Very informative and interesting...I look forward to this each week
Anson Carter episode was outstanding!
Richard Deitsch was a pioneer when he began covering sports media for Sports Illustrated back in the day. He does a fantastic job covering the major media stories but seems to especially relish shedding light on stories you might otherwise have missed. He has an easy rapport with all his guests (big-name sports media figures or names you may not know) and never seeks to make himself the star of the show. If you are interested in a career in sports media or just enjoy learning how the sausage gets made, you should be listening to this podcast.
Super discussions on sports and race. Needed this perspective in so many ways seeing the black athletes finding their voice and power and coverage of it. Have appreciated Richard’s genuine caring for people of color on the impact COVID and George Floyd has had on their lives.
Richard Deitsch is the man. Love this podcast. Keep up the great work.
Not necessarily about sports, but the game behind the sports. Ratings, personnel, money, etc.
I always learn something when I listen to this podcast.
From the biggest names in sports broadcasting to beat writers to colleagues who write about sports media, the diverse guests provide unique perspectives to the issues of the day.
I’ve been taking in Richard Deitsch content since he worked at Sports Illustrated. His editorial mindset and ability to LISTEN to understand, not to be understood, is what makes this podcast great. I was sold before the most recent episode with Wilson, Eaves, Cash, & Bennett, and now he’s shot to the top of my list of sports podcasts. Keep up the good work, RD!
I used to listen to mostly sports podcast, and this one is one of the best ones. Variety of sports networks are discussed. It comes regularly and is extremely packed with on point themes and inside stuff. Thank you! 😌 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ UPD. Please bring back the previous intro jingle! 🙇♂️
I really appreciate hearing the behind the scenes work done by so many to make the sports business function. Keep it up!
It’s the same 4 guests over and over and over...
Richard produces quality content and an enjoyable podcast. I have been a subscriber since his SI days and am a fan of his work. Some topics and guests are not my favorites (pro wrestling, New York sports talk radio) but it is easy to skip them. Also Richard can trip over himself asking rambling questions. Two consistent frustrations: the opening...ladies and gentlemen...lame! The other, my producer ‘as always’ frequently changes so it isn’t ‘as always’! I am looking at you Lou Pellegrino. But on the whole this podcast is an enjoyable listen with a good mix of regular guests and others. Give it a try.
This really broke my heart - I hope that you do a follow up with these folks and others. I’m a multi-decade subscriber, it had been my favorite magazine, I finally unsubscribes and when I did there was no question from the company about why. It’s just a business, I guess, but still they didn’t even want to know what 30+ year subscriber wanted to cancel.
Thanks for taking us behind the scenes of the unfortunate layoffs at Sports Illustrated. Much credit to your guests for sharing the tough situations they are currently facing and wishing them nothing but the best of luck. Grew up reading SI every week and this is very sad to see where talented people are losing their jobs during this time.
Richard has a way of asking great, pointed questions and takes you behind the curtain of the sports media world. Great podcast for any sports fan who wants to learn more of the ins-and-outs of their favorite sport. Absolutely recommend.
This podcast has quickly become a favorite of mine as RD covers across sports equally and gives great insight on the business side and how media companies operate. The frequent interviews with personalities and commentators are also fantastic.
Richard's podcast is consistent with his sportswriting, superb.
A really smart show that teaches you and informs you about the industry from a pleasant host.
I generally like the podcast but both with SI and the Athletic the audio quality is poor. Multiple times I have turned off a podcast I was enjoying the content of because the echoing or other quality issues made it unlistenable. It isn’t just poor connections with guest on the phone sometime Dietsch’s audio is unlistenable. Again good content but the worst audio of any major sports podcast.
Hey I’m sorry to hear that you are not feeling good today
Great episode with super guests who really have insight into Bob’s career and track record at ESPN. Timely!
Delighted to find Richard Deitsch’s unique take on sports media in podcast form. Smart conversations with smart people from the world of sports. Hope you’re following him on Twitter, too.
Has parted ways with his long time foil Jimmy Traina but perhaps they’ll re-unite to co- host a show in NY.
I've been listening for a couple of years and there are so many good interviews. But there are also a number of repeat guests. Jemele Hill has been on a few times. Conrad Thompson has been on a couple of times. Other people can tell us how they do a podcast. I learn so much from Deitsch's questions, although they are sometimes long-winded. Many questions he asks show me as an interviewer what questions to ask.
Reached a new low point with this episode. Dredging up two left-leaning irrelevant to current day sports media topics demonstrates that he lost the point of the podcast. SI Media podcast is far superior for impartiality and relevance. Walk away.
Another show that is not about politics yet feels compelled to display its virtue signaling so we know that the host is a paragon of liberalism. It’s about sports media snd when it sticks to sports media topics it’s enjoyable.
These guys - Richard Deitsch and John Ourand can’t be bothered to even know who the 4 teams are playing in Minneapolis? Would Deitsch criticize a sports reporter that makes the same mistake he made over and over? Or is he spending too much time worrying about Adnan Virk? Where’s his producer in this train wreck?
All the people Deitsch gets on the phone, they sound like they’re underwater. Even Deitsch’s own sound quality is poor. Very bad listening experience. Too many of the same guests over and over too.
Richard is a lively and thoughtful interviewer! A great listen for going in depth into the culture and media of sports.
Great guests and very insightful interviews.
The round tables/Ourand/Miller shows are always great listens.
I don’t always plan to listen to each guest but I’m usually glad I did. Different perspective.
Richard Deitsch is one of the preeminent sports media reporters around today. His interview style is conversational and engaging. He has great guests who give you a deeper understanding of sports broadcasting and journalism. A must listen for aspiring journalists and sports fans.
This is a must listen if you like sports, media and/or broadcasting. Richard conducts insightful interviews and gets his guests to open up often. The variety and diversity of guests is excellent as well.
I’m not a sports journalist but I listen to Richards podcast because it’s really good. He is an excellent interviewer, always finds a way to bring out new information. His “inside baseball” of the sports media landscape is fascinating
Richard Deitsch's Sports Media podcasts are terrific! He's always identifying interesting angles to explore before big events (Jim Nantz before heading into the March Madness/Masters season; Grant Wahl on covering a World Cup; Kevin Harlan on the differences between broadcasting football on radio vs. TV), and his questions draw out great responses from guests that give us an inside, deep look at how the best of the best in the sports broadcasting business prepare for and then carry out their work.
Always A+ material. Much respect for the amount of preparation done by Richard and his thoughtful questions. Big fan.
Very interesting and good information. Just wish Richard would ask a question and let the guests answer it, rather than answering it himself and then asking the guests what they think of his answer.
Love the content, especially when it goes inside the working process of journalist and broadcasters.
Just started listening. Referred by Bruce Feldman on The Athletic. Love the insight and closer look at the media!
Minihane brought me here.
Giving you 5 for having Kirk Mininhane on your podcast.
Lou is the best producer of all time
I love the candid nature of these conversations with notable media personalities across the world and it goes to show that Richard not only does his homework but he allows his guests to have their say without constant badgering or interruptions from the interviewer. Kudos, Richard!!
Richard is informative and has really great guest! Must listen!
I am glad this podcast exists for the grownups who love sports media, very informative always and makes me care about broadcasters
Now More than ever, media is a larger part of the story, so this podcast feels very necessary.
This Podcast is an extension of the excellent work Richard provides in his sports duties. What sets him apart from others is he lets the guests talk. Clark ~ O.K.
Without ANY pushback. Twisted and sick.
Richard gives really insightful thoughts to what is happening in the sports media world. His interviews are always timely and you can tell he is respected in the industry by how his interviewees respond to him and his questions. Keep up the great work!
I don’t always agree with everything said in these but they are easy, enjoyable listening and viewpoints are well articulated.
I always learn something new listening to this podcast. Richard’s preparation combined with his ability to listen and react to his guest is so refreshing. This podcast covers the spectrum of sports and media with great insight. If you listen to only one as an example, listen to the Verne Lundquist interview. Enjoy!
This is always my week’s can’t miss podcast. Glad to have access to it and RD’s expertise
Nice to hear Richard continuing his podcast in his new home at The Athletic. I especially enjoy his media round table discussions, which feature reporters who are plugged in to all the latest comings and goings in sports media.
Interesting to see the media side of sports from the individuals that produce content
Richard I'm glad the podcast isn't dead. I usually enjoy it. But please, please, please stop screaming over your guests all the time. Thanks!
Great to see RD’s podcast returning. You’ll be entertained with great guests and fantastic analysis
I have been a fan of Richard Deitsch’s for almost two years now. I often read his SI columns and will continue to now that he’s at The Athletic. Based on his previous show, this new podcast from Richard will be a must listen to stay informed on sports media news and a great place to for interviews with some of the best names in the sports media industry. Richard asks thoughtful and interesting questions of his guests and there’s usually quite a bit of humor in the sports media round table episodes. I’d recommend people subscribe!
