Just the right length of show to get message across and keep audience wanting more.
As a songwriter and producer this show always gets the juices flowing and makes me feel inspired
The best podcasts are an art medium unto themselves. This one delivers.
This connects on so many levels. Just cannot get enough. -ME Absolutely wonderful: Waxahatchie
This series animates music, revels in its details, and, on multiple occasions, has genuinely moved me. Love it.
This podcast is so special! I relish the details of how a song came together for an artist. I especially enjoyed the episodes on “Closing Time” and The Daily theme. I love how detailed the episodes are and the way the artist walks us through each step in the song’s creation. I recommend this podcast often, and I have even assigned it as homework to my students!
I absolutely love this podcast, but I which it was able to feature some more week-known artists as well. It’s super cool and exciting to hear the thought behind songs you know well.
I literally tell everyone about this podcast. Extremely well-produced with such a diverse and interesting range of musicians and artists. 🖤
really really good show. makes me feel Smart when i’m familiar with a musical guest; helps me Become Smart when i’m not!
So happy I found this while browsing for something new(to me.) The first episode I listened to was Aimee Mann. I have spent untold hours with her music and love her madly. Love Jonathan Coulton too and hearing about their collaboration to write this gorgeous song was a real treat. We are so used to hearing the finished product that learning about the process makes the music even more amazing and personal. Cannot take my ears off it!
I just love this.
I love everything about this podcast! learning the story and musical process behind songs from my favorite artists (and artists I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet) - just wonderful. Can’t recommend enough.
Lovely to hear how someone’s creative process unfolds
I always end up discovering great new artists or listening to music I wouldn’t normally gravitate towards- and learning about the creative process of my favorite artists too!
love that this podcast captures the idea of storytelling through songs
This is my favorite new podcast! Very happy to have discovered it during this time 💘
I want to like this more than I actually do. The main problem is that 90% of these songs are unfamiliar to me.
Perhaps it is because I am a Nathanial fan but this episode was so fantastic. You could feel how emotional it was for him to write this song and he was so honest in his interview. More like this please!!!
I absolutely love the premise and format. Executed with surgical precision, and I appreciate the absence of host throughout. My only criticism is that I don't know or care about the majority of the musicians covered. But that is a taste thing, right? When he does cover bands I like, it is a real treat.
This podcast rules and is one of my favorites. Great concept and very informative and entertaining. You really get to deep dive into the stories of these musicians and it’s great.
Great concept but wish there were more well know songs. I love listening to the breakdown of the songs and behind the scenes information. I don’t listen when it’s a song or artist/band I’m not familiar with.
This podcast is rare in that it serves dual purposes for me: I am thrilled when I come across an episode featuring an artist I already love explaining their process, and it enables my desire for music discovery insofar as I have found previously unknown songs to add to my playlists. Love it! Keep up the great work.
One of my favorite podcasts! Soothing and calming to listen to, while also being fascinating and taking you deep into musicians’ process. Perfection! And such an impressive array of artists too!
Does anyone really find protools production interesting to hear about? Gimme some novel ways to get great sound with stuff found in junk drawers in any home.
Another top notch podcast from the Radiotopia network! Hearing the story and production behind songs is so fascinating. I’ve been exposed to tons of artists that I normally wouldn’t gravitate towards. I love the wide variety of genres!
So many of my favorite songs have come from this podcast. I love knowing more to the lyrics and inspiration to songs. I love how “piece by piece” this podcast shows how a song is made and the stories around the song writing/producing process. I hear so much more to songs featured on the podcast whether.
Only a couple bands/songs I was interested in listening to. Metallica was cool but vague and not very song specific info. The Fleetwood Mac episode was much more in depth and enjoyable to listen to.
Fell in Love with this podcast as a recommendation. It’s a lot of fun and I use this as a way to meditate and learn.
Whenever I recommend this to people, I always tell them that even if you don’t like the song or genre you’ll end up appreciating the process. An utter delight.
Good all the time
I can’t say enough about this podcast so I won’t even try. If you love music or a musician who knows music this podcast breaks down one song from an artist from initial first lines, collaboration with producers and engineers to band members and other musicians all streamlined in a 20 -30 min package. Well produced and thoughtfully presented.
I haven’t found a single podcast quite like this one. It gives such an interesting perspective to music that I love. I definitely gain a new appreciation for the songwriting process and how each artist does it differently. 11/10 would recommend.
I love that this podcast goes in depth into how artists write their songs! And even though I don’t listen to every artist that has an episode in this podcast I think that is actually a good thing because it means the host is picking a wide spectrum of artists and music genres to work with! I have discovered many new songs from artistsI already knew and loved and ones that I just discovered. I love this podcast! Keep up the great work!
There are only a few podcasts I save up for a long day driving. Song Exploder is one of my favorites. Breaking down music in the words of the artist makes me a better listener.
In handing the keys to the show to Thao, Hrishi gave his show over to the leader and songwriter of a kickass band and thoughtful interviewer. The original concept of the show was amazing, but this season has breathed new life into that concept and is what made me re-subscribe. Keep up the great work.
This is a Really interesting show that will deepen your love for your favorite artists and expose you to new ones in an interesting way that’s far more intimate than if you had simply heard a new song.
First pod cast about music that I've listened to all the way thru. Great and varied selection of artists. So well edited and recorded. Isolating tracks and having the artist discuss parts of the song from an emotional, technical, and histrionic perspective makes this podcast sooooooo satisfying!!!!!
I have always been a somewhat intermittent listener to this podcast. My favorite was The Long Winters episode. I don’t care for the new host though, and I suspect she was installed to provide more male/female balance in the Radiotopia host stable. That’s disappointing and I probably will be even more intermittent moving forward.
Thao is one of the most brilliant performers I've ever seen live. She was opening for Neko Case and she was by herself on a stage with a guitar and she commanded the attention of everyone in the room. So much so that even when there was speaker trouble, everyone just crammed really close to the stage in order to hear her. She really knocked me and I'm so glad that I get to hear her every week on this show!
Quack quack quack quack quack quacckkkkk
Shows new direction is all vocal fry lame tracks and laziness. Bring back Hrishikesh, please
Great show, thanks for introducing me to so much good music. Lots of thoughts, full review on Episode 2 of: andyspodcasterpodcastingpodcast Spoiler - you get 5stars, a police siren duck, a magic cow and some tuna.
Great pod. It makes me happy 🙂
Really love song exploder - one of my favorite podcasts out there. Loved the most recent episode with Nakhane - please try and showcase more artists that aren’t top forty and come from interesting places with impactful stories: there’s so many out there! Also, loved the short stint of music score episodes - would really like to hear more of those. Please no more Mumford and sons type bands :p Love y’all, Garson From NY
I love the length of Song Exploder episodes. the 20-30 minute norm for these podcasts means that what you get is always insightful. Of course it would be nice to have a few hours to get into these artists' heads, but I love this format. Concise and wonderfully insightful!
If you enjoy music and the related creative process, you should definitely check out Song Exploder. While the basic path of creating a song (or any artistic endeavor really) involves taking an idea from inital kernel to final product, it is the story of the journey and personalities involved that add more interesting details to already unique songs. The artists featured are very different and while I would not listen to many of them, it is always interesting to hear about their process. Some are methodical, some are random, some are lucky, and others have great producers. Finally, the short (but variable) duration of these podcasts makes them convenient. They do not require an hour, but they give sufficient time to each story. Keep it up!
It's a treat to hear from creators about what inspired a great song and then be taken through the process of how the song was made (including snippets of early demos and isolated tracks).
The show dissects your favorite songs, and even makes the songs you've never heard of before sound interesting.
What a unique, cool and informative podcast. I’ve discovered some new music and learned so much about music and the creative process.
This is a very well done podcast. The structure and format are perfect. Very interesting and unique content.
Great if you’re into avant-garde, experimental music. The one improvement I recommend would be be to give words describing the styles or genres of each track.
I’ll miss the first host. I’m still not sure what his name is but my brain always heard it as “Richey K. Sureway” with a strange pause halfway through. We’ll miss you Richey!
Unfamiliar with most artists.
I’ve listen to three or four of these podcast already and they all have been solid from Weezer, to Fleetwood Mac, to Big Boi. I’m actually genuinely learning and being inspired by listening to these
If there was a way I could give this podcast a 100 star rating I would! This is a great podcast I really enjoy listening to it! I love to hear the back story of songs! It is well written and I encourage you to make more episodes. It’s great for the whole family to listen to in the car or while we are cleaning and I love to listen to it when I get the chance to.
Sometimes the artist veers off course and self promotes too much, or goes away from song structure and inspiration. Keep helping them talk about song structure primarily and the show rocks!
The idea for Song Exploder—musicians and songwriters discussing their process—is a great one. I generally enjoy hearing from the artists who appear on the show. Unfortunately, the host has a tendency to mansplain his female subjects, which leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth. I would love to hear almost anyone else host this show, instead of some obnoxious jerk who thinks he knows better.
Cool to hear how these songs are constructed and the creative process. It seems like the artists chosen lean heavily on the “indie” side. Although I don’t mind that too much, it would be nice to hear from other musicians in other genres eg, rock, alt-country, punk, garage, hip hop, folk, etc...
The backstories are amazing. Definitely deserves its name. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Song exploder takes us on a journey inside the minds and studios of excellent artists to bring their songs to life. You’ll never listen to them the same way again. The format is entertaining and seems to let each artist walk us through their creative process in their own way rather than listening to a scripted set of questions
I love this pod- so informative- even on the songs I do not like it is interesting to learn how they come together and what the musicians were thinking about.
Thank you JVN for turning me towards this fab podcast. Whenever I see a new episode is available I stop what I’m doing to hear it. It’s genius.
Listening to this podcast has made me fall in love with music again. I have a new respect for the song-writing process and a whole new appreciation for the music I already know and love. The episodes are accessible even though I’m not a musician. I highly recommend!
I have consistently been surprised by the artist’s stories that I find interesting on this podcast. Often they are in a genre that I never would have sought out independently. This owes largely to Hrishikesh Hirway seeking out a diverse array of artists to interview and also his ability to largely keep himself out of the narrative and let them tell their own story. The Neko Case episode was amazing, both in process and inspiration.
I don’t listen to many podcasts because I usually am not drawn to it long enough to finish listening to the whole thing. However, this podcast is so different. It’s invigorating, compelling, and makes you appreciate the art of music making and songwriting. I’m so glad I was recommended this- I haven’t been able to stop listening!!
Yes, the content is great. Really, really great, but too much focus on the same genre. The songs are devoid of soul. 90% have a technical feel, very little rock, pop, or soul songs. The song sound like they were made in a labratory. Flex your musical muscles guys.
By far my favorite podcast. So intimidate and powerful to get behind the scenes with musicians and learn about their motivations. My favorites are the film composers!
A lot of times I'd rather listen to music that podcasts -- this show combines both. I've learned so much about how music is made from this show.
The premise for this show is great. Each episode features a songwriter breaking down the process of creating one of their songs. Sometimes the focus is on creating different parts and experimenting with instrumentation. Sometimes the emphasis is on the emotions and meaning behind the song. A good variety of musical genres is represented. The one caveat that I would offer is that each episode is heavily reliant on the ability of the songwriter to articulate their process, and sometimes they fall short.
The Podcast is beyond great and immediately became my new favorite. On a side note I was just listening to Jon Hopkins episode Luminous Beings and it was just so incredible hearing the entire process. However to my complete surprise when I finally got to hear the song at the end. I was shocked & very sad at how horrible the final song turned out. Clearly Hopkins overly edited and manipulated each sound to the point of ruining what could have been a great song. In all honesty the song ended up sounding like one is walking through a Las Vegad casino. He tweaked the sounds so much that it ended up sounding like the sound of a huge group of slot machines!
The first time I heard Song Exploder was on my way home from work, Natalia LaFourcade, Hasta la Raiz. The way the song was deconstructed was amazing. I am a musician so I have been in the studio to record, and this podcast has given me tons of ideas about how to record. Plus, the music is so eclectic and interesting. I can’t end this review without saying that I’m in love with /hrishikesh’s voice. Yes I had to cut and paste his name from the website as I can’t spell it. But wow - that voice. I could listen to him read the dictionary. 😊.....thanks so much for this wonderful podcast!
Learning about the elements that go into a song increases my appreciation for good music. While this podcast may not have the newest songs, it will likely have songs you haven’t heard or artist you don’t know. In less than 20 minutes, you learn about the work that goes into a great song and the inspiration behind it. Unlike other music podcasts, the artists are doing the talking. It’s brief, interesting, and serves an excellent springboard to exploring new music.
Allows you to better understand the creative process and hear some fantastic music.
I love this podcast. It’s very well edited and the artists really go in depth. The audio is mixed perfectly. This show is great for casual listening. Even if you don’t know an artist or their song, this show makes it interesting. They also play the song in full at the end.
Highly recommended for anyone with more than a passing interest in music. While musician interviews are not rare, it’s intriguing to hear them give their perspective on how a particular song came together. Topics include songwriting, instrumentation, musicianship, and studio techniques, depending on the artist and song. Especially interesting are the individual tracks played in isolation to illustrate specific points. Thought I’d only want to listen to episodes about my favorite songs but nearly all have been worthwhile and helped me discover some new favorites.
I discovered this pod from West Wing Weekly. So great!
This podcast is great for any music artist or someone just interested in what makes a song. I write my own songs, so hearing from artists, I love and admire, about their process inspires me with my own process. So thankful for this podcast.
I listen to this before (and sometimes during) work - my work is primarily visual, but hearing about other artists’ creative processes through this podcast has inspired and affected my own approach. Keep up the great work, thanks for such a cool and interesting podcast!
Totally addictive, thought-provoking listening. Connects you to these songs and artists with humor, intelligence and heart. Recently listened to some episodes with my pre-teen daughter and sparked some incredible discussions about the creative process and the power of music.
Years ago, after hearing the Postal Service album, I really wanted to hear a discussion about the concept of the album, how it was produced and what the artists were thinking while creating it. I felt that Google could give me nearly all the answers to my simple questions but the internet lacked the ability to answer these deeper questions of creative intent. Then I found Song Exploder... this is such an amazing deep dive into the minds of musicians. So often when musicians are interviewed they are forced to discuss the most ridiculous topics by interviewers that are simply not familiar with their work. This podcast is different. It's about the music, the inspiration and the process. I recommend it to anyone that is true lover of music. I'm so grateful that it exists.
Great series with great guests, assembled by a great host. If I could change anything, it would only be to make each episode longer - I'd love to hear extended versions of the conversations about putting together each piece of music.
Introduces you to some fabulous music, as someone who has nothing to do with the creation of music it still feels great getting that insight into the process.
I stumbled upon this podcast and since then it has given me so much insight into the song process. Great!
gives new meaning to old favorites and new ones! I particularly recommend the episodes from Grimes and ODB. It's a great show for musicians and music fans alike!
This show helps you explore and understand music in such a cool way. Such a great concept!
Just discovered this off a best-of list; as an introduction to the creative process of some of the artists I've followed for years this is absolutely delightful!
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! 'Nuff said:)
New Years Resolution: finally leave reviews for at least your top 50 podcasts. They give you way too much free entertainment. The least you can do is leave them a quick review. New Years Reality: I listen to 50+ exceptional podcasts. I don’t have time to write that many reviews. New Years Solution: Leave this cookie-cutter review for the few(ish) podcasts you love. Only review the ones you would (or have) recommended to people in real life. Review Note: I have listened to hundreds of podcasts, this is (in my humble opinion) the best of the best. Download, enjoy, and then recommend widely.
Listening to these podcasts really expands your mind on music and musicians themselves. I enjoyed a number of these episodes. It would be really cool to have Hole (the band) to do one from their Celebrity Skin album. Since that album will be 20 years (.98)
One of my favorite podcasts! I wish the episodes were longer because I just want to know everything.
Being a music junky, I'm always looking for new artists. By listening to Song Exploder, I get to explore genres that I'd never have gone out of my way to listen to. And hearing what the artists have to say about their work gives me a new appreciation for music in general. Excited to keep listening!
Hrishikesh knows how to relate to artists being one himself. This is a podcast by an artist allowing other artists to truly breakdown their creative process in some of the most popular songs in the world. 5 stars all the way
In-depth conversations with artists and how they crafted their music? Yes please!
Highly recommended for music nerds. 🤓
This podcast is the type of thing I want to hear for all of my favorite songs and artists. It’s such a great concept for music nerds and casual listeners alike. The editing, the interviews, and attention to detail set this show apart from others. And most importantly, it isn’t dumbed down. Hrishikesh gets deep into each song and the techniques and feelings used to create them in a way that is incredibly interesting and educational for me, as a musician. I’ve even used techniques I’ve heard from this podcast in my own music. Overall, fantastic stuff that everyone should at least give a trial run.
This is consistently one of my favorite podcasts around. So much great insight into the music for musicians and non-musicians alike.
Get to know the musician and their process for each of a remarkably diverse range of songs.
Hear so much about this for so long and finally listened. Cried through the first episode I heard. So deep and beautiful. Silly me for waiting so long.
Brilliant! I tend to stay away from behind-the-scenes type stuff, but this is one huge exception!
This truly changes the way I listen to music! I’m not a musician at all but listening to the artists talk about the process behind one of their songs is incredible. Not only that but I have lots of new artists to listen to thanks to Song Exploder.
It's impossible to listen to an episode and not fall in love with the song that is featured. The podcast is produced so beautifully. The format is perfect and the sound is stimulating. I end up playing the song on repeat after listening to an episode with new found interest and respect for the music!
I don't listen to every episode but so far I haven't been dissapointed by any of them. PLUS it gives me new music to explore I never would've found otherwise
I listen to this podcast in my car on my way to anywhere really, as well as at the gym or out for a run, etc. I love the concept! It’s all songs I already know and love and it makes me appreciate the artist even more. I also love getting a taste of the different personalities and perspectives! This sparks inspiration in me. Keep up the good work!!!
I can't believe how enjoyable this show is for music that I don't normally enjoy. Hrishi is a great host and listening to people who love what they do is often (although not always!) a good time. I am merely a music listening enthusiast, not an artist - this is a great way to learn more about the craft of writing and layering sounds

As a musician, I learn something from every episode. It has turned me onto bands I normally wouldn't have heard or followed otherwise. Hearing everybody's process, ideas, accidents.... it is amazing.
This is my favorite podcast. It is one that maximizes the medium—what better use of podcast than to feature music and story together? Music as a character. I love it. Twenty minutes is just right. The editing and audio clips from the songs are excellent. The musicians' takes are incredibly interesting. The full song at the end to wrap it up—wonderful. Please carry on.
So many songs made new again and so many more I never knew. Thankful.
I really enjoy how they break down the songs and thoroughly enjoy how the artists talk about the creative process.
Brilliant. I just wish there were more. Can’t wait for more people to discover this
If you make or listen to music you will love this podcast.
The best podcast out there. Insight into how an artist creates is a rare ans beautiful thing and this podcast captures it fantastically. I have felt much emotion while playing episodes of this podcast.
This podcast was what we all wanted all along but didnt realize we did!! Thanks for being the creative genius and making each song into a story
If you love music, you must listen to Song Exploder! Not only is it fascinating to hear the story behind the songs and then hear the song in full with richer context but every episode is its own rich sonic masterpiece
Love it, but it needs more diverse genres
If you love music and songwriting and production and creativity and artists and the artistic process, this podcast is absolutely mandatory. So good, and such an amazing opportunity to learn about new artists and new music from the inside out.
The host is intelligent and engaging, and the discussion of the process is fantastic, even if you aren't into the song. That being said, I have found so many great songs through this podcast. Love it!
I am amazed at the level of personal revelation that Mr. Hirway is able to elicit from musicians. Non-musicians get a glimpse of the dynamic interweaving of emotion, sound, and collaboration that ultimately results in a striking, haunting, or delightful songs. Unforgettable podcast.
Kinda depends on the artist, but when talking to a musician that I like, the show is super cool. See Courtney Barnet, Phantogram, Maggie Rogers and Aimee Man.
Consistently one of the most interesting, engaging and inspiring 20 minutes out there. Thank you for continuing to produce this with so much thought and care.
This is the coolest, most unique podcast I've ever heard. Even the artists I dislike engage me with their process.
That about says it! Great podcast that will give you new appreciation for songs and artists you love, and show you some great new ones. Songs are varied so you'll get some you don't like, which is good in its own right. As a hobby music maker in my youth it's great to remember some of the experience of creating music
I love that these episodes are short & sweet. Learning how artists create songs is very interesting, and the production is very well done. The artist list is excellent as well.
I'm new to the show, & am really enjoying it. Interesting & well produced, with no filler. The Björk episode has been a standout so far.
I absolutely love this podcast.
I had heard about this for months on a different podcast. I finally tried it and was blown away. One of the best podcasts I've ever heard. Fascinating content and great interviews.
Probably my favorite podcast I discovered this year. I'm now all caught up on every episode! I think it's in my top 3 podcasts overall and I only have maybe one thing I'd like to change. There's been a few episodes that have been kinda short sometimes and overall I'd love if the show went even more in depth sometimes. I might be in the minority though since that might drag the show down but either way it's a fantastic show.
I love this podcast! Innovative format and interesting insights. And great music!
This goes beyond the "two dudes talk" podcast genre into some amazing audio experiences. It makes me want to stop giving up on art. FAVORITE PODCAST!!!
Always interesting conversations with amazing musicians.
The artists are so open and detailed about their songs when interviewed by song exploder.
So glad to hear get an angle on a musician's process that no one else gets. Though we don't hear the interview side of things, Hrishikesh must ask amazing, evocative questions to get artists to really open up and so intimately discuss their work. Critically relevant artists, unmatched insight, and really top of the line production. You all are hitting a stride in truly excellent work, and I can't wait to see where it goes.
I like to play these podcasts on shuffle mode. I often end up liking songs I would have never imagined if I had not heard the backstory first. Songs I really liked already get an in-depth meaning after hearing the background. Excellent insight into the minds of musical artists.
Even if you don't know the band or the song, the podcast episodes are so well done they're interesting to listen to.
Cool podcast, very informative.
Behind the scenes details.
Song Exploder is filled with well produced and insightful looks into the process of popular and influential musicians. I recommend it to any musician who is looking for ideas and techniques to use for their own work!
This is a great show.
Great for anyone who is into music, songwriting or just getting into the heads of musical geniuses.
This is my favorite podcast - a well executed dive into what it looks & feels like to craft songs. So grateful, thank you!!!
I like the length of the podcast, the structure, variety, and how I discover new music. Will never stop listening!
I've ended up getting into several bands outside my usual wheelhouse because of this show. It's interesting to see that no matter what kind of music it is, the vast majority of the ideas come from tinkering. This show really argues against the myth of brief rushes of inspiration.
What a terrific idea, well executed. This is my new favorite podcast. Thanks.
I've always loved music but never been a musician myself and of course I married a musician and wished I could participate in the conversation more. This podcast has taught me to love songs I'd overlooked before and given me the language to talk about music and better appreciate it. 10/10
And other cliches about why this podcast is great. Stop reading reviews and listen.
Love the way this podcast breaks down songs into their elements, and gives you insight into the process behind building a song. Keep up the good work 😊
Just love listening to this. Would love to hear more tv/film explosions 👌🏾
One of my favorite podcasts. Great way to learn about artists and dig deep into the creative process with old favorites. Great work.
I don't understand why this podcast isn't ranked higher. It has the right length, format, and execution.
Artists provide step by step insight into their creative process. I may assign this for my classes at Berklee. Essential listening for musicians.
This podcast has given me a new respect and appreciation for musicians of all kinds. I love hearing their inspirations and what makes the songs special to them. Especially in genres I wouldn't normally listen to.
I loved Hrishi on West Wing Weekly and so tried Song Exploder. I feel so much more in tune with music after listening. It's almost like figuring out a puzzle. Thanks
Every episode reveals the craft and thoughtfulness of the musicians they feature. I lvoe heairng it broken down and then built back together. One of the most unique and affecting podcasts out there.
So great! It is like being a fly on the wall while your favorite artist writes your favorite song! 10/10 would listen again!
Super awesome way to look inside music, artists, and the process
A fantastic idea, and really well done. How much I like the episodes depends a lot on how much I end up liking the song, but there's never been a song I've liked less after listening. Really awesome.
This is the best music podcast that I've heard. It is fascinating the hear what goes into making a song as told by the creator. I've gained a new appreciation for some songs and musicians that I didn't even like before hearing them talk about their approach.
Really amazing show for music lovers. Once you listen to it, your favorite songs sound even better!
Absolutely love this podcast and the music featured. Thanks!
Really interesting to hear the artist strip down the song. You notice tiny intricacies on sofa you never heard the first time.
If you really love music, and are amazed by the art, appreciate the creative effort, and want to know more how they come together ... subscribe! One of the best podcasts ever!
This is one of my favorite podcasts. I love the chance to see behind the curtain, to understand the thought processes and hear the different layers of great songs keep up the good work!
If you're into music and how it's constructed, Song Exploder is amazing. The host invites artists to deconstruct their songs into their parts, talk about the origins of the songs, and tell stories about their creation. I'm addicted to this podcast.
I recently discovered this podcast and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Obviously, with so much riding on the songwriter/composers, enjoyment depends on how well they break down their experience and any connection (if any) the listener has to the music. Episodes dive right in and move along quickly, so there's not a lot of wasted time. I suspect that I'll be personally selective about which episodes feature an artist/song I enjoy, and I'm okay with that. However, the podcast would be a great way to discover new/different music, so if time allows, I'll go back and listen to others. For those reasons, I really do recommend listening!
Such a great podcast. Delves deeply into how songs are written and records are made. Hirway chooses songs and music across many genres. I've heard so many artists I might never have heard otherwise.
Anyone who likes music should listen to this.
If you like hearing HOW artists wrote songs, stop immediately and listen. Only 4 stars because i only found a few artists that I was interested in.
As a songwriter, this podcast is invaluable! & as a music fan, this podcast is just legendary. All I can say is thank you for doing this & I can only hope to have the opportunity to be on the show someday soon. If you're reading this, just choose an episode & listen!
Discovered this podcast today, it's so so so good. What a great idea for a podcast. So happy to have discovered it. It's edited so nicely, and I find it so informative, even on songs/artists that I might not be into. Love the length of it, it's not too long.
It’s funny to listen to people talk about music; some songs come about as if an epiphany, others are worked at and changed over time. It just goes to show that every song has a story beyond the lyrical message. I started listening to Song Exploder due to having already fallen in love with the West Wing Weekly. With the professionalism and passion the host presents on that show, I thought I’d try this one. I’m not a huge fan of music as a thing to be obsessed over. This show is perfect for a casual fan or professional in the industry, it gives us insight into how some songs create themselves and find life in the minds of the creators. Even songs I don’t care for, I still love listening to the stories behind them. There are episodes for every genre. Standouts for me are those based in film; especially the recent La La Land and Arrival episodes. Congratulations on 100 episodes!
This podcast is as well produced as the songs that it features. Absolutely fascinating for non-music folks like me.
We want them back!
Subscribing to this podcast will make you listen to music in an entirely new way. Don't tell Malina but this podcast is better.
Whether you know the songs at all, well or not at all this is a great listen. Always interesting and enjoyable as you hear how artists break down their songs.
Great podcast. I started with three episodes downloaded and subscribed halfway through the Murphys "Blood" episode. Would you consider doing an episode on the Hilltop Hoods?
Can't wait for the next episode!
Wandered over after months of listening to The West Wing Weekly Podcast. Song Exploder is an in-depth look at the creation of music, with lots of behind-the-scenes tidbits that pulled me into the world of some of my favorite songs. Very glad I checked it out! Nice work, Hrishi :)
Perfect focus on the artist and the creative process. Even if you don't know the artist for an episode, totally worth the listen.
Look no further. Love hearing how songs I know & love came together and also songs new to me.
It's helpful to hear new music and understand how a song came together. I appreciate that it takes work. Sometimes I wish there were songs explained that are more mainstream but I appreciate learning about artists and songs that are outside my listening regularity. Keep it up
Song Exploder is one of the shows I refresh pretty regularly, and I'd say it's interesting most of the time. I admit, I genuinely hadn't put a lot of thought into music before it, and I really enjoy their bite-sized pieces that cover an incredible breadth of creative processes.
I'm glad Radiotopia introduced me to this. Outside my normal range of podcasts. Well produced and interesting. Worth the time.
I love this podcast - even episodes about songs I haven't heard. I don't have much of a music background but love hearing about the details and thought process behind each song. Every episode gives unique insight and the podcast is put together really well. Also, I love Hrishi's Hrecaps on TWWW and want more!
Loved the Postal Service Episode, but I am really here for the Hrinopses.
Song Exploder is gratifying and pleasantly brief. It perfectly scratches my itch to know more background of songs, without veering into paltry Behind the Music territory. Listen.
This is such a great podcast. It has litterally changed the way I hear music. I have found myself listening to songs that I have loved for years with new ears and finding stuff that I never realized was there.
Generally I'm a huge fan of this show, but what's the deal with ignoring the fact that the Dropkick Murphys song "Blood" was note by note identical to Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire"? I get and support the idea of artistic license, but it seems like this stealing/borrowing should at least have been addressed in the interview. Seriously, that's all I hear when I hear this song.
Even with high-energy songs, this podcast has a nice, soothing effect when the artists break down their songs. I like the way it is edited. I really feel like the artist is telling me a personal story. It's also cool way to discover songs, and I have more appreciation of songs I've heard, that I may or may not have liked, after understanding the creative process of one song or just what the artists go through. It's also quite refreshing compared to many other podcasts that have the Q&A talk show format.
I love the breakdown aspect, and the explnations are usually well done by the artist. Hrishikesh knows what to ask and went to leave the door open. I just wish there were more songs I actually liked. So far of over 90 episodes I only like the actual song enough to listen to it again maybe 15% of the time.
It's about creators creating and Song Exploder lets us in on the process in this intimate, sonically fascinating podcast.
I came over from The West Wing Weekly podcast. I had never heard of most of the artists featured, but that didn't take away from how brilliantly each one disected their song and explained why each technical part was necessary. It's a wonderful peek inside the mind of artists -- something so foreign to me it's like another language entirely. Thanks Hrishi! (Also, do the thing Josh dared you to do on TWWW. C'mon. It'll be fun)
A huge thanks to Joshua Malina for turning me onto this amazing podcast! 5 Stars!
Move the pod-I enjoy music in a whole new way now because of this podcast!
Love this kind of analysis. Great podcast if you love music or enjoy listening to smart people.
Breaking down the newest tracks is not only a great idea, but the best idea! The host is so good at getting the musicians to open up talk about what makes their song tick..? There should be a music pun there. Anyway. The perfect companion to Apple Music//Spotify//or whatever you're using these days.
Hrishi is like no other in his music knowledge, talent, appreciation of other artists, and of course, his irresistible charm.
Totally great for anyone who likes hearing about the act of creating music.
Fingers crossed for more frequent episodes and songs I actually enjoy
I’ve been listening to an episode every morning for weeks now. As a fellow songwriter, hearing insights into other’s creativity is very inspiring. Thank you!
I've been listening to this podcast since the beginning but use PocketCasts and haven't gotten around to installing iTunes until now. It's been a great trip following the popularity of your podcast. Congratulations on all your success! This might be the most important podcast for an up-and-coming musician to listen to if he/she wants to really understand the jargon, technology, and creative process of creating musical art by the artist themselves. Well done and thank you! .
Even for songs you don't know, hearing about the creative process & logistics of the music business is interesting & entertaining.
Check it out - award winning podcast! Hrishikesh Hirway is the best!
Amazing work. Beautifully recorded and mixed, and a joy to listen to even if I didn't know/like the musician or music before hand.
Witty and brilliant
i enjoy the insight on some of my favorite artists breaking down the songs, complete with listens to the stems and stories that have a positive impact on how i listen to the song via a look into the artist’s mind!
Not just saying this so Hrishi will write more synopses for TWWW (stay strong... you don't need MORE work!)- this podcast is compelling. I'm glad I just came to it now so that I've got lots to binge!
Love Hrishikesh Hirway thoughful questions.
How to write songs; how to develop ideas; and how to have fun with making music...this is as close as I'll get to hanging out with some of my fav musicians. And that's totally cool.
I miss his summaries!
Just kidding! It's a great podcast...love the concept
I found this podcast after starting another last year with Hrishi, TWWW. I tried this podcast because I really liked Hrishi on the other. Though I enjoy music, I'm no musician and can be limited to the categories to which I listen but I love the way the music is broken down and discussed. Truly excellent.
Love love LOVE this podcast. Not only am I getting a behind-the-scenes look at songs I love, but I'm also getting turned onto other songs I didn't think I'd love. Something about hearing the details has inspired me to listen to some of these songs I'd otherwise pass over.
The show is produced exceptionally well for a one-man operation. It's refreshing how the host is silent for the majority of the show. The mix of guests is eclectic, but the music is sometimes unpleasant to my taste. Still interesting.
Love the deconstruction of a song by the artist.
Simply brilliant - I adore listening to each episode. Will you consider doing more with Grimes? I hope so. Or Bloodpop??
It's rare that you get such a personal look into the creation of some of your favorite songs. The artists do an amazing job of explaining the songwriting process and making you feel like you are a part of something. The soundmixing and producing for this podcast are also incredibly well done. Can't stop listening!
Everything about this podcast is perfect. The only way it could be improved is if more people do this, so theres more artists and more songs to learn about. They always offer new insights into songs, but they also importantly offer inspiration into creating music or my daily life in ways I never expected
If you are an artist or simply love learning then this podcast will be your new brain candy! It focuses on the process of how songs get made; the behind the scenes. It humanizes the creators and hrishi does a great job with facilitating the conversation. Highly recommend
It is lovey to understand what goes into making art of any kind, and the making of music, the art I understand the least, pleases me the most.
Hrishikesh Hirway is far and away one of our best podcast hosts. Lively, inviting, and informative, his presence is felt even when he's audibly absent conducting the interviews here. You won't find a better podcast to discover and learn about music.
Wonderful podcast with an equally wonderful host!
It doesn't get better than this if you want to swim further into the ocean of some of your favorite muscians
I look forward to this one, love to see it in my notifications. The content is always informative and entertaining. You do not have to love the song to appreciate the glimpse into the creative process.
Keep this going forever, please... listening to an artist describe the origin and process of song writing and music-making is a true joy. A peek behind the aural curtain.
I downloaded some episode when this podcast first started at a recommendation of Roman Mars and 99% Invisable. This is a great concept of deconstructing the music. Unfortunately, other than the host, who really has heard or cared about this untalented so-called artists and their tuneless schlock? Who wants to hear about music most people would iTunes Sample Stop or Pandora-Skip 2 seconds in? Perhaps if the host selected more familiar (read successful) songwriters and muscians, this show would be more engaging.
I listen to a lot of podcasts. I wasn't sure if i would like this one because-- even though I love music-- I'm not a musician. However, it's so interesting hearing about the musicians creative processes and completely applicable to any art form. I also have learned about SO MUCH good music of all types and from a diverse set of makers. AMAZING podcast😊✌️
Brilliant format. I've learned so much about the craft of contemporary music making from this podcast. Even when the song is not one I would normally choose to listen to, it's riveting air. It's hepled me get genres I barely tolerated, never mind understood, and introduced me to some of my favorite music ever. On Nov. 9th, I deleted all four politics podcasts I'd been listening to - and it's Song Exploder that has been keeping me sane.
This is an example of a good idea, executed very well. Please keep new shows coming.
Like finding a new best friend to trade music secrets with. Listened to all of these in a solo road trip today and couldn't have been happier. Thank you for making my day - I can't wait for more!
I love the concept of the show and every episode does not disappoint. So well done.
Never dissapoints. Great interviews, has turned me on to many bands I've not heard of before.
This show features wonderful little interviews with artists about the thing they care most about: putting together their music. I really like getting a sense for how they decided to layer or replace elements, and getting a peek at how much the creative process can differ between bands. Also the show is just the right length. In and out, and I'm ready for the next one. Start with a few songs you know and go on from there!
Picked this up on a random recommendation and it's such a delightful and insightful look (well, listen) on how different song writers approach the craft. Highly recommended!
Every time I listen to this podcast, I have a greater appreciation for music and musicians. It's great and a dream for music lovers everywhere.
It doesn't matter what genre is being covered, I'm addicted to how all music is broken down in this podcast. Hrishi is great at letting the artist have the spotlight and tell their story. Love, love, love!
Fantastic concept, but often find myself wishing for just a little bit more.
This is one of the better concepts I have seen for music. This pod shows a side of the music writing process that we dont normally get to see
Even artists and songs I don't care for I wind up liking a little more after this show.
When it's a genre or artist you like this podcast is killer but when it's something you don't particularly like it's gonna bore you.
If you love music: listen to this
Whether you love the song or not, it's fun to hear the creative proccess happened. If you like music and how music is made, this podcast is for you.
I eagerly await the release of each new episode.
Has introduced me to a lot of new bands and songwriters, as well as the creative process. I listen to music differently now - for the better!
A great show that really helps you understand how much work goes into producing music. And the variety of music that he covers is a wonderful way of discovering new stuff!
As a songwriter, I can't get enough of hearing others' process on this podcast. I love hearing songs that I know and love broken down, and I also really appreciate hearing new songs. This show has exposed me to so many types of music I probably would never have heard on my own, but hearing the work and passion going into them gives me a huge appreciation even if a song wouldn't be to my usual taste. Hrishikesh's style is unobtrusive and lets the artists shine on their own. This show is beautifully produced, judiciously edited, and always leaves me wanting more. I've told every musician friend I know to listen. Thank you!
I love this podcast series so so so much!! Thank you for everything; it's really so incredible to be able to listen to artists dissecting their own songs!! Thank you thank you
A brilliant concept, masterfully carried out.
I'm not a musician or an artist, but I really enjoy each episode's quick glimpse into the multitude of approaches to creating music. I've really enjoyed hearing both familiar and unfamiliar songs broken apart as well as the artists' journey from mood/riff/beat/etc to the finished product.
This show <3 <3 <3 Inspiring to listen to artists talk about their work. Song Exploder helps make the hard work of embarking upon the journey of crafting great songs seem a little less out of reach. Plenty of moments that were just accidents or experiments are in your favorite songs! That's cool!
I love hearing the behind-the-scenes deconstruction of music in general so this show is right up my alley. I only wish the episodes were longer since I'm sure there are more stories to tell, but I enjoy its brevity at the same time. Splendid podcast for music nerds or people who just want to hear more about very good songs.
An excelled podcast where artists deconstruct their songs. Illuminating! Wonderful!
This show is a great peek into the creative world. I am not a creative by trade, but find this show inspires me and deepens my love for music. Thank you for existing!
listened to 4 eps so far, favorites were Them Changes by Thundercat and Time to Pretend by MGMT
You have baths featured on an episode? Automatic 5 stars bc good music. Heard about your cast on cracked and so glad someone actually took the initiative to delve into some awesome artists' tracks. THANK YOU!
I have really enjoyed this podcast, and it just keeps getting better. I came for a U2 episode, but quickly caught up on the rest and really look forward to new shows. I even enjoy the episodes with songs I'm not familiar with, or wouldn't typically like their music or song, but the interviews and the process is so interesting, I never fail to enjoy it and the music. Good work!
Great variety and each podcast is a nice length!!
for the show
This podcast is well executed, well made, and highly enjoyable. I have not only found new music that I love, but also have a renewed love for music I had already heard. The in-depth detail that I learn about each song is exactly what music lovers will like about this podcast.
I fall in love with a new song every time
Song Exploder is one of the most interesting podcasts I have ever listened to regarding music. Each episode goes deep into a song and gives one a glimpse into a world not often seen. If you dig music and the creative process, this podcast is for you. Top notch audio quality and excellently hosted.
Provided a fresh take on music appreciation. Might be most enjoyable to those to understand the process on a personal level. For those like me who are used to just enjoying the end product, the lingo and nitty gritty details are sometimes over my head or more than I need. Still a very awesome podcast!
The complexity of composition and arrangement surprised me. I knew not all songs were an artist, a guitar or piano and a half an hour, but I never imagined what I have learned from hearing a song exploded. I listen to some of my music in a different way now, finding greater depth. I also enjoy hearing a musician's spoken voice and getting a small peek at who the person is.
This show is so amazing. I'm a poet, and I love listening to artists in another genre talk about their process. It's so inspiring.
This is my favorite podcast next to This American Life. I love this podcast because of the idea. I also love that the artists themselves talk about their songs.
All my favorite bands and artists on here talking about how they made their songs... A dream come true
The way the artist deconstructs their process is great. Every method is different, and even for artists and/or songs I don't like, it's very interesting to see how the process works
I couldn't have dreamed up a much better idea for a podcast than this one. The fact that he is able to get the actual artists on to discuss their inspirations and process, and the individual tracks to break down the parts just makes it even more amazing. I really can't come up with a complaint about it, unless it's that not every single song is one from my own collection ;)
What a great podcast
I'm more interested in the episodes about artists I know, but even when I don't, they're still well done.
It is rare for a niche podcast to get me to listen to every single episode when you account for all the different variations out there. Song Exploder breaks that mold. Even if I don’t listen to or have heard the artist before, it’s required listening. Incredibly insightful, this is one of the best “deep dive” podcasts out there.
...try Song Exploder! In recommending this podcast, I’m anticipating that if you like taking one thing apart (the history of design) you might like taking something else apart (songs) to identify the moving parts and how they work. Host Hrishikesh Hirway interviews musicians and has them take him step by step through the making and editing of their music – search by artist, pick a song you already like, and enjoy the analytic breakdown.
My math teacher recommended this podcast to me the other day and I love it. He told me that the guy who makes this podcast was his college roommate. Regardless, this is awesome.
This podcast is on a short list of things that truly inspire me to think more deeply about the world, and they way I do things. Plus i get hipped to some new bands I otherwise might have missed.
Loved the episode with the National.
One of the most interesting podcast formats ever. Quite honestly one of the coolest shows, anywhere!
Such a beautiful idea for a podcast. Keep exploding!
Great variety. Great production. Love that the host takes a back seat and lets the songwriters and the stems do the talking.
So great to hear these artists talk about their process!
I absolutely love this show. Excellent study of a single song by the creators themselves. Genius. I am being introduced to new artists I wouldn't normally seek out. Grateful for what's happening in the podcast world and love that it's impacting our exposure to art.
A great idea executed perfectly. Even songs I wouldn't normally listen to are extremely interesting when "exploded". I especially like the movie and tv theme episodes.
This is the only podcast that I cannot hardly wait for the next episode to drop. It's amazing how inspirational a song breakdown can be to someone like myself who is musical, but not a creator… Yet. This podcast makes me want to make music. I would say that marks the success of a podcast.
And recommend it without hesitation to anyone looking for a new show to listen too. Fascinating.
Love, love, love this podcast. Even if it’s a song (or songwriter) I don’t particularly like, it’s always good. I always learn something. These are the deepest darkest secrets of songwriting - shared by the best songwriters writing today. Awesome stuff!
I’m a huge “process” person - i love seeing where things come from, how they develop and evolve, and how they take their final shape. I have really loved each episode of Song Exploder, as the artists break apart and dive into their processes that helped make the final product. I really appreciate the variety of genres Hrishikesh Airway presents. Great work!
It is very well put together. One of my favorites. Request that you get Chris Martin on here. Or Foster the People
Gives my music experience a. New depth
I've been a longtime musician and songwriter, and I've had conversations with a lot of friends about their processes, but never have I had a conversation that literally pulled it apart in this way. Brilliant idea, and awesome execution. Better yet, this has introduced me to bands and music I wouldn't normally listen to and have since fallen in love with.
This is everything.
Just listen to it man
This is the best use of the podcast format- so cool.
This is one of those ideas that is so great that it makes you wish you'd thought of it. Musicians taking apart their songs and showing you how they work? That's SO cool. And the way the show is edited, plus the host's smooth, soothing voice, really gives it a unique sound. It's unlike anything else out there.
I'm a musician, former classical audio engineer, and sound designer for film. Song Exploder is far and away the best sounding and most carefully sonically constructed podcast out there. I find myself listening to episodes over and over again. I don't do that with any other podcast. If you are a musician, or simply have an interest in music or sound – do yourself a favor and listen to this podcast. I do wish they would do an episode with Chad VanGaalen, though. Maybe "Frozen Paradise." How about it?
Awesome idea for a podcast! As musician, this podcast is incredibly informative and inspiring. I only wish the episodes were longer!
If you like music, don't sleep on this show. Listening to the breakdowns is fascinating whether no matter the artist or genre. Songs I'd never have in my library are often the most fascinating episodes.
As a musician, I love hearing people’s writing processes. Everyone comes at it differently and it’s always amazing.
An amazing way to discover new music and to glimpse the universe behind every song out there.
Just found your show today from an episode of The Cracked Podcast. Been bing listening all day and this is my absolute favorite show. From the mix to the timing and pace, to the interview subjects. Brilliant show.
The idea is great, the execution is perfect... it's really wonderful getting a behind the scenes look at some of my favorite songs, as well as learning about songs that I have never heard of. I am thrilled that this exists.
I recently started listening to the podcast and easily listened to a dozen episodes in a row! As a musician, this podcast is so incredibly enjoyable, inspiring, and interesting! I want to hear more from jazz and funk musicians!!
Really loving this podcast. I am playing catch up and it’s great! Thanks for doing this, super interesting and fun. Keep up the great work!
Hrishikesh Hirway can get a stunning amount of information out of artists. This is always a must-listen.
I love this podcast. I look forward to every new episode. It has helped me to appreciate new genres of music and opened my blind eyes to a world I never knew I wished to appreciate more. Thank you sincerely for doing what you have done, Mr. Hirway. You have helped to improve the quality of my life.
Song Exploder is one of my top 3 favorite podcasts, period. Hrishikesh Hirway has crafted a meditation on the creative process that is both succinct and expansive, as it follows a band or an individual musician’s song from seed of an idea to completed track. Hirway’s genius is to draw out of the artist their process for creating art, all the while getting out of the way by keeping his questions out of the final edit. What results is always and thought-provoking, often haunting, window into the minds of creative people as they strive to make something worthwhile to themselves (and to others). You do not have to be a musician to appreciate this podcast. A critique I could imagine someone leveling might be that knowing 'how the sausage is made’ might remove the magic from the music, but I think this podcast actually adds more magic: you get to see a song appear out of nowhere, abra cadabra! Kudos to Hrishi for doing something so amazing.
Great idea & very well executed. I have been enjoying this podcast immensely!
I love the selection of artists, the interview format -- including playing the track behind the interview -- and the track breakdown from the artists' creative-process point-of-view. If only there was time to do this for every great band and every great song!
This podcast has made me appreciate the music I’ve been listening to, as well as introduced me to new artists. There’s something about hearing their process and finally hearing the song in its entirety adds so much to the song. Thanks for making such a rad podcast!
This provides a fantastic peak into the creative process behind musical synthesis. I'm always happy to see a new episode up.
Oh, I love Song Exploder so much. Hrishikesh is clearly an amazing interviewer, as reflected in the way he gets musicians to open up and break down the component parts of music they have made. I love the editing of the show and the way it is both so visceral/sensual and also so highly intellectual. It’s so personal, in the voices and stories, but also so technical, in the incredible artistry, musical mastery, and critical analysis on display. Because of the editing, it often comes out seeming like the artist is just recounting the story in isolation, but I strongly believe that Hrishikesh is too self-effacing and that he's something of an artist himself in the way he engages with the artists and stitches everything together. Also, he has an amazing radio [podcast] voice. I hope he’ll find more ways to be a vocal part of the storytelling at some point that don't feel like compromising on the beautiful format he’s come to thus far. This podcast has turned me on to music I never would have listened to otherwise and given me deep appreciation for songs in genres I usually have no interest in. When the show first began, I wished that there could be more female artists featured, but that’s actually gotten much better in recent months and I think I read that Hrisikesh wants to have gender parity in new episodes going forward, which is GREAT. Basically, this is just a drop-dead amazing podcast/aural and mental experience. Here are a few standout episodes, although I honestly don't think I've ever heard a bad one: Daedalus, "Experience" Jeff Beal, "House of Cards (Main Title Theme)" The Long Winters, "The Commander Thinks Aloud" How to Dress Well, "Pour Cyril” The Magnetic Fields, “Andrew in Drag” Chet Faker, “Gold” Natalia Lafourcade, “Hasta La Raiz” Bjork, “Stonemilker"
What else can be said? Constantly exceeding expectations. (Maybe one of these days I’ll raise them, but I keep thinking I already have…)
This podcast needs to be in you subscriptions if you enjoy popular music.
Quite seriously, this is my favorite podcast. I learn so much about music I love and music I've never heard of. You'll listen to the songs in such a different way after hearing the artists themselves explain their work. I love every episode!
This podcast is so worthwhile. It’s great to hear musicians talk about the creation of their songs. Whether it’s technical, the process, the inspiration or whatever. Always a good listen, done in the right amount of time, and especially enjoy hearing the exploded song “in its entirety”.
He is brilliant in letting us in to the creative process and music production of so many great artists! I get giddy every time I see it drop into my podcast queue.
Dissecting a song track by track is such an interesting way into the mind of a recording artist. Also, Hrishikesh is far ahead of me in his music awareness, so Song Exploder ends up being one of my guides to new music as well.
Everything about this podcast is perfect. Hrishikesh executes Occham’s Razor to his chosen subject with a fine degree of craft and detail. Song Exploder is the right length, delivers only the best information, without any chaff or filler, and better yet, you’re not dealing with a host who loves the sound of his own voice. In fact, he barely talks during each episode, leaving the listener to an intimate portrayal of songwriting from the perspective of the originating craftspeople. Whether you’re a fan of the music or not, every episode is a ‘must-listen’ with pearls of wisdom in each narrative.
I love hearing musicians break down certain songs - gives great insight into their process, but also sheds light on the “lack of” mystery behind it all. Hopefully this helps break down any remaining barriers for other aspiring musicians yet to come...
I cannot get enough of this show
I think the most interesting thing about this podcast is that I am learning what it takes to actually make one song at the same time learning about cool new bands/musicians i'd never heard of.
Very high quality podcast, a delight to my ears.
There's no program out there in any format that shows you what it's like to create, compose, and most importantly record a song. These interviews should eventually end up in the national archives at Smithsonian. And the way the interviewer allows the musicians to speak for themselves is really innovative and ingenious. This podcast never let you down
This pod is and absolute must download for any song enthusiast or music lover.
This is a fantastic look at how songs are made by a fantastical host. I've been a fan of Hrishikesh Hirway since he recorded put out weird electronic folk pop songs on a hardcore punk record label under the name "the One AM Radio". That sort of eclecticism is still present in this new show, where he's already dissected pop songs, indie classics, metalcore, and much more. The breadth of his taste is expansive, and the show is impeccably produced.
Song Exploder is one of my favourite podcasts. As a music-lover and musician it is always fascinating to hear how pieces of music come together. Every artist has their own process and I've learned so much listening to this show each week. Giving musicians and composers the microphone to talk through their music is such an excellent concept and Hrishikesh does a great job identifying and interviewing artists, and splicing up music and voice to create short, interesting narratives each week. Long enough but not too long. I appreciate the range of music that is featured. Music choice obviously a very important part of making this podcast attractive to current and future audiences. With just one song a week though, it can be hit or miss unless you are a music geek or interested in how music works. Definitely the more recent music choices have been less obscure with current hits and bigger names potentially in an effort to draw more audiences. Some ideas for the future of this fantastic podcast might be to include more music every week, more live events, new collaborations or multiple artist discussions, music courses/trainings and greater listener involvement. Also, I appreciate that Hrishikesh puts the musicians and the music in the spotlight and himself in the background. That said, if he shined the spotlight in both directions, he may create a reason for people to listen in each week despite the music selection. That being because of his personality, knowledge and fascinating interviews.
This podcast is fantastic & covers some of my favorite songs/artists along with artists Im glad to have discovered! Love it!
As I study music composition, it’s very useful to hear the individual parts of themes (like House of Cards) and learn how they function as a whole. Also, I love the music selection, most of which I’m not very familiar with, but really enjoy. My only regret is that I knew about this podcast sooner, seeing Alexandre Desplat is on one episode, and I had an assignment to replicate his style.
Love this podcast and how it brings me to appreciate music I would have never heard otherwise. Great for late night walks.
Was referred by a cd baby podcast... Good stuff!!
Very well done, incredibly informative, and beautiful. I love how the podcast describes the creative process for each musician interviewed.
This show is a bit sized nugget of awesome.
I first found out about Song Exploder from a Reply All crossover episode and have been a subscriber ever since. As someone who loves music and is an artist, I am interested in the process of creation and I get to hear musicians describe their processes, as well as hear about awesome new music I would never have found. The host is wonderful too!
In a space that's meant mostly for people to talk, Song Exploder is unique. There's really not any other podcast that I've heard of that blends conversations and music together. My biggest gripe is that I wish there were more episodes, more often and that there was a bit more variety of music.
This is a great podcast to play in the background while you're working. Love how it alternates between interviews and songs. Each episode is the perfect length to hold your interest. I've unknowingly listening to ~20 episodes in a row. They flow so well.
Love to hear the behind the scenes (struggles and inspirations). And kudos for featuring Natalia Lafourcade
My absolute favorite podcast. I look forward to it and usually listen to each episode multiple times. Thank you! Love it. Love telling my friends about it.
This podcast subtly illustrates Hrishikesh Hirway's remarkable talent for delving to the core of the artistic method. His choice to withdraw his own spoken portion of the interview allows the listener to have intimate moment after moment with an artist and their thoughts. This podcast is a gift to anyone passionate about music. Absolutely phenomenal work!
You will never listen to these songs the same way again. This show is brilliant!
Hrishikesh nails the audio editing, and his guests are fantastic. Setting the standard.
Manages to expertly mix the technical and creative processes that create the songs of the moment and classics. Wonderful podcast. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys storytelling or music.
A new classic. I have heard many podcasts, and this stands out as original and unique. I not only have heard my favorite musicians deconstruct their songs, but have discovered many great artists as well. I suspect this podcast will be going strong years from now and that many others will try to imitate the style in the future.
I love song exploder because it's a way to peer into the creative process in the "flesh" from the perspective of brilliant artists. If you do anything creative you'll be better for having subscribed to sing exploder.
I was talking to my brother about how I love podcasts, but if I don’t listen to enough music in a day I get sad. I walk to work, and I love listening to music as I go. My brother said wait - I know a podcast about music that also plays the song in the end. He explained what this was and I was immediately excited. I listened to my first episode and basically freaked out. It could not have been more perfect. I love music, and I have always been curious about artists’ thought processes. It’s deeply touching to find out that what an artist was hoping to convey with a lyric or particular sound is exactly what you get out of the song. It’s so great listening to episodes about songs I already know, and then it’s awesome to hear something completely new and find a new favorite song for my repertoire. Thank you so much for this show.
Addicting and interesting!! I look forward to it everyday!!
Song Exploder gets right to the point, and each episode is seamless. 100% good stuff, carefully selected & delivered to your ears. You’ll never look at these songs the same way again.
I listen to a lot of podcasts, but I'm most excited when a new episode of song exploder comes out. The music is always something different and exciting. The artists and composers come from a huge variety of music genres like hip hop, noise bands, film scores, pop, indie, television, etc. The stories are enthralling. (I still get a little emotional when I hear the commander thinks aloud.) All in all amazing podcast. You won't regret listening to it!
Perfect podcast to just listen and absorb music from people who love to make music. It doesn't matter what genres you like, with the variety of artists Song Exploder has been getting you will absolutely find something you love as well as finding new things to listen to. Please please please give this a shot.
Love this - I love the structure of listening to bits and pieces then getting the full song after learning about the artist’s process. Great. Great. Great.
Song Exploder is a podcast that will open your ears up to the details of the music you love (or even just like). Ranging across genres, I've been exposed to new music and reintroduced to songs I thought I knew.
Found song exploder when they did the theme song for Reply All. Honestly haven't heard of most of the songs he does, but somehow end up loving them all. Totally must listen to!!!
Love the show and the concept. Please please please make an episode with Nick Diamonds about his song Bohemian Grove!!!!
It's fun to hear from such a wide variety of creative and personality types, especially from genres I don't normally gravitate to. My only wish is that it was longer! Would love to hear more about the process of writing and recording these tunes.
What a fantastically enlightened approach to connecting musicians with music heads! I'm a singer songwriter myself, and hearing different artists process is like having a secret weapon.
So interesting to hear the process behind these songs. Makes me want to write music again.
Hearing the artist break down their music track by track is fascinating, and the guests are great - I’ve already found new music I love from listening!
I have never considered myself a music-lover, but this podcast makes all different kinds of music appealing by telling the stories behind the lyrics and music.
I absolutely love this podcast. Even if it's not a music style I'm into or a band I've heard of, listening to the variety of creative processes is interesting and inspirational.
This show is pretty awesome. I love music but I'm sure even if you don't you'll love the show. Keep up the awesome work!!!
Great exposure to music outside of my usual preferences. Seeing how it comes together gives me a new appreciation for all genres.
I'm not always interested in the genres of music discussed, which means this show is wonderfully thorough with its coverage. No matter the subject, I enjoy the episode. The show's too smart for me to feel any other way.
Love this podcast, it does an excellent job of giving us a peak behind the creative process with some of the biggest and smallest names in the industry. Great choices of guests!
Honestly so freakin cool! I love learning about the process behind making different songs :)
Awesome deconstruction of pop music song writing process. Brilliant idea and so well-done.
This is my favorite podcast. I love seeing behind the scenes of the creative process and Hrishikesh does such a tasteful job of putting the show together. It's fascinating to see how these essential songs came about, sometimes with incredible intent, sometimes as a happy accident. It always gets me inspired and ready to make music. Do yourself a favor and check it out!
Found this podcast via 'Reply All' and love it. Such a great view into the mechanics and soul of a song. Every episode has hooked me! Great Podcast!
This is a must for music lovers. I love hearing the pieces of the song first and then hearing it in full, it adds all of the depth and the weight. Thank you!
Song Exploder is so perfect, I love hearing the background stories behind the songs and the isolation of their different layers. I have gained many new favorite artists due to this podcast, and have fallen even more in love with the bands I know that are featured.
I love this podcast. The music is super diverse but the format is very well done.
Absolutely incredible podcast! One of the best out there by far. This is the perfect podcast for music lovers and those who want to hear about the magic behind the music. I've listened to all the episodes and even relistened to a few of my favorites. Can't wait to hear what comes next!!
I've been searching for a podcast like this and song exploder delivers!
A once hidden gem of beautifully crafted sounds loved by many now. A must subscribe.
Interesting podcast that helps reveal the workings of how musicians put things together. Well produced.
As a person who can barely tell what instrument is playing in any given part of a song, this is fascinating.
A fascinating look into the work of composing music. As someone that loves music and wishes I could create it, this show sheds light on the magic and mystery of music.
I like this podcast enough to rate and review it on iTunes, even though I don't use iTunes. That's how much I like it.
I love this podcast! It’s so interesting to hear what goes into making these songs. You’d think the story behind the lyrics would be the juicy bit, but it’s actually the instrumentation that’s most fascinating (I say this as someone who can’t play any instruments). They have a great mix of super huge names (U2) and indie artists.
Great inspiration for musician everywhere in all genres
Great podcast! As a musician my self I always wonder how other artist make music
Such a great podcast. Excited to hear every episode that comes out. Thank you for making this.
Favorite podcast by far.
I love hearing all the pieces of the song come together! Especially composers for film since there is usually so much going on. Keep up the great work!
This is such an enjoyable podcast to listen to. I love origin stories and the way this is edited is brilliant. I'm loving what I'm hearing! And buying the music out of shear appreciation.
I am just listen to the Game of Thrones episode, and I really think this is the best "interview" show I've listen on iTune.
A fun, intelligent, and listenable podcast with great guests. Love it.
This podcast is one of my top 5 favorites along with RadioLab, TAL, Keith and the Girl, and 99% Invisible. It's the perfect length and a showcase of such interesting pieces of music. Subscribe, you'll be so glad you did.
I discovered Song Exploder through 99 PI and it's quickly become a favorite. I don't love every song or band they feature, though that sometimes will change by the end and I've discovered a few new gems. But chills! -- good ones -- from every episode. Well produced podcast, and fascinating insights into music making.
Cool idea & interesting guests!
Consistently amazing stories that deepen my understanding of recorded music and artistic choices. Each week there is a breakdown of all of the choices that went into a single song by an artist and then the song is played. It humanizes musicians in a way that makes their accomplishments even more impressive. It’s a must listen for me every week. The quickest way to full fulfillment of your soul.
I don’t often think about how much time, effort, and talent goes into the songs that I hear every day. They often just make up part of the background. Song Exploder deconstructs songs layer by layer so you can hear the individual instruments and voices that work together to produce the whole. This podcast will give you a new appreciation for the art and craft of music.
But better… Apart from introducing me to new music, there’s the added benefit of hearing the small nuances, choices, and secret details left by the artists themselves. For musicians and listeners alike, this is a great podcast.
I’m not a big musician. I played a little bass in high school and college, but sold my guitar for rent one month. But, even with my limited musical vocabulary, Song Exploder is among my favorite podcasts. It’s inspiring to listen to people talk about their passions. Especially so when they’re talking about passions around creation. That’s exactly what the podcast is. Add to it that the host is eloquent and asks very thoughtful questions, and you have the makings of a really great show.
If you have any interest in music, I think you'll enjoy this show. As soon as I heard one episode, I immediately started from the beginning and enjoyed every show.
Finally a really well done, original podcast about music. Pitch is also good, but SE is by far my favorite.
Hearing artists talk about their process is fascinating. This is a great podcast for “seeing how the sausage is made” as far as songs go, and also for being introduced to artists.
Hands down my favorite podcast. As a musician, the way they dissect the songs is both informative and inspiring.
Love this - keep up the great work!
I've loved this podcast since the very first episode, it's such a great tool for learning insight into the process of song making
This show is the kind of thing that I always wanted but never knew I could exist. A must listen for any musician or music lover.
I'm a music producer, so I'm hardwired to enjoy this podcast, but I think that the format and editing is extremely accessible to anyone. I love the variety of music featured. More than anything, I love the format of this show. It's a brilliant idea to have musicians showcase the individual pieces of their compositions, and it often creates surprising and insightful moments. My only complaint is that there are too few episodes.
SO glad that you've decided to do more than just one year. This show is incredible!
💪 Tour de Force 📻
If you enjoy learning about music this is perfect. Song Exploder does a fantastic job at making you interested in how every artist approaches making their music. I have yet to find an episode that I haven't liked. This is also a cool way to find some artists that you might not be very familiar with. It's also nice that if an artist mentions a specific influence, either another musician or a specific song, you not only get a sample of what they mean but you're able to check out even more new artists.
Terrific selection of music, and incredibly interesting.
Whether you are a music lover or just like to know how stuff is made this is the podcast for you. There is much more to a song than how it sounds the composition to goes into it and all of the intricate decisions that go into the layer of each song. I can’t wait for each new episode to come out. Thank you for making this!!!
Down to Earth and very informative.
This is the best podcast for music production on the internet.
This has become one of my favourite podcasts. Do yourself a favour and give it a listen.
Fascinating look into how a song gets put together. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Whether you know your way around a fretboard or not, Song Exploder will help you understand the creative process of music. Start with the Bob’s Burgers one!
When I first heard about this show I feared it would be deconstructing losing all the magic. This is not that. There is still magic. And magic is real!
Wonderful and insightful show. Introduces me to new bands and gives great insight to the creative process of various artists. My only wish is that there were more episodes a month!
Listening to creative people talk about a project they are excited about is basically guaranteed to be fascinating, no matter what the project is. Song Exploder combines this insight with tight editing and a nifty idea (exploring a song through its individual tracks). The result is a tight, information-packed podcast; really, it’s hard for me to say why you /wouldn’t/ want to listen to it.
A really interesting investigation on how music gets made. Each artist has their own unexpected methods, so this show really bring something new every week.
This podcast started by deconstructing one of my favorite songs, but even if it’s a song I’ve never heard before, hearing it taken apart and put together again is incredible.
The way this podcast is formatted and the fact that it reaches out beyond just normal music and taps into thing like TV themes is fantastic. Its amazing to hear how some of these songs are formed. Some you might know really well and their origin story can completely alter your perception of the piece. Some you have never heard and will learn to love just because you know what went into making it. Great show.
I was late to the game on Song Exploder, but recently started listening and am LOVING it. Anyone who likes music and enjoys knowing how the sausage is made will love it. Only warning, if you're like me you will never be able to listen to any of the featured songs quite the same way after listening. But that's a good thing.
Fun. Engaging. Informative. Well produced. All the things you want in a podcast.
I'm addicted. The episodes keep getting better and better. I've begun to love songs I'd never heard of. Hearing the song in the end, after its been broken down, is like reuniting with a long lost friend. What a revelation!
The format for this podcast is perfect, and the host executes without error: let the host introduce and close out, then give the artist and the music the center stage. The host essentially lets the guest musician(s) tell their tale of how their featured song came to be. It’s great when you have excellent guests, and it can feel empty when the musicians aren’t very informative.
This is one of my favorite podcasts. Great guests and the episodes are put together masterfully.
Song Exploder is the best. Even if you’re not familiar with the artist of song, hearing how it’s made and the process of composing and producing a song is always informative and enlightening. I can honestly say listening to this podcast has deepened my appreciation of music.
Great for picking out new details from songs you already know, inspiring insights into artists' working methods, and nearly always features great/interesting music. Discovered a couple new favorites through the podcast.
Such a great podcast. You'll hear these songs in a new light after listening to them broken down.
While I don’t know much about creating music, this show has pushed me to want to learn. I have only been familiar with a handful of the artists before I heard them on the show, but hearing the creative process explained in such detail has gotten me interested in several new artists and genres. Wonderful show, awesome stuff…!!!
Can't possibly recommend this enough - informative, creative, and fresh take on music creation and artist interviews. A must listen.
Always glad when this one shows up in my feed. Artists give great insight into their process, and I’ve discovered a bunch of artists I wasn’t aware of through this ‘cast.
Do you ever wonder how that particular band you really like makes a song? Well, so does Hrishikesh Hirway and he came up with this idea to talk to bands and artists about the process of creation. This is a must listen for any fan of music and the process of how a song comes together - amazing!
As someone who enjoys listening to music but doesn't know much about making this, I find this podcast absolutely mesmerizing, fascinating, and educational. I'm learning a lot about a side of music production that I've never known, and even the songs and bands that are unfamiliar are a joy to experience in their exploded form. Five stars!!
Awesome podcast. Great concept and great format. I can't wait to see who's gonna be next. Wish the episodes were longer!!!
As a member of two bands I’ve always been curious about how other people bring their songs together. This podcast is a must listen for those in music.
Take a song, one that you love too much or one you’ve never heard, and then tear it apart piece by piece, thought by thought, layer by layer, and choice by choice. I’m not sure how Hrishikesh manages to do this every couple of weeks, but he does. And he wraps up that disassembled examination with the artist’s insight, the singer’s inspiration, and the producer’s technique. I think this podcast has lead me to purchase more music than any other single influence. For that, I’m grateful.
A wonderful show, give an intimate and in depth deconstruction of how musicians build a song, where their inspiration comes from, and how they create a coherent whole. Plus great introduction to new music!
REALLY, REALLY GOOD PODCAST ABOUT MAKING MUSIC
The storytelling is awesome, as is the way that music productions are broken down into component parts, without seeming too technical or boring. Such a great show!
This podcast is great for anyone, but especially for audio/music people like myself. Producers, artists and engineers explain their process, give some insight into techniques and talk about specific gear they love and why. Awesome job, keep it up!
Really love learning more about how artists devise their song arrangements, as well as the spectrum of genres covered.
This podcast is really interesting. If you play or record in any capacity it's inspiring to hear how other musicians flesh out out their parts and contribute to the end result...you hear the song writer let the original concept become what it needs to be... Music lovers that aren't burdened with comparing themselves to everything they hear (see above) get to hear a musician explain the ideas, sounds, collaborative feedback and, sometimes (if you're lucky), mic placement of a congo drum... That being said, the latest live recording was a departure... I honestly hope Hutch Harris had to pay MaxFun a lot of money to get on the show, otherwise it's a huge departure for Hrishikesh. Keep em humble please (from yet another douche fan... Love your show though)
