’ve really enjoyed how this podcast introduce such varying philosophy concepts and theories. He does so in a way that is accessible and always gets you to this. It’s incredibly engaging and gives interesting frameworks for us to use when thinking about our modern times.
This podcast is the best! Stephen explains philosophy so vividly and tells great stories of the philosophers. The material is comprehensive in coverage. When I opened the first episode, I fell in love with it immediately.
Truly appreciate this podcast. It’s engaging while providing an objective perspective on each topic/philosopher. The examples or comparisons offered throughout each episode allow the listener to really relate and understand the context surrounding the content.
Love everything so far but as someone who took a whole metaphysics class on Aquinas... the man didn’t do justice do such a brilliant genius who was the literal brains of the Catholic Church
I do not know how you do it, but the way you present these concepts from such a objective view point, and create so much life behind it is truly remarkable. It’s like we are right there with these philosophers of the time, and you connect the listener with such a strong argument of the philosopher, that honestly anyone can digest. It was in this glorious moment around November of 2019 when I was recommended to your show, and I instantly fell in love with it! The most impactful episodes I share with everyone is the one on ‘beliefs‘ and the ‘Frankfurt School.’ The big thing I wanted to share was the transcendence I experienced from listening. Those bounds/shackles I felt before with my “supposed” life felt free. I no longer felt I needed to subscribe to any confirmation when it comes to life path, and you reminded me of something I felt when I was younger, that made me feel it even more now, you reminded me that all though I don’t understand why I am here, why I perceive it, and whatever I’m meant to do will never be defined by other people, a job, hobby, or genetics, but by how the quality of my days are determined by the peace of feel internally with myself. Thank you for helping connect me to that, and what your show has done to my personal lens of the world. All the love my man, and I’m glad to be patreon contributer to all your future episodes, but am forever indebted to what you have already offered. Thank you for listening, I’ll talk to you next time.
A very appreciated listener here! Thanks, Mr. West for your synthesis and presentation. It’s all the better that your critical and clarifying. Keep it up!
Thank you for this! The podcast is great and the content and pacing is fantastic!
Just showing support for the work and effort put in towards creating this podcast. Im a recent listener and Im truly grateful for the content, and the clarity with which it is delivered. Thank you for making our days brighter by exposing us to these great minds.
I actually went through the list to see some of the negative comments, just to see what they were about, and the answer to their own remarks are in the podcast, he mentions he is not perfect and no human is, of course he will be a little bit biased in some regards, he will apply his own thoughts, feelings and emotions to his interpretations, his own sense of humour, to expect a perfect podcast is unreasonable. They were also complaints of how long it takes and sometimes it’s not consistent, someone is taking their own time, effort and money to produce content, for free, asking for some slight support, how can someone dare to expect a consistent format like a professional television or radio brand? If you are waiting for the newest one, dive deeper into the previous episode with own research, or just listen to an old one again. I couldn’t be more grateful for a authentic interpretation of philosophy, no he is not perfect, nor it is not amazingly consistent, but it’s the price you pay for having a great human to be willing and able to share his thoughts, the way he feels would be most appropriate, for free, with his own time, effort and money, on such a misunderstood subject. Thank you for all your time, effort and consideration in sharing with us all these thoughts, if only everyone appreciated it a little bit more, it would undoubtedly make the world a better place. Wishing you, what seems like your wife in supporting you with the podcasts, and all your family, all the best of health, happiness and fulfilment, for this new year, this new decade, and many more years to come.
Stephen West, thank you! Thank you for helping me question my thoughts and beliefs. Thank you for doing all the heavy lifting for all of us, making Philosophy so much more accessible! And thank you for filling my daily drive with purpose (other than getting to work). You are making this world a better place.
there have been so many times that after listening to this podcast, im left thinking about the material for weeks at a time. that so badly what i want from a podcast. i want it to engage me in a way where it leaves me looking at the world in a new perspective and helps me to think critically about the world around me. love this podcast, please keep teaching.
I love the hell out of this podcast. It's incredibly mentally stimulating and makes you feel like a know-it-all while simultaneously questioning your own beliefs.
This podcast is excellent, I have learned so much, and expanded my views on the work. Thanks!
Philosophy has never been my forté despite my always having loved it! This right here is gold! I love how Stephen West dumbs it down in a very informative but entertaining way. Love this podcast! Thanks!!!
Stephen West does an amazing job of explaining really complex philosophical concepts in really simply language with relatable examples. Beginning from Thales, traversing through ages of philosophical thought, through the likes of Hume, Nietzsche, and political philosophies of Dewey and Lippman, this podcast is a must listen to anyone interested in learning about the evolution and basis of philosophy.
Stephen West offers the most succinct and understandable summary of each seeker/philosopher I’ve ever encountered. He is dedicated to a clear and concise interpretation of both the straight forward and arcane musings of historic and contemporary philosophers. He obliquely refers to personal issues that at times interfere with his podcasts and one can only hope that he remains well, content, and productive. I love his sharing his passion for learning and thinking.
Stephen West does a wonderful job of generalizing nuanced concepts to a modern audience. He does an exceptional job of conveying the ways in which the thoughts of each philosopher influenced those that came after them and how that compounded body of knowledge affects our understanding of the subject today. If you have any interest in philosophy, this is a great podcast for you
I don’t know how he manages all this but I’m really, really impressed!
I’ve listened to many philosophy podcasts, and in my opinion this is the best. Mr West talks concisely and understandably for the layman, and yet delves deeply into each subject to satisfy all levels of philosopher. Excellent....
Excellent thoughtful analysis and presentation of ideas and philosophers.
The host show too much bias. To be expected in 2020 but still annoying.
Thanks Stephen West. I am better for having listened to this podcast.
Stephen does a masterful job of talking about Philosophy. Doesn’t espouse one theory or other, rather interprets what the an author talks about. Gives an unbiased view on various branches of philosophy. Love it!!!
Stephen West is arguably the best philosophy podcast available. The podcast is a description of different famous historical philosophers’ ideologies in a comprehensive and non-patronizing way. Philosophy beginners can understand it, and philosophy experts can respect it.
Stephen explains philosophy in a simple, yet comprehensive, manner. This podcast is great and will greatly broaden your POV.
Stephen West is the best philosophy professor you never had. I would pay to sit in a class that he leads! West writes clearly and effectively lays out philosophy principles and concepts that any citizen open to discourse would understand and even enjoy. I love the walk through history but also the more recent application of philosophy hypotheticals to the concepts we face today.
In fact start from the beginning. Stephen respects your time and prepares extra. Thank you
This podcast has opened my dormant mind to the endless possibilities of thinking and thoughts. It is like a hammer to a nail, philosophize this toward My INNER CURIOUS MIND. Truly appreciated, Anonymous.
Long time listener and Patreon sponsor. Stephen West is the Mike Duncan of philosophy. What better way to subvert my position in the rat race than by opening my mind during my dreaded hour-long drive to work? Would love to sport a Philosophize This t-shirt if you have any left. Best wishes to all...
A valuable contribution to the laymen’s understanding of the evolution of thought that has led to our current state of dystopia. Simultaneously enlightening and devastating. Thank you.
Stephen West is considerably the best Philosophy professor, I never had. He has the ability to simplify content, that is not always written for laymen. The fact he has provided us with countless hours of entertainment over the years speaks to his hardwork and determination. Thanks for the spark, Stephen 🤔
Just got finished with the 6 episode series on Sartre & Camus. I studied philosophy in college, and focused primarily on the Existentialist. I found this to be a great refresher of material that I hadn’t revisited in a stretch! At the same time, I think his approach is pretty digestible for people from whatever educational background. I can’t wait to listen to more!
To me, this is what modern technology is for. That Stephen couch-surfed as a homeless teen and read philosophy for consolation and now shares all of it with us (and I mean all of it!) with humor and even-handedness and can (hopefully) make a living from it is mind-blowing by itself. I have so many favorites, but the episodes Nietzsche and the existentialists were riveting.
super informative and fun!
As an avid listener of different types of podcasts, this is of the highest quality. The early episodes are very well scripted and are easily absorbed and retained by the listener. The podcast makes the timeline of western philosophy easy to understand for a beginner.
Remember that favorite class you had in college. Well this podcast is even better. Steven has a way of presenting all sides of a view point in a view clear and understandable way. I have listened to all 130 some episodes twice, and some more than that. My favorite podcast out there. It’s worth the try
I've listened to 60 or 70 episodes of Philosophize This! at this point, meaning a review is far overdue. I recommend it to just about everyone I consider a serious thinker. I have a strong background in political theory at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and I've been loving the 20th century political philosophy covered recently. The show is great for anyone looking to try and make the canon of philosophy feel a little less daunting, as well as the certified wonk who can count on any topic covered to be dealt with in a fair, engaging, and accessible light.
Stephen West explained Hegel to me in a way that was comprehensible. He was the first to do so successfully and believe me, plenty had tried. I love this podcast. West discusses so many different philosophers, with such differing outlooks, and manages to find compelling aspects of them all. This is a great listen. Objective, enthralling and coherent. I Highly recommend.
Stephen West is witty, real and he plays a part in making my life more meaningful. That might be one of the highest compliments I can pay. Thanks so much for the podcast!
Stephen provides comprehensive introductions to many of the great philosophers of history. Each episode is usually around 30 minutes and packed with with fundamental insights of these great thinkers. Highly recommend this podcast to people interested in studying the intellectual history of thought.
coherent, accessible, and infinitely important information about thinking, society, and culture: the world as we “know” it, or imagine it to be. this podcast is provoking, engaging, and well communicated.
Stephen’s shows often inspire me to search for more information. I’d like to do this after listening to all the podcasts I enjoy but some are quite long and, by the end of a show, I feel a bit over-saturated.
I started listening to this podcast back in 2016 after my ethics and philosophy classes in college got me hooked into the realms of philosophy, but i didn't know where i could go to for further studies. This podcast has been a connstant source of new ideas, and it has helped challenge certain ways of thinking, and give things a whole new persepctive, especially on the recent arc of challenging the age of enlightenment. For anyone who wants to do a good long study into philosophy this is the podcast for you.
I took philosophy in college but it was nothing like this. I love it and mostly because he makes the theories come to life. Excellent podcast!
really educational podcast; i do prefer if there’s less self deprecating jokes and making fun of the philosophers; just seems unnecessary and distracting
this is one of my favorite podcasts, maybe even my favorite. it is definitely the first podcast that comes to mind if I’m ever talking about podcasts with someone and they’re asking for recommendations. i encourage everyone to listen to it.
i recommend this podcast to almost anybody i come into contact with. stephen is an excellent guide on a path to understanding the world around you and it’s philosophical underpinnings. i have never been so enamored with a podcast before. there’s an issue with a lot of podcasts being too.. conversational yet stilted, scripted yet unprofessional. i’ve had trouble getting into the medium since many of the popular podcasts are bogged down by their hosts demeanor. stephen is the best podcast host in my book. the unbiased approach he has towards philosophy has made me question my political ideologies and even my identity at times. this podcast has elicited so many eureka moments that it has brought me to tears on more than one occasion. i’m a fairly new listener, i started about two months ago but i’ve listened to nearly every episode. stephen, by god don’t stop what you’re doing. the most i’ve been involved with philosophy for most of my life was a brief love affair with camus in highschool, and since I am unable to afford higher education in my current state it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to educate myself about really anything. when I come home from my full time job, the first thing i do is listen. i feel so much more aware. i’ve never had this many tools to put my feelings about the world into words. 10/10
I started listening to this show in Kate september 2019 (it’s now 1/10/20) and have listened to nearly every episode. I love it! Stephen is hilarious and able to condense the philosophy and ideas of these thinkers into 30 minute episodes. No idea how he does it. It’s not like you’re going to get a full college course on each thinker but he gives you a taste of their most important thoughts and then you now have a context to go by if you’d like to pursue further learning. I personally have gone balls to the wall into Heidegger and did a lot of reading on Kant and Plato and am looking forward to getting into the structuralists, Nietzsche, Sartre, and a few others. For real, I don’t know how he is able to do this. Mark Twain wrote in a letter once (paraphrasing) “I’m sorry for writing such a long letter, I didn’t have time to write a short one.” How do you do it, Stephen!? Hoooooooooow?
For my dad💖
You want a podcast that will actually be useful and interesting day to day? Then look no further. I am currently a studying to be a high school English teacher. As a future instructor, I have a huge responsibility to uphold “truth” to the highest standards, to make sure that I am not teaching future workers, but actual educated citizens with critical thinking skills that will interact and shape the world around them. I feel as if a lot of the educational system is in a way stuck in modernity (although it is moving constantly) and so nothing has helped me out more than your episodes on postmodernity and others on existentialism, etc. I hope to be able to instill more philosophy into our educational system, as I believe that is what will help us move forward. Thank you!
Philosophy has been always important in the understanding of the world we live in, and Stephen West let’s you in the conversation in a way only few can. The way West organizes the material is fantastic, since episode one, he explains so passionately every topic. In each episode West takes his audience into consideration and it seems as if he speaks to you. He keeps it fresh, and it’s very satisfying to listen to. And it is not just the structure of his show, he takes very dense topics and breaks them down into a very comprehensive fluent podcast. Through West any aspiring philosopher can learn and find a mentor in this show. However, by this I don’t mean that only certain individuals will enjoy this show, actually with the help of West anyone can philosophize and understand what philosophy is all about. While some philosophers might assert that philosophy isn’t for the popular class, shows like this one, bring philosophy to every one in a way it’s consumable without losing impact. To come to the realization that we live In a time period where every one can philosophize, is a very beautiful moment. Because we create our world and it’s best when we philosophize together. Stephen West has taken upon himself to spread the works of philosophy as best as he can, and that itself is very inspiring.
Don’t have to read all the books I promised myself I would with this podcast yet my interest is further piqued.
I had to start reading theory for my MFA program and I got hooked. Thank you for making these large voices fit into my small ears. Keep the episodes coming. Best, John
I am not a "podcast person". I have tried some, and recommended few. In fact, besides Serial, this is the only Podcast I have ever told anyone to listen to.... and I can not recommend it highly enough. If you like to think and learn, then this is your jam. Each show delivers a clear, balanced approach to a different philosophical concept or philosopher, along with the necessary historical and idealogical context. I find myself relistening to episodes through out the week.
Many of us philosophize but few of us have appropriate context for those ideas. For years of working together a close friend and I spent down time talking, discussing, philosophizing. As others asked what we were talking about, our answer was simple, “solving world problems.” Yet as talked, we were limited by own experience and historical knowledge. Now 2 years after being separated from Coop, he reconnected us through Philosophize This! Though we don’t see each other often, Stephen West allowed us continue our conversations and cultivate a friendship in our ever more lonely world. Philosophize This is meant to be shared so we all can grow. Thank you for making this material so accessible to Coop, me, and all your other listeners!
Stephen West is an amazing and knowledgeable host. He’s making the best podcast I’ve ever listened to. Simply how he lays out what philosophers’ ideas and points of view are and how it relates to the context of what each philosopher lived into. This accompanied with the great simplified examples he gives for the ideas, makes listening to such complex ideas like a walk in the park.
This show has become my favorite podcast, every time I listen I am challenged to think about the world in a new way. Thank you Stephen for bringing us these quick crash courses in different philosophers. I have learned more listening to your show than years at university.
I have been listening to this podcast for years! It is easy to follow and it is a good source of entertainment. It gives me a feeling of learning through its short episodes. I also enjoy that he talks about philosophy through the lens of the 2000s. I listen to it when I am doing things that are more repetitive and I don’t have to think. While I accomplish something, I also feel very satisfied for challenging myself on philosophical thoughts. It is a good place to find topics for conversations too. I have caught myself asking others about what I learned here many times.
I was skeptical of an educational podcast(or any podcast for that matter) as I didn’t understand why someone would not simply read or listen to a book. This podcast has changed the way I think about learning. I think these episodes appeal to a large audience. While they are digestible and fun to listen to they also present timely topics. Happy listening!
Wonderfully informative but not didactic, Stephen West manages to present portraits of philosophers and philosophies with a clarity which is not immensely technical, but remains far from a caricature--Mr. West respects that his audience will be able to follow along, even with the finer points of certain ideas, while avoiding dense and superficial language. More impressive than this ability, however, is the personality he gives to each episode, which makes this podcast a joy to listen to.
This podcast was the soundtrack to my recovery from a life changing surgery. i could listen to Stephen West’s voice for hours. And i did. Fascinating information and none of the cacophonous instruments in the beginning, simply a: “Hello, everyone!”
I am absolutely addicted to Philosophize This! At age 47 I have finally found a love of philosophical consideration. This podcast has also helped my 23 year old and myself to grow our adult relationship through frequent discussions. This is my listening choice when cleaning, showering, or just chillin. I even fall asleep to an episode each night. I have listened to every single episode at least 3 times each... Stephen West’s voice is both soothing and informative with the added benefit of a great sense of humor, too! I cannot recommend this podcast any more strongly💕
Philosophize this! Makes you think critically about the world you live in and contextualizes the philosophy that is often taken for granted today. Every show is put together with in depth research and a passion for the subject at hand. I recommend the show to anyone who asks. Enjoy!
This podcast gives an unbiased, just, and applicable perspective into the human thought process. Steve West’s Philosophize This! is pertinent to my personal psychological well-being. I believe the world would be a better place if everyone took a bit of time to listen to this podcast.
As a woman in my early 20’s, this podcast has honestly changed the way I view and approach life. I used to think philosophy was only for old white dudes in some room I wasn’t invited to, but Stephen West makes it obvious that philosophy is for anyone interested! I recommend this podcast to anyone who is willing to think critically about the world we live in and their own perceptions of reality.
Probably the best place to start learning about philosophy! West treats the subject matter objectively and focuses on giving the simplest and most accurate explanations of philosophic thought without making undue assumptions or biased criticisms.
If you have found it true that “the unexamined life is not worth living”, then you should check out this podcast. Mr. West offers clear and focused information regarding philosophical ideas, and I’ve found it not only interesting, but extremely useful. Philosophy is not just about building castles in the air; it can become a become a tool for living a more engaged and fulfilling life. This podcast has become a vital part of my practice. Your life is slowly passing, dripping away bit by bit, like water from a leaky bucket. Don’t waste a single drop. Live with intention and mindfulness. Learn what the greatest minds have thought regarding this, our communal project. Be a better friend, parent, spouse, and citizen. Broaden your mind. Listen to this podcast.
I started listening to this podcast in 2014 just after a mild, quarter life crisis. I was a new father had just made a major career move and felt an instability in my life. Listening to Stephen on my morning commute or while doing house chores, encouraged me to look inward, question my disposition, and analyze my concerns. This podcast will introduce you to Philosophy and it’s historical progression but it will also point you to resources for deeper learning should you wish. My only gripe is that the time between episode release is inconsistent, but it’s always a treat when a new one does comes out.
This is how I start my mornings, So refreshing. When there aren’t any new episodes, I just listen to one of the previous episodes. Excellent job Mr. West.
While in graduate school, i have read many philosopher’s books and articles related to arts and i found them interesting but with limitations. About a year or 2 years ago, i found Philosophize This, i found how Steve makes it easier to understand and somehow make me feel intrigued to go back listen more than once. Some of ideas has reflected to my life styles, and made profound changes to my way of thinking. Highly recommend!
I was was instantly hooked to this podcast after listening to Episode #134, Consequences of Reason (a relevant episode I hope to share with as much of my peers as I can in the near future). Stephen West has a knack in covering complex ideas without dumbing down the core concepts, all while maintaining a friend-like conversationalist tone. One thing… I actually like the music interludes in the early episodes? I wish music made it’s way back into the show. Get into this show asap.
I’ve been listening for a few months now and I absolutely love the show! I’m a high school senior and in my free time I teach a philosophy class to a handful of underclassmen. I love to show them ideas they wouldn’t find in most philosophy classes, and I can’t wait to have them listen to a few episodes of the podcast! Keep making educational and engaging content, you really are making a difference in the accessibility of philosophy.
This podcast is a must listen! Before listening to this podcast, I wasn’t even remotely interested in philosophy. Now, it’s quickly become one of my favorite subjects. Each episode is well explained to the audience, and the content never falls short of the listener’s expectations. Listen to Philosophize This! now, you won’t regret it.
I was so happy when I discovered Stephen West’s podcast. It explores various philosophical theorists/theories, concepts, ethical issues, and other complex subjects. Starting with the Ancient Greeks and progressing ever closer to the modern day, West has created a chronological tableau of insight and entertainment—with strong morals to boot.
Simply the best philosophy podcast ever. Thank you.
I cruised through the entire series quicker than any other podcast I listen to, and very much look forward to seeing new epidoes in my feed. I enjoy Stephen's tight focus on each episode's topic, which he balances with the overall progression of the series. A timeless and necessary addition to anyone's podcast roster.
I got into this show so i dont need to study philosophy for school and few episodes later i was hooked. He really does explain concepts simply. Because of this show i recognised how much i dont know. This really is big part of my life now. Thank you Steven West ! All the recommendations !
Great content. Makes you enjoy philosophy. I’d give it a 5, except the time between episodes is haphazard.
A must listen if you're interested in thinking. You will want episodes to come out everyday or weekly. It's so packed full of information. It's concise and layers philosophers historically to build a foundation of learning from the last 2500 years.
Stephen West’s series on Nietzsche, especially the episode on The Will to Power, has to potential to truly awaken you from an inauthentic slumber and put you on the path to becoming your best self. I have forwarded it to at least five friends who I really thought could benefit from it. First heard of Philosophize This from Joe Rogan podcast and have been a die-hard fan ever since. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this podcast if you care about ideas expressed in a clear and entertaining and enjoyable way.
Stephen West is a soldier out there doing the legwork for those of us who may not have the surplus time in our day to comb through the greats. To a college student who has to work through it to make ends meet, the platform he has created is a great way for me to get an understanding of the key works I want to dive into while pretending to be working hard on a 9 hour shift at a job I couldn't care less about. Highly reccomended for those who want to want to get started, but have no idea where to start
After a bad experience (teacher) in my intro to philosophy class at community college, I spent time thinking that philosophy wasn't interesting and that I didn't like it. After an upper level Feminist Thought and Theory class, I decided to give it another go, and found Philosophize This after a search for the subject on Spotify, and the rest is history. Stephen West presents ideas in an understandable and engaging way. His thought experiments help me keep an open mind about concepts I would otherwise be more closed off to, and I have been inspired to look into certain figures and ideas in more detail after some episodes, like the most recent on John Rawls. Thanks for all you do!
Philosophize This literally got me back into philosophy. I love it because he doesn’t take the usual survey, cursory podcast approach. The man is thorough and offers insight for the truly interested.
Steven has always had a very accessible approach to ideas that can seem daunting and lofty, simplifying as needed while never making them seem banal. This podcast has changed my life. Support him on Patreon
One of the very best podcasts out there. Excellent topics and thoughts. Always impressed how Stephen ties philosophy into today’s perspective.
New to the podcast, so informative and interesting- keep making more episodes!!
Stephen West presents complex philosophical concepts into understandable, but not dumb down, segments. He presents the topics and philosophers in context and leaves you yearning for more. I appreciate the work he has put into this podcast and always put his episodes first in my podcast queue.
I’ve been listening to Stephen west for years. He’s taught so much.
I took philosophy classes in undergrad and they weren’t able to explain philosophy as well as Mr West. Episodes are bite sized and relatable. Love the show
Critical thinking, desire for knowledge and self-reflection. These are all things that seem to be missing in these times, and no tool is better than philosophy to help with that. This podcast is simply great and reignited my passion for the art of thinking, love the fact that it’s mostly chronological so that you can understand how all these ideas evolved over time and how they molded our history. 5/5
Stephen really breaks down large concepts without dumbing it down. It’s led me to a whole new set of interests and reading materials. Philosophize This is perfect for a long walk or commute. It’s as stimulating and as easy to get lost in as an audiobook. I’m often repeating things I heard from this podcast to my friends. Keep making these. ❤️❤️❤️
The number of times an episode of this podcast has changed the way I thought about a given problem is significant. Stephen provides a solid foundation to the classics and a digestible dive into the modern philosophies. I look forward to each episode in my feed and recommend it to anyone who will listen.
I love this show because it creates fun and interesting talking points for me and my significant other and friends. This show really peaked my interest in philosophy.I really want to thank you for all the work you put in philosophize this!.
A few years ago I stumbled onto Philosophize This! while working a low responsibility security job (I had a lot of mental bandwidth to occupy.) I Quickly became enamored with Mr. West’s ability to, seemingly, thoroughly and clearly express the imperative details about the selected subject of each episode. Since then I have recommended the show to several friends and have heard other friends bring it up and they mentioned celebrities talking about it on other podcasts. What a delight. I look forward to each episode and I give each of them my attention so that I may absorb the concepts to my best ability. Mr. West, keep it up, I haven’t donated on patriot, but I am a huge fan.
I’ve never left a review before, but this show is definitely worth reviewing! Stephen West takes his time to find creative ways to summarize the details of philosophical theory in detailed yet easily digestible episodes. I listen to this podcast on my way to and from work daily and I rarely, if ever, find it hard to keep up. This podcast constantly encourages me to learn more and I often find myself questioning the things I thought I knew and constantly changing the way I view the world. I believe everyone should give this podcast a try, especially once he gets passed antiquity. Thank you for enabling me to learn more with every episode, than I did since the previous episode!
I at first I could not figured out why Spotify suggested this random genera as I have never listened to anything like it before. I picked the last last episode to just see what it was about, #123 at the time, and about half way through I was so intrigued I had to start from the beginning. Now having listened to every episode I can honestly give it an easy five star review. If you want non-bias anthropogenic based philosophy, then there is nothing better in my opinion. I am a hard skeptic and he explains things in a very concise and easy to understand manor. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed, it has truly changed my outlook on life in some aspects.
This podcast is perfect for me I am a 47 year old successful male that struggled to get through School because of what I guess is now labeled as ADHD so I have missed out on lots of topics that I am interested in, with this being one of those topics. I have learned so much from your show. Your podcast is so much better than reading as I tend to drift off halfway down a page. Your show keeps me locked in and interested. In particular I love the 4 part series on Fredrick neichze.
My dream is to pack myself into a sailboat and set off to sea until I’ve listened to all the episodes in order, whereby I will have experienced the most infectiously enthusiastic overview of the history of philosophy. Stephen brings us to a place and time where “philosophy” is something anyone can do, and everyone does, as he also explains the challenging concepts attacked by the “great” philosophers in a way that conjures respect respect. Stephen creates brilliant metaphors that illuminate challenging concepts in ways that are both crystal-clear and amusing. Whenever anyone asks me for my favorite podcasts, I start with Philosophize This. There are others I listen to every day or every week, but since Philosophize This comes out on an intermittent reinforcement schedule, it’s always exciting.
I’ve been interested in philosophy since the whimsical days of high school Lincoln Douglas debate (Locke is a doozie to argue with other people about when you’re 14). Since those days I had all but forgotten about what made me interested in philosophy, until I discovered Philosophize This! Stephen explains philosophy in such a simple and seamless way. He explains the context that philosophers have developed their ideas in, which is vital information that is often left out of textbooks and other materials on the subject. Stephen condenses large ideas in such a way that the point of those ideas is not lost. Stephen, thank you for the work that you do. Philosophize This! is proof that philosophy is not a boring topic. Your practical, nuanced approach to philosophy is much needed and much appreciated.
This is by far the most interesting and engaging philosophy podcast around. What Steven West does better than most is get you inside the fundamental question trying to be answered by each philosopher he talks about. Particularly good examples are his episodes on Kant, and Camus and the absurd. I also really loved his episode on Spinoza. If you are interested in delving into philosophy, if you want to read a particular philosopher and want a good summary, or if you just don't feel like you can grok the significance of a particular work or writer, you could hardly do better than Philosophize This! There may be some episodes where I would have liked to push back on something he said, but I have not listened to a single episode that was not insightful, engaging, fair, and deeply worth hearing. Enjoy!
The world has never been more confusing—this pod helps you think and make sense of it all. One of my faves.
This is the only podcast that I keep coming back to despite my changing interests. There are many episodes that I’ve listened to a few times because of how applicable the content is. Stephen West makes philosophy accessible and difficult concepts easy to digest. Just a really excellent podcast.
So informative and fun.
Learning about the thinking of philosophers from Ancient Greece through the last few centuries is fascinating and very enjoyable. My world view has been greatly expanded. Sad that it seems to be winding down.
I love this pod cast so much I don’t even know where to start. Steven breaks down tough concepts in a way that is fun and engaging. He uses great analogies to help you remember and relate to concepts and he’s jus all around funny, enlightening and entertaining. Thank you for all of your hard work! You’re a master at your craft.
I love your podcast. I’ll admit I don’t always listen to it though I’m sure I’ve heard each one once while dozing off/waking up. I found this podcast on Spotify, and I use it to sleep for work. I work the graveyard shift so sleeping during the day is tough sometimes. Spotify showed me the amount of time I’ve spent listening. 19,000 minutes just this year. Just wanted to say thank you!
Wow. All I can say is thank you for this podcast.
I just recently started listening to this podcast. I decided to start at episode one and work my way up. I was unsure about whether I would be into philosophy, because of the fact I was at the book store and was flipping through Platos Republic and realized how hard it was to understand what was being portrayed to my feeble mind. So my brain started hurting and I put the book back. I didn’t want to give up on learning about philosophy and stumbled upon this podcast on my iPhone. I started with episode one and have been working my way up. I can not get enough of this podcast. It is very well put together and it is broken down enough for me handle and understand our great thinkers of our past. Side note: I am a metal head and I loved the Bullet for my Valentine music that people seemed to have complained about in the earlier episodes, which made want to listen more. Thanks again Stephen West, your hard work has another person hooked. Well done good sir.
I stumbled upon your podcast and I haven’t been able to quit listening to them! For days I’ve been listening non stop. I’m a truck driver so I basically have 11-15 hrs to listen. I’m an old guy that is technologically challenged so I don’t know how to look you up and find out who you are? What’s your deal? How old are you? Where did you learn to speak so well and communicate your thoughts so smoothly ? Give a fat old redneck a break and give me a bio on yourself or tell me how I can find one . Keep up the good job I’ve learned exactly what I’ve always wanted to know about philosophy and philosophers. 👍👍👍
He makes me laugh so hard I want to be naked. I wish we were best friends, or better, he lived inside a mirror in my bedroom.
The host does a great job keeping you engaged throughout the episodes. His humility and humor is admirable. What I particular love about this show is the way it inspires you to be a better person through philosophy. A must podcast for all.
Has he done it all? GREAT podcast, especially in the beginning. Now that he has exhausted the philosophers, what is left? The time between recordings go months or weeks. What next? Why not just quit and do something new listeners can rely on?
Great podcast thank you.
Really good podcast if you want to learn about philosophy for the first time or want to revisit your lessons from college.
Absolutely the best philosophy podcast you can find! Mr. West must be appointed as a Philosophy professor in an Ivy League University! He is informative, talented, funny and insightful. If you want to get interested in philosophy, you must must must listen to this podcast. Absolutely stellar!
This podcast is great because it has the quality of being good storytelling, which gets me hooked on other podcasts, but it also helps me improve myself which the storytelling podcasts rarely do. I’m going through all of them in order, and am hooked.
Just finished listening to the episode with Hannah. Steve is well spoken and passionate about philosophy. I couldn’t helped but thinking of all the parallels between today’s society and all of our issues and the examples provided. Looking forward to more episodes and an easy subscribe. - Grizz
Good content~and~presentation. Great stuff.
I appreciate the educational content you put out.
I started this podcast when I got in the car in Austin, Texas, and I didn’t stop playing it until Stillwater, Oklahoma seven hours later. His three part series on Michele Foucault is one of the best, most insightful summaries on the philosopher I have heard.
This podcast is filling in all the blanks left from my BA in philosophy. I am getting so much from listening. Takes me into a profound mental space every time I begin a new episode. I have decided to go back and listen from episode #1. Very grateful! Reminds me of the reasons I wanted to study philosophy in the beginning of my academic pursuits. I can’t say enough good words about Philosophize This!!!! Very concise and very well thought out summaries of philosophers work from the most ancient to the 20th century. Please support this work!!!! Priceless!
I’m a deep thinker who got into business and somehow completely missed the boat on philosophy. I have been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints my entire life. I am also fairly accomplished in the political realm. All this said, I’ve never been a cookie cutter kind of person. My heart and mind’s thirst for knowledge and seeing things in new perspective is hopelessly unquenchable...and I adventure into all kinds of thoughts and ideals, applying them as I go. Mr. West, you sir have opened a whole entire world to me. I listened to one episode, and immediately knew this was going to be a healthy but challenging experience. I listened to every podcast from beginning to end. Not only has this podcast given me a grasp of the basics of philosophy, but it’s also opened my eyes to where our culture as a human race has really come from. I’ve also found contentment in knowing I will never actually quench my thirst for knowledge. Philosophy leaves you with more and more questions...and that’s okay. That is by nature what drives us. The true value is in how one might live. And for everyone that’s a different answer. We all make choices of how we might live...but the opportunities to actually make those choices present themselves in such a complex way. This because we are all creating, and all providing influence on many levels in each other’s world. The best we can do is to be genuine, loving, and seek to support one another in actualizing how one might live.
I enjoy this show a lot. I don’t think there’s been a bad episode yet.
Someone, somewhere, mentioned this podcast in passing, and, because I have always wanted to know more about philosophy, I decided to check it out. I’m so glad I did! I’ve been listening to it while going through my evening routine for the last few days, and the time has flown by as I’ve taken care of my chores. I’ve learned so much already, and I’m only on the 6th episode. I greatly appreciate the effort put into the making of each episode. I already feel a bit wiser! ;)
As an ex believer, love what he brings to help all of us think more and believe less in things that are faith without any objective underpinnings that are not based any factual information at all. My faith in something doesn’t make it real, just like all religion of every type and flavor. It’s a faith, just admit that and go on. We cannot explain all things but mythology isn’t the way to turn. Love the information that is brought forward, take what is relevant to yourself and treat everyone with the respect deserved as fellow humans on a journey.
Your jokes get me every time. Also thank you for this library of gifts!
So much great information and he masterfully lays it out and always makes it interesting. My only issue is that he’s extremely condescending when it comes to Christianity. I’m not a hard core Christian and recognize all religions come with their flaws, but it’s so lopsided and blatant that that’s a little annoying. Also his attempts at “humor” fall flat. Every. Single. Time. Other than that, it’s a must listen and in my top 10 of all time.
I would recommend this podcast to anyone. It’s made me feel so much more informed about philosophy through the ages. I’m not that smart, but he explains it in a way that even I can get the gist of the ideas. Great work and I really appreciate it! You’re a great host.
Brilliant lectures. I was particularly moved by the Hannah Arendt episode. Very well done and worth your time.
Normally your shows are pretty informative and interesting but this one is way off the mark. Almost every sentence is a rash, generalized statement of some sort. And perhaps you might start your episode with a definition of terms, just to clarify and set a foundation for discussion. Also, you might read some works of Thomas Sowell or Walter E Williams before you begin your feckless lecture on economic systems. Your shows on classic philosophy are good. This one stinks.
First let me say I never leave reviews... however, I took 3 years of electives in logic: philosophy and ethics and this by far has taught me more. The podcast is informative and hilarious.this not to discredit my professors but is show the respect I have for this show. Thank you for being awesome
Stephen is the best. Not pretentious, smart as hell. Love this podcast
It’s insane how cool of a guy Stephen is!
Just listen to it. You don’t have to like it and there are parts of it that will scare you and bring you to question fundamental ideas about yourself and the world around you. It’s all worth it. This is the start of journey that leads to some form of self awareness.
I’m halfway through getting caught up. Before this podcast, life was easy. I had a set of morals, I knew what I needed to know, there was always a clear answer to things. Philosophize This! has taken my views of the world, sent them through the ringer, ran them through a field of barbed wire, trampled them into the dirt, shot full of holes, and picked apart thread by thread. I’ve been forced to rebuild my worldview piece by piece, actually thinking about what my decisions mean for myself and my family. I’m a better, stronger person now. All because of a guy in WA making philosophy accessible for everyone else. Thank you Stephen.
Good morn, I recently started your pod I am on episode 3, at the beginning, I would like to let you know that I have enjoyed your presentations and the music is awesome. At the beginning of 3 you start off by saying the Rock music is gone. I paused to write this review just so you know that outside of the info being awesome and greatly needed for more Ed I loved the transitions using the music. I hope we get more as I move further into your library. Thank you
If I was only allowed one podcast, it would be this. I recommend it to all of my friends and classmates. All anyone has to do is try one episode and they can’t help but be hooked at the accessibility and clarity of the big ideas these thinkers tackled. Thank you so much!
Mr West has a great podcast going here. This podcast makes life more interesting and more enjoyable
Stephen West has a deep insight into the interconnections between the work of humanity’s greatest thinkers across history. West also has a special talent for translating all that dense material into simple to understand modern conversational concepts. It is impossible to evaluate this podcast by listening only to one episode. West designed this as chronological journey. It neatly combs 3,000 years of thinking, complete with cultural and historical perspective included with the presentation of each philosopher, their major contributions, and an examination of their personal evolutions where necessary. You’ll often find yourself chuckling as if you’re hearing a stand-up comedian, but be prepared to listen closely and rewind, as West often condenses massive concepts into single witty sentences. *NOTE: Be forgiving of the first 5-6 episodes, as these (from years ago) are West developing his role and finding the groove of the project.
Philosophy can be a little difficult to understand sometimes, but he was able to make all the ideas easy to understand and engaging the same time.
I just discovered “Philosophize This!” a couple months ago and I am already completely caught up! I plan to start over and listen through all over again. West is like that college professor that everybody loves because he breaks down complex ideas in a way that anyone can understand. I have listened to a lot of podcasts, but I can honestly say this one might be the best overall. The structure makes sense, the delivery is perfect, and the content is actually practical and applicable to modern-day issues. West nails it.
Mr. West narrates philosophical complexities in a way that is calm and unbiased. Enlightening and relaxing to listen to.
West is a master at digestable reduction, easy to remember allusions and filtering of high fallutin themes into suddenly relatable anecdotes. I will admit I grew annoyed with what I initially viewed as a protocol of watering down subject matter - that he often references bargain bin movies to illustrate the great ideas of civilization began to nag me, to point I felt slighted that he assumed I was such an idiot so as to only be able to think of Socratic values in terms of a Tom Hanks movie. But then I kept listening and thought to myself: I understand these concepts now, don't I? Would I really have benefited from an experience in which West makes incessant comparisons to Greek mythology, to a Renaissance education most of us have not received... hence our pursuit of this very podcast? It's then that I realized West was doing a fantastic public service: An absolutely free of charge span of great philosophical ideas available to anyone, at any education level, at any level of understanding, at any level of experience. You will only be disappointed by other podcasts, so eager to show you how much they know and how little they will allow you to know as well.
I stumbled on Stephen West's podcast, Philosophize This, as I am about to graduate with a degree in philosophy. I have a two month break between my final classes and I am going to binge listen to all 133 episodes. Mr. West's explanations and stories make eaech subject exciting to listen to. I only wish I had found this resource a few years ago, it would have made writing a buch of essays a lot easier.
I really, really enjoy this podcasts. He makes seemingly dense topics interesting, engaging and outright fun! I really appreciate the way he weaves a narrative around these great thinkers.
I truly admire this podcast and its’ easily digestible material, I for one dropped my intro to philosophy course in college because boy was it incomprehensible (once it got to writing essays lol) I really like learning about all aspects of history so this is the perfect balance for me!
I graduated with a degree in philosophy and like most of my colleagues took a job that didn’t a require knowledge of Kant, Derrida, or Lacan. But philosophy has always been in my heart and I’ve truly enjoyed listening to these podcasts as both a refresher and a deepening of my knowledge. Please keep it up!
This guy really does amazing job. Thank you very much. Hard to find valuable content like this.
Of all the philosophy podcasts I’ve heard this is the most succinct and clear. The host wastes no time with unnecessary biography and hobby horse tangents. There’s only so much one can do with 30 minutes, but he does an amazing job and usually does multiple episodes when it can’t be covered properly in one. Very well rounded and interesting subjects chosen. We are incredibly lucky to live in a time when content like this is freely available – so don’t forget to contribute to someone giving you a service much more valuable than the price of coffee or a beer you’d pay without hesitation.
This is one interesting podcast. Brings to light the understanding of many names in history that I knew but never really understanding how much their work was influential. Pretty amazing. You can tell the speaker makes an effort to explain things. Good job!!
This is the only podcast I listen to. My family didn’t value education. I didn’t study or read a lot of books growing up. As I get older, I wish I studied more. After seeing inspirational quotes by famous philosophers, I became interested in philosophy. However, I didn’t know where to start. Then my friend recommended this podcast and this podcast changed my life! This podcast does amazing job introducing philosophy to layperson like me. English is my second language too. This podcast makes me want to study philosophy more to be a better person. He found his calling. I cannot thank Stephen enough.
I don’t mind you covering Schmitt but shouldn’t you specify in the description that he was a member of the Nazi party?
I love this podcast! The speaker explains everything and gives definitions so you don’t need to know anything going into it he’ll explain it all. He also is funny and keeps you engaged. I highly recommend this podcast because it teaches you about philosophers and their ideas and it will really make you think.
Stephen seems to be an agnostic when it comes to everything. However, it doesn't mean he won't make fun of certain ideologies that come off as ridiculous. This podcast is insightful and entertaining.
This podcast is chock full of great information. The host, Stephen West, is awesome. He delivers each episode in an informative and entertaining way. I listen to it almost every day. At the moment, I’m starting from his first podcast about the presocratics and working my way through. I’m a philosophy major working on my AA, so most of what I’m learning at the moment has little to do with philosophy. This is a great resource. I definitely recommend it!
One of the best of its kind.
First off, I've learned a lot. You should come to the podcast expecting to learn quite a bit. However, he might know much about the history of philosophy, he knows very little about theology, and yet likes to make fun of it. So you weigh your options: you learn a lot, but you have to deal with the nonsensical, atheistic jabber.
One of the greatest things I’ve ever listened to. I’m 16 and really love the way he relates high ideals to down to earth everyday things.
I’ve listened to so many philosophy podcasts out there and NONE even come close to how clear and enjoyable this podcast is. This podcast has truly made me a more open-minded and critical thinker.
I learned this today.. We are more real when we are engaged in learning about ourself. Mr.West cares enough to share his knowledge with humor, warmth and personal insight. I savior each episode. It’s the closest thing to having a pocket guide to being human. Thank you Mr. West.
Mind expanding ideas introduced in a very methodical manner by a fun, articulate host.
Stephen has an amazing way of digging up facts and sharing them in an incredibly interesting, relatable, and easy-to-learn from way. He also has a great voice for podcasting. His episodes have already helped me gain a better understanding of not just philosophy and the origin of modern science and thought, but also how I can use these insights to improve my own life and the way I look at the world. If you're considering listening to this show, just stop thinking and click play!!
Your Carl Schmitt episodes were amazing. Thank you, throughout your podcast, for introducing me to different philosophies that have expanded my comprehension abilities. I have enjoyed and felt benefit from every episode. All of us who listen feel fortunate that you have worked so hard.
Stephen does an amazing job distilling down a wealth of information for a broad audience. Thank you for expanding my world and my mind!!
Should be required listening!
He is an incredible teacher. Very comprehensible.
Stephen West offers wonderfully distilled, easily accessible, and concisely encapsulated servings of philosophy. Personally, I get the warm and fuzzies (waxing nostalgic for my college philosophy courses) combined with a refreshing reiteration. It’s familiar and new, what an ideal combination! West sufficiently unpacks the topics/themes, explaining them in everyday language for application in daily living. He acknowledges his possible biases, when applicable, while keeping the thought dialog open. I feel that he is a trustworthy presenter. I am totally hip to that jive. I approve of this podcast and recommend it. Please, listen to it.
I’ve been hooked on this podcast since two weeks ago! Great narrative skills and a better summary of the topic! Strongly recommend.
I’ve been reading some philosophy recently and happened upon this podcast. It’s brilliant! Made for the non philosophical mind but so wonderfully put together that I cannot stop listening. It’s like a great book, an amazing meal, or a one night stand that doesn’t end. You get the idea ... it’s a great podcast.
I’ve always thought of pod casts as being a hipster millennial thing to do to feel smart and intellectual without exerting any real effort but I am now an obsessive podcast consumer thanks to this podcast. I have been listening for 3 days and already listened to 15 episodes... does this mean that the podcast is really good or that I have an embarrassing amount of time on my hands??
Even within the first twenty minutes of the first episode, it was clear that the perspective of the podcast is one that looks down on pre-Enlightenment ideas and anything attributed to a deity, or contradicting the modern view of science, despite how the reins of science are in the hands of philosophy, and that the interpretations and limitations of science are determined by philosophy. Our scientific notions are not a law unto themselves, and pre-Enlightenment thinkers were not inherently idiotic for the way they thought. In a couple centuries humanity may very well laugh at 21st century thought.
The episodes on Hegel seem to deliberately look for any popular mischaracterization of his work that's even remotely well-known, and spins it as if it's a reading of his work.
This is my favorite podcast!
Sure if you went to college you might have read some of these great philosophers, might even got into depth on some of them. But to revisit them on your own time idle or not (driving in my case) or even get to know new philosophies and concepts it’s something that this podcast is all about. Now with some maturity on me to listen to this instead of a 20 year old college student is a great shift and surprise to have a new concept on philosophy on how powerful it is. Enjoy and be ready to have your mind expanded.
Absolutely the best podcast I’ve ever found. Well done!
Stephen does an incredible job of making the most important ideas of mankind accessible to those who want to learn. I can't think of something mor important.
Amazing storytelling, condensed & easy to absorb
This podcast was very interesting to listen to and the tone was refreshing. I listened to it while writing a paper on how Machiavelli’s The Prince relates to modern day business principles and it helped a lot. Thank you for sharing :)
Great job! This podcast is refreshing. Thank you! Keep up the great work.
Play at 1/2 speed and sounds just like Jeff Bridges! Yes! The Dude explains philosophy to ya! Even better! And very good as is!
I started listening earlier this week while working and haven’t listened to anything else! It’s awesome to hear some explain this stuff in a down to earth level while still keeping the deep thinking ideas and phrases that make these works and people so great!
Stephen W’s podcast kept me sane in my deepest darkest hours. Eternally grateful.
With just the right amount of humor. As a philosophy major in college, this podcast reminds me of why I studied that subject 20 years ago and why I should keep studying it now.
Very well spoken
Discovered this podcast last week, and am so grateful for the for the person creating it. Complex ideas are beautifully deconstructed and communicated without sacrificing their impact. Thank you for creating this podcast!
Philosophy is quite hard to read but this podcast is a great summation of anti biased viewpoints of different philosophies and the speaker is funny and easy to listen to.
I was laying in bed late at night and I usually need some noise to fall asleep and I can’t fall asleep to music so I decided to listen to what I thought was the most boring thing in the world... philosophy, so I lay down and start listening and I find myself getting interested I listened to the Ionian pre-Socratic one and now I have found this new found love for philosophy I do find myself getting lost when he starts talking for a long time but other than that i think this a very interesting podcast and I would recommend it
Steven (Stephen?) West does a fantastic job of clearly and concisely explaining some of the most difficult theories in philosophy in generally under an hour (without sacrificing the nuance of each philosophical argument). And he often highlights just why these fairly abstract concepts are important to people other than philosophers. He’s amazing! If you love learning new things, it is well worth the listen.
Stephen West does a great job of introducing and teaching about the field of philosophy in an interesting and enjoyable way. Listening to this podcast is like listening to a college lecture by your favorite and most fun professor. Keep up the amazing work Stephen!
For my fellow millennials, this guy is on point. I love your podcast man, you are great.
This is a great introduction for anyone new to philosophy. But in the later episodes he scoffs and mocks theology for the first half of the episode. and then in the second starts to explain what they had to offer to the world of Philosophy. Also doesn't really have any statistics or facts to show proof for some of the things he claims.
Professor west your amazing and I love your podcast it insightful and fun never stop man I love it
Just started and I’m intrigued already! Thank you!
I am really enjoying the podcast. Entertaining and enlightening. You recommend listening at 1 1/2 speed because he moves a little slow. He also struggles with being intellectually honest (and oddly enough, philosophically honest) about ideas he clearly views as, lesser. IE; spirituality and pre-modern gender roles. So, take what he offers as purely entertainment.
Highly recommend this podcast if you’re into philosophy and thinking about things that might or might not be of any practical use
It’s a crash course in the history of all philosophy mixed with deep dives into each discipline. Same questions philosophers were asking 2000 years ago are relevant today and they continue to go on answered.
Great podcast. Complex philosophical topics broken down so even I can follow along
Absolutely love this podcast! I save some episodes because they have been so valuable. I learn quite a bit as Stephen does a great job of breaking down philosophical thought for someone who never took a class. Thank you for your work and I look forward to every episode!
Really enjoy this podcast, super informative and highly recommendable
Worth binging if you value philosophy as an educational resource to improve your knowledge and life. M. West has an uncanny ability to deliver complex philosophical topics in an approachable way, and seems to make every episode relevant to the way you look at the world. Highly recommend for anyone tangentially interested in philosophy or how how thinkers throughout history have influenced us.
Stephen does a superb job of breaking down philosophers and their schools of thought into relatable concepts, and describes how they fit into the broader realm of philosophy altogether.
YOU ARE THE BEST!
This podcast is incredibly well done and fascinating. I minored in Philosophy yet never had a professor as in depth or as entertaining as Stephen. Please keep making this show.
I’ve always wanted to learn philosophy, but was held back by how overwhelming it can be. This podcast has perfect sized portions that are thought provoking, but still digestible. It’s easy to re-listen to and I usually catch something I missed the first time, and it helps the podcaster has a great sense of humor!
Good way to think outside of the box, but there are few to little statistics and references to show the proof in the pudding A little to much assuming of how people think and live for me
Steve, great work. I heard Joe Rogan mention your podcast which came at a great time. Coincidentally I’ve been really wanting to learn philosophy! Started in episode 1 and now on episode 5 in a matter of a couple days. Very entertaining and truly a joy to listen to. The best part? I’m on episode 5 out of well over a 100! Binge listening at its finest!
Stephen West is really great at explaining the ideas of each philosopher, and he is fun to listen to.
Great podcast! I really appreciate it.
This is my favorite philosophy podcast. Tried others and Stephen is still #1. Thx, keep up the great work!
very informative, i've actually re-listened to many episodes.
I've tried listening to several different podcasts, and this one breaks it down in a very understandable and relatable way, while staying very entertaining! As someone who does not have any previous background in philosophy, these have been super pallatable and it's also helpful how they are in chronological order to get a better grasp on the context of each subject. These podcasts really got me into philopsophy and also they are very funny! Thank you Stephen!
This show is fantastic. Have started listening to get me through hours of tedious art fabrication. The dude is smart without being condescending, and the show is both informative and entertaining. I know I’m late to the party, but I actually miss the little rock music transitions from the first couple of episodes. Added something personal and idiosyncratic to a show about philosophy. Don’t listen to the haters, bro!
Get into it, give it a listen why don’t ya?
My favorite podcast I have ever listened to, thank you Steven for the amazing work you do, I can truly say this podcast has improved my life and made me a better person.
My favorite podcast by far. Incredibly well done, educational, thought provoking, and fun to listen to. Keep up the good work.
A simply constructed but well researched show. The host‘s demand that we not allow mental laziness or fall back into shortcuts to virtue. The show is also not tied to philosopher biography but rather is focused on where ideas intersect and interact.
Philosophy can be boring it doesn’t have to be. I think that’s the motto Stephen goes for and it truly works. He offers insights and explanations with clarity and conciseness while also inject his own humor in the content. I’m only a philosophy minor now but this podcast extends philosophy to all areas of my life and calls me to be more introspective. This podcast has something for everyone so i promise you won’t regret it.
I just started listening to this podcast and I am really enjoying it. I know it’s late to the game, but thank you for putting this together. It’s so nice to listen to this and learn about the great philosophical thinkers. It’s kind of amazing the depth you went into when creating this. I wish I knew about this podcast earlier.
I’m fairly new. I came across this podcast by pure accident. Nonetheless, I’m so grateful for the education. Wonderfully and comically told. Thank you!
Very clear, interesting, and most importantly, NON-PARTISAN perspectives on many of the most influential thinkers throughout history. It’s rare to find such non-partisan analyses of these ideas in our current time, much less having those analyses presented in a digestible and practical way.
Wow! This feeds my soul. Never boring!!!
This is a podcast that is worth listening to from start to finish. I started at episode one and have learned so much within the first 25 episodes, it has changed the way I look at life and especially politics. Once I have listened to this podcast in full, I may have to go back and listen to them all again. This is my favorite podcast of 2018/2019. Stephen West is increadibly good at what he does in this podcast, which is laying out the contributions of each philosopher in an interesting way which keeps a listener waiting for each next word. He mentions that the first ~100 episodes are rough and might be hard to listen to, but I did not find this to be an issue. As stated, I am only 25 episodes in, but they have all been highly enjoyable to which to listen.
Great, easy to digest information on complicated subjects. I really appreciate it!
Very thorough and laid out well, this series is terrific. My only gripe is Stephen could slow down a bit when talking. Make it seem more conversational (and therefore easier to digest) and less like he’s reading from a prepared statement. Also, more examples would make it easier for the listener to digest.
What the title says. Thank you, get on Joe Rogans Podcast
Stephen breaks these very hard to grasp concepts down so well I can actually wrap my head around them. Philosophy always had a way of being a little intimidating for me so his way of explaining is invaluable.
Philosophy explained in an enjoyable way. Definitely recommend
I think I'll look back fondly at listening to this podcast for the rest of my life. Hell, I might listen to it over and over again for the rest of life. Mr. West is so eloquent and has completely changed my outlook on life and the world. Great man, great podcast. A must listen for literally any human on Earth.
Where have you been 😃
This is one of the best ways to actually learn something. West describes things in a way that is educational and entertaining. If you love knowlesge and learing, this is a podcast for you.
Mr. West does a great job throughout each episode that I have listened to so far of putting the subject of philosophy into terms that are understandable and fun to listen to. He does not waste time beating a dead horse, and presents information in a manner that sort of push-pins it into the back of your mind and makes you think about for long after the podcast has ended. I highly recommend giving it a listen!
What a beautiful podcast! I’m listening to it while running! It’s very educational and it keeps me great company! Stephen West is incredibly funny :) I mean seriously, remember Laozi as lousy or lazy? Hahahaha!
Very informative, insightful, some humor, and well thought out. Refreshing to hear something real and educational versus the “sea of superficial content” that’s out there. I’m a fan! Need more of it...
Love this podcast. His preface of episode one was spot on though 😂😂😂so very cringy. But it got better. I beg you though... no more 10 minute Subway anecdotes. Dear God.
Great info + an engaging host + thought provoking topics = Philosophize This! - a fantastic podcast covering a great deal of the most salient philosophers in recorded history
I saw a review where the reviewer mentioned that they hold a BA in philosophy and this was better than any class that they were forced to sit through. I had to laugh. I don’t know what kind of school this person went to but...well I went to a Big 10 school and the professors great. It was me that was the issue. I was a little immature, well I am dyslexic too and the reading load was heavy. But the worst part of it was that most of the professors seemed to have anger management issues. Stephen West is like the chill professor that I wished I had at (censored) University. Oh, and he is funny. And if you ever wondered why the hell that long-haired dude in your dorm was studying philosophy, Stephen will help you get it. His examples are clear and generally self-deprecating. It’s like your best friend want to help you study for that philosophy exam. Download it, you Kant go wrong.
I’m puzzled as to how it took me more than 5 years to find this podcast. I love it. Thank you, Stephen.
I have been slowly finding myself getting entrenched in philosophy the past half year. I only wish I found this podcast sooner, because it is the perfect balance of in-depth coverage and easy to approach explanations. Stephen is quite interesting as well!
Recently discovered this podcast and I have listened to 6 episodes in 3 days. Stephen, the host, does a tremendous job of ‘dumbing down’ complex thinkers and thoughts to make them understandable, relatable and enjoyable.
This show never gets old for me. Every replay I find a golden nugget of knowledge. Fan since the beginning!
Phenomenal! Thank you for all of your hard work!
After decades of toil, I finally have the luxury to listen to about 5hrs of Podcasts/day. I have perhaps 20 that I get to regularly. I research which Podcasters are the outstanding in their field before I download anyone and I believe I listen to many of the best podcasts one the 5 or so topics I like most. I feel Dan Carlin in History and Stephen West in Philosophy are my favoirite two podcasters on earth right now. Stephen is so great at comdensing philosophers writings down to understandable and time-efficient portions and making it relatable to life on earth today. It's real easy to surf the handful of poor reveiws on this site and see who should listen with caution. For the 99% of the rest of you, please start listening! Stephen is funny and educational/informative on so many topics foundational to western thought.
Starting from the beginning, looking forward to listening to this wealth of information you have gathered. Thank you so much you’ll make working 3rds enjoyable.
I started listening recently and I find myself choosing to listen to this podcast over listening to music. It is both funny and educational.
Your show reeks of the modern liberal Democrat voice.
I’m a little late to the podcast scene, and I minored philosophy in college, but since starting my career in the expedited shipping field I’ve sincerely missed learning about this topic. I saw this podcast and thought it might re-spark my interest and this is the best thing that could’ve happened. It’s so good!!
I really enjoy the host and the way he explains things. I’m listening from the very beginning and very much enjoy it. You get to learn, think, and also be entertained.
Like a corndog stick. See the part you like, take a bite. I discovered this podcast last night and i’m already listening to the series on Foucault twice. The podcast is succinct, fast paced, engaging and even exhilarating. Love this podcast- thanks
This podcast is brilliant. Give a go if you have have any interest in philosophy whatsoever. Every single episode is thought provoking. It’s a great introduction to a discipline which can enrich your life.
I just came across this podcast about 3 days ago, and I’m loving it, I just finished episode 10. I’ve been watching documentaries, mini docs, and other sources, looking for stuff like this. And now that I’ve found this I have so much to listen through and I couldn’t be happier (I have a binging problem lol). I love that not only does he present the knowledge in a provocative and captivating way, he does so without taking a bias on it allowing and encouraging you to come up with your own thoughts. I look forward to and dread the day I finally catch up to current episodes, because that means I’ve finally watched through all of them, but it also means I’ll have to wait for new episodes (at least I hope you’ll still be making them). Im pretty sure this is my first iTunes review, so that just goes to show how much Im enjoying this podcast.
This podcast has helped me tremendously in cutting through the academic density of philosophical ideas and their history. Past attempts at educating myself in this field have left me misinformed and discouraged. I will not claim to anything as hubristic as a grand understanding of philosophy as a result of this podcast, but I do understand a lot more that I did before.
emil cioran please 💙🙏🏼
I’m listening to this on Spotify. I’m only here to slap 5 stars and leave.
Well put together. Specifically in the chaining together of Thoughts. Give thanks for your efforts.
Great stuff! Makes me question what I think I know.
I didnt know anything about the philosophers or had any interest in philosophy. I just took a philosophy class in college because it was mandatory but this podcast has educated me so much! Stephen is funny and these episodes are really well put and super interesting! I want to learn more about these people after I finish listening to the episodes. And I have read so many books by Nietzsche, Camus, Simone De beauvoir, and continue to listen to more lectures from other sources. Thank you Stephen for providing this excellent source of knowledge that is easy to understand. I eagerly wait for new episodes! You are making a difference! Thank you!
I believe Stephen West is genuinely seeking truth and putting forward the positions of many major players in the field of philosophy (and the mischaracterizations of these major players opponents). I would like to see these philosophers be used to speak back and forth toward actual truth. For example the episodes on Nietzsche and his understanding of True World Theories seems to show how little Nietzsche actually understood these theories, most clearly Christianity, so what would the responses to the straw man Nietzsche presented be. Because it lacks this dialogue I believe seeking truth (to know more than I did yesterday) is wanting. However, maybe it gets the conversation started.
I ordered some things from Amazon for Christmas and was distraught when I realized I forgot to go through the Amazon banner. I’m sorry Stephen. I don’t know how it happened. Everybody reading this, please remember to go through the Amazon banner next time you purchase something from Amazon!
I don’t know how he does it. I’ve gotten more from this podcast than my 4 years at university with philosophy as one of my majors. I truly cannot speak highly enough for what is deserved. One month when my funds were wiped out and I had to borrow money, I made sure I included my patreon donation in my bare necessities budget. I’ve literally given my last penny. And it was/is worth it. Thank you so much Mr. West
I minored in philosophy in college but never got the big picture. Then came along this podcast. The last year my mind has undergone a radical transformation. The multitude of realities barking at me from my peripheral vision (what to make of life as a maybe atheist, the capitalism that we live and breathe, being a cog in the bland machine of human existence, the true violence inherent in life) don’t scare me anymore. In fact, I can look at this stuff dead on with a mix of comfort, curiosity, and skepticism. Thank you West. Truly. Thank you.
Love this podcast. One of my favorites. Different philosophers and philosophies are presented well and are thought provoking. I also like how he ties in history. Context matters! If you love philosophy, I highly recommend.
As a casual reader of philosophy for about 15yrs now, I can follow most discussions I hear on the subject - I’m not a beginner. Regardless of that, Stephen West makes philosophy a tangible and accessible idea to not just people like myself but also people who have never studied philosophy. Truly delighted to hear the upcoming episodes on Deleuze, also his episode on Schopenhauer is the absolute best. Excited to see perhaps something in process philosophy in the future 👀
No joke, West. I don’t think it hyperbole or cliche to say life isn’t just living. Episode #125 found me at an artistic and personal low. You have lifted me, sir. I owe you one.
Content is entertaining -- as is the host! Fun to watch his style evolve over time. Stick with this one! Great listen and excited to have a whole bunch of episodes ahead of me :)
This is the most well done, informative and useful podcast about philosophy that has ever been created.
I’m a philosophy newbie and i love how each episode is broken down and easy to understand. It has encouraged me to seek out reading theories on my own. keep up the good work! The Panpsycast is amazing as well
Makes complicated, obtuse, and often incorrectly taught philosophical concepts accessible, entertaining, and applicable to everyday life.
I am a capitalist. This great man taught me more About socialism than anyone in a way I never heard before. Moreover, he breaks down extremely difficult concepts effortlessly. Recommended to me by Ben Shapiro.
If you've ever wanted to more about philosophy, this is the podcast to for you. I've always loved to learn about philosophy, but apart from long, dry works, there were few resources. This podcast is in depth enough to give you a good understanding, but not so full of jargon that you'll get lost.
I get easily distracted when I listen to podcasts but this one keeps me hella engaged. Dude Ive tried listening to other philosophy podcasts before and all were either too verbose or too boring or both. Thank you to Stephen for creating this and continuing to make more episodes! -yadi
Thank you so much.
Excellent podcast to start each day. Well-constructed, effective approach to philosophy that appeals to the “average” listener. Filled with humor, history, and wonderful perspectives on life & humanity.
It’s near the end of 2018, and I stumbled upon “Philosophize This!” Yeah, I’m a little embarrassed that it took so long, but I started at the beginning, and I’m about 15 episodes in. Seriously, what a fantastic resource! Thank you so much for all the hard work you’ve put in over the years!
i’m currently a student studying political theory and this podcast has helped me understand some of the more difficult topics i’ve had to read. it makes learning hard things, easy, and makes boring things, fun. highly recommend checking out!!!
It may be cliché to say but learning should be fun. It’s a real tossup as to what’s better, either Stephen West‘s presentation or how Stephen West presents philosophy. Great podcast I listen to it every day, one of my favorites.
I came here a podcast skeptic, but was desperate for a dose of Foucault and decided to bite. I am now on my 5th episode. Manages to present clear and concise stories without stripping the ideas of their elegance and profundity. Thank you!
I have listened to almost every single one of these episodes. I plan to finish and soon. It is worth every second of time invested. Thank you Mr. West. I greatly appreciate you.
If you like philosophy, this is the podcast. I’ve been listening from the first couple months, and it’s a core part of my podcast rotation.
Excellent! One of the best philosophy podcasts I have found. Highly recommend.
This podcast gives a good summary of many secular thinkers. When considering religious thinkers, however, it’s a different story. It’s very clear that the narrator is not religious because his biased views are injected with his summary of many religious thinkers, diluting the content and belief of many great thinkers. I don’t believe justice was done to Pascal, Augustine, or Boethius.
This is the best podcast I’ve listened to. Stephen West is awesome. I feel like I’ve learned so much, I can’t believe this podcast is free!
