DJI Osmo Action VS GoPro Hero7 Black
DJI recently released its "GoPro killer" - the DJI Osmo Action. I've been using this camera for about a week now - so how does it stack up to the GoPro Hero7 Black? Both do 4k video and 12 megapixel stills. Both have incredible image stabilization (with a slight edge to the Osmo). But what about timelapse, hyperlaps and the other features action cameras are now expected to have? We'll take a look in this video. Canon EOS RP :: Why?
Canon has just announced a new entry level, full frame mirrorless camera - the Canon EOS RP. The most interesting features on this new camera are the RP's small size and its price. Its the most affordable full frame mirrorless camera to be introduced in the last year. But this makes me wonder, what is the point of the Canon RP? It doesn't have any more features than the DSLR cameras that currently exists, so unless your requirements are an extremely small size, why would this be a camera of interest? ...

No Photography Allowed?!?!
This weekend I went to Marfa, TX to visit the Chinati Foundation. Of course, no photography allowed. I'm always the first to defend the right to photograph, but in this case I actually agree with the policy. Experiencing the works of art by Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, John Chamberlain, Robert Irwin and many others - it requires attention. These are experience and environmental works that can't be reproduced in a photograph anyway. This does make it difficult to share my experience in this video, but I can...

Minimalism
This weekend I'm headed to Marfa, TX. Why? The main reason is Donald Judd. Judd is one of the leading minimilist artists from the 1970's and 1980's. While working in New York City, he started purchasing property in West Texas to display his large scale environmental works. Today, Chinati features works by Judd as well as Dan Flavin, Claes Oldenberg and Robert Irwin. I'm going to be vlogging my trip over the next few days. But before I do we need to discuss minimalism. Creative Photography vs Technical Photography
Photography is a mix of many disciplines - it includes a creative component on top of physics, chemistry, electronics and other various sciences. We live in an age where we have more technology coming out than we actually use. In some ways we are spoiled to this and its made us lazy in the effort that we put into creating images. So in this video, I'd like to raise a discussion about where the boundary is between the technical and the creative sides of our art. Where is it for you? Martin Mun...

Hot air balloon ride with my newly modified Sony NEX-7 camera with full spectrum conversion. Sony were nice enough to convert my older NEX-7 as a full-spectrum camera. Deepest Pixels :: Leica SL first look
This week Leica sent me the Leica SL and the 24-90mm f/2.8-4 lens to check out. I want to share with you a few first impressions - this thing is a tank. The Leica SL is a full frame, mirrorless camera with a 24 megapixel sensor. It shoots 4k/30p video. It also features a beautifully minimal interface, joystick and a .8x magnification viewfinder. Apple announced 3 new phones today - the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and the iPhone XR. There doesn't seem to be any upgrades to the cameras in these phones, but what actually impressed me is the processing power. Apple has introduced the new A12 Bionic sensor with the next-generation Neural Engine. There is a 50% graphics boost, 15% performance core boost, and 50% lower power usage. Apple is now claiming 5 trillion calculations per second. This is going to make things really interesting if we can get pa...

What they got wrong
There is an enormously missed opportunity in the world of photography today. We have more technology than ever before and we don't do very much with it. This week we saw 3 major announcements, the Nikon Z7 and Z6, the Canon EOS R and the Fujifilm X-T3. In the history of photography I've never seen a marketing blitzkrieg like we've seen over the last few weeks. And the funny thing is people respond not by making amazing things, but by fighting on the internet. Canon invites us to be part of the revoluti...

Why Sony is absolutely KILLING it right now
Love them or hate them, Sony has come to a point with their alpha series mirrorless camera lineup where they are dominating the mirrorless market. FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY :: Photo Assignment #14
Your topic for Photo Assignment #14 will be somewhat seasonably appropriate this time… we're talking about food photography. Photographing food is very similar to still life photography. There are a number of ways that you can communicate visually such as organic metaphor, concept, color, the unexpected - different approaches but all capable of interesting results. I took a photography history approach to the examples as we look at the work of Edward Weston, Wynn Bullock, Tom Baril, André Kertész,...

Successful portraits of any kind use elements of aesthetic and conceptual thinking to create works. There is one thing in photography that has declined to the brink of extinction in recent years – photography books. The economy has changed, they are expensive to print, photographers tend to live online now. But other than sparse museum catalogs, if it weren’t for Steidl and a few other publishers, books wouldn’t be currently produced. Support art and support photography – on both the local and global levels. Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr...

If Ansel Used Instagram
What if Ansel Adams or Henri Cartier-Bresson we’re on Instagram? How many likes would they have? Would Ansel have a drone? Would Henri Cartier-Bresson have followers? Is the golden age of photography over? Are there too many photographers today? Everyone has a camera on their cell phone – does that make everyone a photographer? 5 Reasons You Should Own A Nikon F4
Introduced in 1988, the Nikon F4 is one of the classics in the F series of 35mm SLR film cameras. It was the second flagship Nikon camera to incorporate autofocus (after the Nikon F3AF in 1983) and also added Matrix metering to the lineup. I bough mine in the early 2000’s and it was my main camera for several years. One of the best film cameras Nikon made and here are 5 reasons why you should own one.
