Aggregated reviews for The Horror of Dolores Roach

With blood on her hands, the infamous Dolores Roach has fled the recent shocking destruction in Washington Heights and gone into hiding deep under New York City in an abandoned subway tunnel. But she’s not alone underground, and her dark night of the soul is interrupted by an extremist faction of similarly self-exiled tunnel-dwellers whose space she's invaded. Facing re-incarceration back above ground, but pushed to the limits of shame, paranoia, lust, hunger, and depraved entrepreneurialism below it, Dolores is the outcast of the outcasts again - until she takes her survival in the tunnels into her own Magic Hands. Season 2 of The Horror of Dolores Roach is written and directed by Aaron Mark and stars Daphne Rubin-Vega, Donnell Rawlings, and Amy Ryan.

So freaking gory (4/5)

Well made podcast so gave it 4 stars but it’s so gory and nasty that I had to stop listening to it. Nasty crazy and just totally sick

Boring (2/5)

Maybe I just don’t like the NY accent. Episode 1 was boring to me honestly.

This show..... (5/5)

This show was my introduction to podcasts and I can honestly say. I have listened to a lot since I heard season 1. Nothing beats it. Nothing.

2nd season mediocre (2/5)

First season was good second season not good

So glad to see this back! (5/5)

I love horror podcasts, and when I stumbled across this, I was hooked from word one. The voice actress is phenomenal, and season one is one you’ll want to listen to again, because the second time through is a whole new experience. Can’t wait to listen to season two!

Needlessly gross (2/5)

I’m thrilled that Gimlet is making fiction podcasts. I hope they do more. But this second season is a miss for me. I suppose it’s fine if you’re into learning how to filet a human body, but it’s pretty grotesque for no reason, without a ton of plot so far

OMG! (5/5)

Love season 2! I cannot believe my ears! Episode 5 - talk about a cliff hanger!

Just When You Thought... (5/5)

Dolores could not get any freakier, season 2 does! It’s awesome! Best way to experience her tale is riding the NYC subways. It takes it to a whole new level. Great way to pass the commute time. Don’t look down the tunnels too long. You might see and hear things...

Where’s the rest? (5/5)

Does season 2 end at episode 5???

Modernized, Gender Switched Sweeney Todd (5/5)

It’s everything I love. Welcome back, Dolores!

Love it ! So juicy ! (5/5)

I am obsessed with Dolores !! Omg when are more episodes coming ?!

Wow (5/5)

This is such a great podcast! I’m so happy that there are stories like this around. I found 2 great fiction podcasts in one day. This one and another called Lennie Gray.

Welcome back (5/5)

I have been anxiously awaiting for her return and all I can say is welcome back Delores

Wow!!! (5/5)

All I can say is wow!! This is a wonderfully told story! I had no idea what to expect when I started & I was totally blown away with The HORROR of Deloris Roach! The actors were absolutely great! The Deloris Roach actress is phenomenal!

Bad for anyone with misophonia (3/5)

I should’ve guessed it. Don’t listen to this podcast if you’re triggered by mouth or eating noises. I mean, it is about cannibals so i should’ve supposed there may be some, but they started off strong with that nonsense in the first episode. Too many ads anyway. Well, maybe i could handle the number of ads if they were given all in one shot instead of sprinkled throughout the episode. It totally delineates from the immersive aspect of the podcast and always takes me out of it completely. This is the main reason why i try not to listen to podcasts by gimlet unless i’m really struggling to find something to listen to.

Blew me away! (5/5)

This has become a fav for me. The voice acting was outstanding. The story was so well contrived. The cast... was simply amazing. Bravo!!

Great story! (5/5)

I was hanging on every word and it was told so well.

WOW!! Gruesomely Awesome (5/5)

Just when you think it couldn’t get more disturbing it does. Don’t eat anything while you listen.

Loved it! (5/5)

I really enjoy listening to stories like it’s an old time radio show. The acting in Delores Roach is top notch and I could listen to Daphne Rubin-Vega’s voice all day. Excellent work; great ending. More please!

🤷🏻‍♀️ more please (5/5)

I loved it, started listening to it last yeae during Halloween!!! I wish they would create more podcasts!!! Just when it was really getting crazy 😭😭😭🔪🔪😫😫

Incredible!! (5/5)

The acting was so awesome ! We need another season or two.

Awesome Audio Novel! (5/5)

This story was well written and the a actors did a phenomenal job. This was my first audio show and it was amazing. It made my day at work go by much faster. I popped one AirPod in and hit play, next thing I knew, it was time to go home. Keep the stories coming! Thank you

Amazing (5/5)

Just amazing

Horror of Delores roach... What happens next?!?! (5/5)

I AGREE! lol more please🙏🏾❤️❤️

Wow! (5/5)

More please

Best podcast ever (5/5)

THIS!!!!!! If you haven’t listened to it yet what are you doing with your life?! I need more of this and I definitely think there needs to be more podcasts like this I’m sick of hearing white girls with annoying baby voices screaming into the microphone about some dude they blew last night. If you’re looking for some refreshing culture mixed with a little horror and sex this show is it.

This Podcast is EVERYTHING!!! (5/5)

Pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained!!! More please.

Gripping (5/5)

This is what radio drama is meant to be. Every episode hand me hooked and I couldn’t wait for the next. The finale was amazing. I didn’t see it coming and had to listen to this podcast again only to be just as enthralled as the first time. This is definitely the best podcast ever!

Latino Sweeney Todd (5/5)

Ok this podcast is a little bit Sweeney Todd but it’s backwards and Latino. A really good podcast to listen to if you’re a fan of broadway musicals and creepy stuff.

Good and Dark (5/5)

This is a good fiction podcast, but prepare yourself for some really dark stuff.

Incredible modern take on a classic story (5/5)

Absolutely amazing story. The main actress is incredible - so believable.

Loved it!! (5/5)

So catchy! Loved the dark humor, I’m hoping for a sequel or even a prequel to this!!! Great work!

What a Ride! (5/5)

Nice character development with wonderful exchanges between the two main characters. While you knew something was coming, the dark humor was an unexpected pleasure. Could not stop listening!

Great! (5/5)

Very catchy

Amazing!!!! (5/5)

This podcast was nothing short of amazing. It felt like I was in every scene. Great job. Please don’t keep me in suspense for the next chapter!!

Great work (5/5)

Amazing writing and acting! I look forward to more stories of similarly high production in the future.

Love This!! (5/5)

Put this on at work and have been binging on it!! Cant wait for the next season. The acting pulled me right in!!

Could be better (3/5)

Lacked character development and just got gory and exponentially violent without explanation.

Excellent gory & addictive (5/5)

The acting pulled me right in! I have recommended this to others. Well done!!!

Riveting! (5/5)

I sincerely hope there will be another season. The narrators were so vibrant and them coupled with the background really immersed me in the story.

Amazingly good listen. (5/5)

Enjoyed this podcast immensely. I haven’t listened to this style before but I liked it a lot. Hoping for Season 2. Would love it as a TV series. Acting in this was amazing as well!

Sweeney Todd but Make it New York (3/5)

Interesting perspective but too predictable.

Well acted but not special (3/5)

I really like the acting but the premise is derivative of the classic independent movie from the 1980s “Eating Raoul”.

Totally absorbing (5/5)

Great story, realistic script, brilliant acting. Bravo!

🔥🔥🔥🔥 (5/5)

Awesome!!! Season 2!?

WOW !! (5/5)

This literally blew my mind. The production on this is crazy great. The storyline.. EVERYTHING. It’s one of those things where I wish I never binged it all in one day because now it’s gone. I will listen to this again. I’m happy they are turning it into a tv series, but a little scared too because my imagination worked wonders during this whole season. Thanks for the amazing experience !!

Epic! (5/5)

Love the characters totally dope! I’m a massage therapist and I loved it !!!

Netflix (5/5)

We need a miniseries, please!

Fantastic in every way!!! (5/5)

I am an avid podcast listener. The Horror of Dolores Roach has become one of my all time favorites up there with Homecoming, S*** Town, and Serial. Daphne Rubin-Vega is brilliant and so is the supporting cast including Bobby Cannavale, actually all of the sound production/music too. I really hope they make a TV version of this and please don’t replace Rubin-Vega like they did with Catherine Keener in Homecoming (sorry Julia Roberts but in a podcast we get attached to the voice). Daphne Rubin-Vega is this show’s voice! Loved this!!

Wow. Gimlet nailed this one (5/5)

This needs to be a movie. How have I not heard about this!!!?

So so good!!! (5/5)

What a brilliant podcast!!

Fantastical horrifying! (5/5)

I wish there were more podcasts like this... well acted, great audio!

Deliciously disturbing (5/5)

The acting in this podcast is awesome and the ending is perfect! I fully recommend this podcast to anyone who enjoys well written horror and isn’t squeamish.

This Is CRAAZY! (5/5)

...and I LOVE it‼️

Loved it! (5/5)

Great story, fantastic acting and storytelling and a wonderful treat to hear Michael Urie!

Scary (5/5)

It was too creepy I had to stop listening lol

Excellent podcast (4/5)

This was very well written and the acting was great!!

Great podcast (5/5)

I normally don’t listen to fictional podcasts but this was great

Loved it! (5/5)

What an amazing story!! Had me on edge of my seat. What an ending!! Thank you!

This was great!! (5/5)

This was fantastic!! I’m hate myself for finishing it all in a day! Definitely one of my favorites!

One hell of a podcast (5/5)

I’m not big on podcast, but glad I chose this one. Humor, sadistic, hype and edge of your seat story. The hero becomes the villain and back to the hero multiple times. I enjoyed this so much I got my friends at work listening to it as we speak. Can’t wait for season 2.

Great story (5/5)

Loved it!!!

Can’t Get Enough! (5/5)

I cannot get enough of Dolores! The voice acting in this is incredible, and the storyline has me on edge. This is by far one of my favorite podcasts! Thank you for such an amazing time!

LOVE IT (5/5)

When is the next season coming? I want to try the empanada super loca lol

So good! (5/5)

This show was entertaining AF! The cannibalism was not too much, maybe for pansies. There no detail of cannibalism anyways. I recommend this one 100%

Loco! (5/5)

Brilliant storytelling. As many have said, it reminds one of Sweeney Todd. Also had a bit of Gollum to it in the end 😉. I was hooked!

Meh (2/5)

This is, pretty much exactly, a Hispanicized Sweeney Todd - but without Sweeney Todd's great music, sharply defined characters, and sly sense of humor. You'll be a full four and half episodes in before anything actually happens. There is one potentially interesting plot twist late in the show, but it's played for shock value, goes nowhere, and has no effect on the rest of the narrative. The voice acting is good, but the show just isn't very interesting or horrific.

Love it (5/5)

I’m so excited for the next episode. I hope it keeps going. It’s so interesting and funny too.

Are empanadas pies? (4/5)

I really enjoy the actors. The story is good, but it’s an old one- Sweeney Todd. Just reverse the gender rolls. There are also WAY too many commercials. There’s only about 15 minute of actual story per episode.

Amazing! (5/5)

This story had me hooked from the start. I binged all the episodes and wish there was more. Graphic at times but the story telling and the visuals had me fully invested.

Dark and entertaining (5/5)

Very much in the vein of Sweeney Todd, this podcast has solid voice acting and is great for those who enjoy horror.

Awesome fiction (5/5)

Loved it. Very well-done audio-only storytelling and sound design. Hooked from the beginning. Sometimes there’s just nothing like good old-fashioned fiction, and these horrors were just the thing I wanted when I found them.

I can’t believe this is my “bedtime story” (5/5)

It’s become a bad habit of mine, falling asleep to podcasts: gives fitful sleep, bad dreams. This beautiful woman’s voice lulls me with a story whose plot came out of nowhere ... How can something so disturbing be simultaneously so soothing? Yet: sound sleep, no nightmares, interesting thoughts upon waking. Kudos!

Sweeney Todd, meet Dolores Roach (5/5)

I almost gave it four stars, because I wanted better for Dolores with how I grew to love and empathize with her in the first two episodes and hated where she ended up, but then I realized not being able to predict and have the story and ending I wanted for her was incredibly well done. Erin is a great storyteller and as twisted and disgusting as much of it was, I couldn’t stop listening. I still want better for Dolores; I want her to be able to avoid bad karma. I definitely recommend this podcast, we all have an ugly side (probably not this ugly), but it’s a good way to examine that line that keeps us from the truly ugly and walking the straight and narrow, how big a step is it to our ugly side? What pushes us across that line? What is desperation and hopelessness?

Obsessed (5/5)

I have been obsessed with Daphne Rubin Vega since I saw her in the original staging of “Rent” on Broadway! I am so thrilled to see her up front and center again with this incredible work!! Congratulations! Your talent is amazing.

Wonderfully repulsive (5/5)

Really an audio masterpiece

Have you lost your mind? (1/5)

You haven’t done squat with Delores Roach, which started off great and then fizzled, now you start a new one Conviction? Just go back to what you did best, flipping burgers at Mickey D. Cause you can’t finish what you started!

Chilling (5/5)

Excellent storyline - well acted, well written, full of surprises. Very dark, but also very funny! Can’t wait for season 2!!!

Nope (1/5)

I actually listened to a good portion of this, waiting for it to get better. Spoiler: it doesn’t.

Funny and Macabre at the Same Time (5/5)

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Daphne Rubin_Vega is gold, no, platinum. I didn't know where this was going but completely enjoyed the ride. Thanks.

One massage, please! (5/5)

I have exhausted all those close to me talking about how good this show is. An unapologetically biting contemporary romp rich with character and camp, that thoughtfully reflects on the oppressive cyclical nature of poverty and America’s criminal justice system. We do not deserve Daphne Rubin-Vega, a criminally underrated national treasure, rounded out by a cast featuring some of the best actors in New York. The brilliant adaptation of this play and stellar sound design make this one of those podcasts that feel like a revelation for the medium. Kill me, Delores Roach!! Please murder me!!!

Whoa (5/5)

If you like horror stories, this is for you!

Yes!!! (5/5)

Great entertainment to listen to while on the subway in Manhattan

Sucked me in.. (5/5)

Screw those negative reviews, it’s a great podcast and the voice actors aren’t crappy like some of the other fiction I’ve listened too..keep up the great work..

Modern Sweeney Todd! (5/5)

Loved this! It’s like a modern retelling of Sweeney Todd. Yes the meat parts were a bit icky. But that’s good storytelling if they can gross you out with only words and sounds and no pictures!

Loved it! (5/5)

Couldn’t help myself... binge-listened in one day. Thoroughly entertaining! Delicious!

Barf. (1/5)

Takes it wayyy too far. YUCK x50,000

An Urban Penny Dreadful for the 21st century (5/5)

Superb voice acting. Well paced, macabre, graphic, that is an audio adaptation of Victorian penny dreadful such as Sweeney Todd. I strongly disagree with accusations of racist and antisemitic stereotypes for a. This is not a social realist audio play, it is stylistic, genre- reviving macabre play. b. Stereotypes do not come out of nowhere but largely based on reality. Point is not to avoid cliches or stereotypes but NOT to reduce whole people or cultures into them. Nuance is key. If the empanada maker is a Latino, it only makes sense that the landlord is a Hassidic Jew in contemporary Brooklyn. C’mon guys, get off your high horses.

Ugh (1/5)

Yeah I listened to the whole thing and I wish I hadn’t. I guess I hoped that it would get better but nope. It’s too dull and drones on for about 4 episodes too long. The dialect alone almost made me run in the first 5 mins and makes this story very hard to listen to. Skip this one, you can thank me later.

It’s Sweeney Todd Retold (5/5)

If you’re a fan of The Demon Barber of Fleet Street then chances are you will love this story. It is very dark, but so is Sweeney Todd, which this is definitely based upon. It is very cleverly retold in the modern world. It is very graphic and in case the title did not give it away, it is a horror story. But the storytellers have struck a good balance between the grim and gruesome. A good horror story portends the horrific event and leaves it always close so that you know it is coming, but never exactly when or how, allowing you to live in that moment of expectancy for a long time before the actual event. It doesn’t revel in disgusting details for their own sake. And The Horror of Delores Roach is one of those great horror stories that doesn’t seek to shock but to mortify. It’s very good if horror is your thing.

A Must! (5/5)

The story had me hooked from the beginning. Great plot and amazing narrations! I’d give it higher than five stars if I could!

Truly captivating (5/5)

The story took me into the world they cream for me and I was it’s happy prisoner!

Loved this show! (5/5)

Some of the best voice acting I’ve ever heard in a podcast. An amazing story with captivating characters that brought in modern issues to add flavor to an old idea (Sweeney Todd).

Graphic and Gory!😍 (5/5)

I love it! It’s both graphic and gory with TWO unexpected twists at the end. Dialogue was AWESOME. The episodes aren’t too long and each one leaves you wanting more. I can’t wait to check out more from Gimlet.🤗

Gross but intriguing (5/5)

I was hooked on the story and acting. Yes, its subject matter is, uh, different but I was entertained.

Can’t wait for more! (5/5)

This was such a captivating story right from the beginning, I’m so glad I discovered it after all the episodes were done so that I didn’t have to wait for each one.

Creative 1st person story telling. (4/5)

I love how this was done, but the actual story is hard to swallow. I am pretty sure I will never eat an empanada again. But if you aren’t triggered by a story of violence and cannibalizes then it’s a creative story telling experience and worth try a listen.

Good Stuff (4/5)

I binge this podcast on a sunny, Saturday afternoon. It wasn't quite what I expected, but I very much enjoyed it. What suprised me was how funny it was at certain moments. And there was one scene where the story got very sad and very dark unexpectedly. I thought the last minutes were a bit extreme and not in line with the rest of the story, but overall, it's well done and helped me to understand the radio serials people listened to before TV.

Well done, but it does take a surprising turn! (4/5)

I may never go for another massage!

Sweeney Todd Reboot (1/5)

The production value is solid. The story is full of heavy handed metaphors on gentrification and race relations.

Why? (1/5)

Nothing but cussing and ads!

Garbage (1/5)

This was some truly antisemitic trash. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Wow! (5/5)

What the entire $&)? I couldn’t stop listening to this podcast. Omg

About time! (4/5)

Realistic descriptions of NYC neighborhood life, like it used to be. Plus a pretty good cannibal tale. Hits the spot, heh heh...

Did not like (1/5)

Acting good. Wasted effort on writing and production. I can horror and terror. This was just stupid.

Listeners discretion (5/5)

This storyline is not for the squeamish. If you’re into gory horror, then this is worth a listen. It’s unique and engaging. The voice acting is great.

Intriguing (5/5)

Couldn’t stop listening. The actual end, the very last part is kinda freaky, especially if listening through earbuds.

I want more... stories like this. (5/5)

I wanted more of an ending, or for the story to never end. But we can’t always get what we want. So, A+ and gold star(s). My ears enjoyed every second.

If you like Sweeney Todd... (3/5)

Then you’ll recognize this is just a rip off of that plot, just moved into New York.

This is the craziest podcast ever! (5/5)

Wow! I have never heard a podcast like this. Just when I was about to delete my podcasts app, I ran into this gem. The storyline had me on the edge of my seat, and it kept my attention. I could not stop listening wanting to hear the whole craziness and chaos. Now, I’m about to try and find Dolores Roach on Alexa! This is warped, but well worth it.

Loved it (5/5)

I loved the story and the characters. The production was great.

Riviting (5/5)

This story was so strange and different from anything I’d ever heard. Delores is a likable complex character who keeps you wanting to listen so you can understand how she got where she was. I love the fact that all of the characters stay true to who you say they are. As a NYer I swear I passed Delores in the street just last week. Love it...can’t wait for the next season.

Best story telling (5/5)

This is the best story telling I have ever heard. It’s not the traditional boring story telling. Other scripted fiction broadcasts, listen and learn. This story is made in perfection. Thank you and please keep them coming.

Disgusting boring and repeat (1/5)

Nasty people made this show. I listened for a while but it’s vulgar and unnecessary. No idea who likes this crap.

Really??? (2/5)

Good storytelling, but gross. Kept hoping the cannibalism deal would stop being the main thing, and it stayed as the central idea, so I cannot recommend it for that reason....if u aren’t appalled by that kinda thing you may enjoy it.

Raw, real, horrible, wonderful: beauty is gore (5/5)

A female Chicano ex-con returning to her old neighborhood. The layers of culture, voice, narration, choices, racism, gentrification, feminism, survival—it’s profound, but it doesn’t preach. The message is secondary to the story, which I can almost see and smell. I want more Dolores.

Amazing (5/5)

I enjoyed every minute of this story. So descriptive and captivating,

Addictive (5/5)

One of the best! I’d love to know what happens to Delores next!

Fascinating (4/5)

Quality production and very entertaining story. Also, surprisingly gross! Well done!

Pretty good. (3/5)

Certainly horrific. The production is great — the actors and sound design are awesome — and it makes the story, however tasteless, pretty riveting. Probably not for everyone, given all the cannibalism and sex, but it was a spooky fun listen.

Love it!!!!! (5/5)

This is soooooo entertaining!!!

Hooked! (4/5)

I gave it a 2nd chance, and I’m glad! It’s been very entertaining so far!

Best. (5/5)

I am obsessed w this! Couldn’t stop listening once I started. Really terrific acting. Highly recommend !

I loved it (5/5)

I hate that I finished it. I wish there was more, well done.

Terrible Program (1/5)

This program is crude with unnecessary graphic scenes, including unnecessary descriptions of sexual conduct. In addition, it plays on the worst stereotypes of people, particularly with a blatant antisemetic portrayal of a greedy, racist Yamulke wearing bearded Jew from Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Alex Blumberg should be embarrassed for creating and leading the company that originated this show.

Loved it (5/5)

Gritty Urban Horror story , great voice acting, great story, throughly enjoyed it all the way through. Luis made my lungs hurt with all that smoking he does LoL

Interesting storyline (5/5)

Very interesting storyline. It reminded me of orange is the new black. If you like that show or grotesque thrillers then this podcast is for you. I love thrillers so I really enjoyed its creepy vibes.

Fresh take on an old plot (5/5)

Sometimes plot sounds familiar but play of Dolores actress is astonishing and addictive

Best and most unique horror podcast I’ve heard (5/5)

Wonderfully acted and told

Mixed feelings (3/5)

The storytelling is so impressive and the story itself is quite brilliant. I just feel so gross after listening to it.... eh.... yuck.

Sweeney Todd Rip-Off using Social Issues for Attention. (1/5)

First, credit where credit is due, the lead voice actor is quite good. She portrays a believable and interesting character. However, for me, this show fell apart quickly as it became clear that it was just a rip-off of Sweeney Todd without original thought. Now, it does add in some social themes that would be interesting, except that the writers pack so many in that it feels like a cheap ploy for attention. It’s feels like they are checking boxes. Trans character? Check. Closeted gay character? Check. Gentrification? Check. Mentally ill character? Check. Disability? Check. Prison reform issues? Check. Racial tension? Check. Harsh penalties for drug crimes? Check. Glass ceiling? Check. Unwanted sexual advances by men? Check. I would much prefer if they just took a few themes and explored them more intimately.

New York’s Sweeney Todd (5/5)

Simply brilliant. I loved every second of it! Delores is simply a well rounded character with a lot to offer the listeners.

Sooo good (5/5)

Loved it. Enthralling!! Can’t wait for more like it.

Anti-Semitic (1/5)

The plot was poorly constructed and made regular use of anti-semitic stereotypes. Really, people?

Captivating! (5/5)

I just devoured it on Pandora and wanted to give a review because I know it helps the creators. I Hit the first episode by chance looking through pandora podcast(which is new to me) and starting down the rabbit hole of this great series. I was sad once I realized it was over. Get through the first episode and stop , if you can.

So good!.. (5/5)

Such an awesome concept and cast. I absolutely love it, I listen to it over and over.

FYI: The word “horror” is there for a reason (5/5)

This is an amazing story. It starts out as a hopeful tale of an ex-con trying to make a clean start after getting out of prison, and then takes a sharp (heh) left into dark, bloody territory. It’s brutal, it’s sexual, it’s twisted, and it’s not for everyone. But I loved it.

Crazy implausible (3/5)

Listened to all 8 episodes. While entertaining at times, the storyline was so implausible that I too often distracted thinking “no way.” And I am generally pretty good at suspending reality. Definitely not for anyone who wants a “feel good” ending. While I sometimes recommend podcasts to family and friends, this one I will not.

Sweeney Todd It Isn’t! (2/5)

I think this is an attempt at a modern day Sweeney Todd. Doesn’t quite work for me! Also very gross.

Not for everyone!!! (5/5)

This was a podcast I listened to all in a few hours I could not stop !! It was a bit graphic and disturbing but I loved it !! Can’t wait for more !! Keep it coming!!🔪⛓🌮🚬👍

the storyline is becoming too outrageous. (2/5)

Man!!! I almost stopped listening when Dolores killed the landlord, but I stayed with it, but then chopping up the landlord and making his remains into empanadas??? Lol! I just can’t recover. I’m out! Sorry. The acting is really good but the storyline is becoming too outrageous.

Outstanding... (5/5)

How polarizing an urban Sweeney Todd can be! It’s A HORROR STORY, Folks. And FUNNY AF. It’s Now and it’s Wow. Just, don’t use it as a playbook. I particularly enjoy the Brilliant Performances.

Creepy, better than a movie, awesome (5/5)

So creepy! Great storytelling. Was great in helping me become a vegetarian 😂

Sweeney Todd in Brooklyn (1/5)

What a rip off.

Empanadas (2/5)

I appreciate the effort but I could skip 8-10-12 minutes ahead and they’d still be talking about empanadas.

Wow (4/5)

The voice acting and sound effects are fantastic. I felt like I was listening to an old radio show. The writings are intense and I felt like I was standing in the room with her everywhere she went. Well done! I could feel how crazy Deloris was by the end. Awesome!!

So creepy, weird, and disgusting, disturbing, but well told. (4/5)

I keep thinking I can’t continue listening to this but I’ve gotten into the story. I wish it weren’t so gross, because I think it could have been a great podcast but without the sick stuff.

Very Odd - But I Listened (3/5)

Weird story. Not so sure about this one. But I did listen to all of the episodes. I just kept thinking, “where is this going??” Had to hear the end.

Sweeney Todd 2018 (5/5)

Gross but funny AF!!!! Hilarious.

Compelling but not creepy. (4/5)

The first few episodes of this series are pretty down to earth and they felt like a story that could be real but eventually it just becomes a series of loosely connected murders culminating in... something. Not that the ending was bad but I don’t want to spoil it. The horror mostly comes from descriptions of cannibalism (with sound effects!) and the fact that Delores’ situation means that she is forced to live with a man who is somewhat of a danger to her. Don’t expect any of that sweet sweet “lingering fear” (unless these are the types of things that really get to you) but if you want a good story you won’t be dissected. Also these actors are freaking great you guys.

Not worth it (2/5)

Good cast but the story is just gross - not scary or thrilling - and predictable.

A standout - Worth it (5/5)

This is not the sort of story I'm usually drawn to, but I read a short review that led me to give it a try. Boy, I'm glad I did! This is one of those stories that feels real, mostly because of the great voice-acting, but also because the story is different and intriguing.

Storytelling At Its Best (5/5)

I’ve been on a storytelling kick for a while and this definitely scratched that itch. If you’re a fan of horror, enjoy a good story, or love edge of your seat thriller, this is for you.

Disappointing (2/5)

Bravo to the actors, but this cannidbolism is relentless and there is no payoff at the end. Love Gimlet. So sorry I completed this listen.

Man, that's too much! (4/5)

I recommend if you’re the type of person who actually likes feeling horrible than this if for you. The last scene made me very uncomfortable.

Wow! (5/5)

This show is so good! Im a horror fanatic and this is freshest thing I’ve seen come from the horror genre as a whole. Love it

Gripping! (5/5)

I loved every minute of it. Very suspenseful. Amazing production values!

Yesss (5/5)

I loved it and how descriptive it was! I never wanted to stop listening.

Sound Design 💯 (5/5)

So...I don’t usually like audio fiction podcasts, but gave this one a shot since Gimlet produces many of my favorite shows. I was hooked right away! Binge listened the whole thing. Amazing actors, but even more amazing is the sound design. Bravo Gimlet! Looking forward to hearing more.

Amazing, gruesome and addictive (5/5)

This isn’t for everyone but for those who can handle a true crime podcast this is real time crime podcast. The acting is unbelievable, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Bobby Cannavale are intoxicating. Their quick wit chatter is so accurate and all the side characters are reminiscent of the diversity before dot com gentrification. So good!

Amazing. (5/5)

I’m hooked. I have one more episode (I think). This is so interesting. Please make more!!!!

Sweeney Todd (3/5)

A little on the nose replication of the Sweeney Todd formula, in a different setting with a different message. The voice acting is incredible and production is great. Just can’t escape that’s it’s a little too close to the demon barber.

Loved it (4/5)

Loveeeeed this content but Gimlet please ease up on your ads they are too much.

Great acting...underutilized (3/5)

The acting was great but the storyline left a lot to be desired. The cursing was overemphasized to the point of gratuitous punctuation. The characters were underdeveloped.

Good story but hmm. (1/5)

It was a good story but extremely graphic. In my opinion unnecessarily so.

Good but innacurate (2/5)

As typical of the liberal left, the podcast plays into ancient anti-Semitic Jewish stereotypes of Jews being greedy and taking advantage of brown people, while ignoring the fact that Jews predate Latinos in Washington heights by 30 years. Further the description of the Jewish landlord and his son was almost as if the writer had never met a religious Jew in his life.

Freakishly amazing! (5/5)

The story was totally weird, but it was great! I loved it! So creative! So awesome! Great axing! Yes, weird. However, I thought it was fantastic! I highly recommend it!

Gripping, wonderful performances (4/5)

This is the first theatrical podcast I've got all the way through. Really great acting and sound design, also thoroughly dark and disturbing. Excellent!

Sweeney Todd anyone? (4/5)

Is this a Sweeney Todd knockoff set in our world today? Yes. Is it still killer good? Totally. Amazing voice talent and script!

Binged it. Great acting (3/5)

If the goal was to hook me into binging, then job well done. But the story just started to jump the shark for me n left me creeped out n unsatisfied. Would have loved to use that great story line about life after prison n the struggle to tell a true to life atory. The acting was incredible n kept me hooked. Too much drama to seem realistic. Jumped too many sharks. But i couldn’t stop listening.

Please listen! (5/5)

Chilling and captivating... what more could you want?

Sweeney Todd in Harlem (4/5)

Gruesome but fun

Great story telling! (4/5)

The story is thrilling and Deloris is a fantastic actress. Also, nice job with the spoilers in the previous reviews 😑 I’ve never gone to listen to a podcast and had it immediately ruined when I’ve opened it. Hopefully the review can be removed or modified so as to not ruin other listener experiences. Even so, I think it’s a captivating story.

Meh (2/5)

Just not a fan. I really tried, honestly. But at times it seemed a little cheesy and contrived.

Great!! Keeps you on the edge of your seat (5/5)

Love it

Fantastic Narration! (5/5)

Really love the shows by Gimlet. Makes you feel like you’re really watching a movie. This one was pretty creepy... right up my alley 😊

Omg cannot stop listening (5/5)

It’s like one of those books you can’t put down, in podcast form. Seriously I can hear Deloris in my head. When is season 2! I need more! Yo, I’m like a feen!!

Sad it’s over (5/5)

I don’t like the cannibalism, however what an amazing story. This was my first podcast story my husband got me into it. Now I need something similar.

Awesome (5/5)

If this was a book it would be a page turner. It made me laugh and made me wanna vomit. I binge listened to the whole thing because I had to know what was gonna happen next.

Awesome story! (5/5)

I love it! Great writing and ACTING! It’s suspenseful, colorful, witty and raw! A peek at the other side! It’s a horrible morale dilemma, like her or love her?! Is Delores officially a serial killer?!!

Food chewing (4/5)

I love that this is kind of a modern version of Sweeney Todd with a variety of voices, some parts are kind of ridiculous but I’m also not the type of person to need all my horror to be totally uptight. The only thing that bothers me are the food/eating sounds that seem to be in every episode so far. I don’t know why so many podcasts want to include chewing and/or talking with a characters mouth full, it’s gross and for people like me with misophonia, we fast forward those parts and miss part of the story.

Wasted Talent (1/5)

It’s unfortunate that the performances are wasted in this tired story.

Modern Sweeney Todd! (5/5)

Daphne Rubin Vega is beyond amazing... listened to it all today.

Strays into unfortunate stereotypes (1/5)

Luis and Dolores are bad enough as poorly written two dimensional characters but the way the landlord is characterized (nauseating anti-semitic tropes) is shocking to hear from such a high-quality outfit as Gimlet. Really? What were you thinking?? Deleting now.

Copyright? (3/5)

It’s a cool (if gross) story, but it’s also exactly the storyline of Sweeney Todd, down to every last plot twist. Except for a few superficial details (e.g., empanadas instead of meat pies, Washington Heights instead of London), the storyline is so predictably identical that you probably don’t need to listen if you’ve already seen Sweeney Todd. Otherwise, the production quality and voice actors made it a really engaging listen, so I give it 3 stars.

Like watching a movie! Acting is top notch! (5/5)

I am absolutely hooked! Lead character is fascinating and such a refreshing character. Love this!

Wonderful ear candy! (5/5)

I know a podcast is good when it makes me cringe ind disgust one second and audibly laugh the next. Not for the weak stomach but very well done.

Omggggg I’m shook (5/5)

This was so good! It was like a movie I need more !!!!

Horrifying (5/5)

This story is powerful through episode 4. It has so many great moments of fantastic acting by the characters. The trouble I feel with the story is the reliance on stereotypes to advance the characters. The returned citizen who struggles and fails to stay above board. The visceral animosity highlighted between races. But at the same time there is finally a street level view of what it feels like to see a diverse neighborhood suddenly gentrify. At the same time there is truly some horrifying scenes that caused me to draw my breathe. It’s more than worth a listen.

I want more!!! (5/5)

I love it 💜💜

The 1 Star People are Pansies (5/5)

Listen, I read the bad reviews. All these people who say it was way too gross almost made me back out. There is worse stuff on TV. Come on people, the description says “cannibalism” in it. I don’t know what those people expected. They literally describe the taste of people as kinda like pork or beef. Done! Nothing else. The description of the dead bodies might have been a bit much but I’m not gonna come crying in a review when a show lists cannibalism in the description. Anyone who listens signed up for that and if you can’t handle it, that’s your beef because there are a ton of other people like me who can handle it and love the show. Just know your own limits before coming into the show and know when to back out if you need to and you’ll be all set. The narrative is very engaging and entertaining to listen to. I felt like I was there. I felt for these characters even though the show is a very quick listen. A shame that the bad review listed first almost had me turn tail and run. I really enjoyed this. Great work Gimlet!

Holy Repulsive Moly (4/5)

This podcast is so well executed it’s astounding, but my god it’s only for the strong of stomach 😂🤢 I forced myself to finish it because I loved the characters but the last three episodes were a haul. I’ll refrain from spoilers, just make sure you’re not eating while listening. Also, maybe I’m not typical, but I don’t agree with the reviews that say the F bomb is overdone... sounds about right to me. Daphne, the actor who plays Dolores, is tremendous.

AMAZING! Not for wimps (5/5)

Best horror podcast I’ve heard to date. Creepy, gross, dark.

Crazy (4/5)

This storyline is crazy ridiculous. And I can never eat empanadas again.

Mental trip (5/5)

This was very dark and gruesome! The voice acting, sound, and imagery portrayed was definitely top notch. I will check some more of these out. Some of the things in the story caught me off guard and were a bit much, but this is how they wanted to share their story.

Pretty good for a radio drama (4/5)

The sound effects and acting are all spot on, in line with Gimlet’s high quality. I binged the whole season over two days of housework and really enjoyed it. The plot is obviously a take on Sweeney Todd. They kind of went way off the rails with the Sandra plot so I think this is a reaction.

Awesome (5/5)

So this show may not be for everyone but this is really an awesome listen. It’s horror with a twist!

I Loved it!! (5/5)

This posdacat was so well done!! This is like old time radio shows my parents talked about before the invention of television. However, not the wholesome kind of long ago LOL!!! This is pure rated R fun!! The actors were great and really sucked me in!! I was bummed when it ended! I hope there’s a season 2!! Now I have to find another story podcast to listen to while I patiently wait for the return of Delores!!!!!

Exploding with thrilled and excited (5/5)

One of the best podcasts I’ve ever heard with a totally thrilled shocking and entertaining experience I ever heard with level of detail and culture if you want a story that turn your stomach upside down look no further then here you won’t regret listening to this I was amazed by the reality of this story

‘Nuff said.

One you start, you can’t stop! (5/5)

From the eerie piano to hearing the bustling sounds of New York, this show was amazing. The passion in each characters voice gave me visualization of how they look. It’s almost like I was in the basement with Delores. Much praise to Daphne and the cast and crew for putting together a well produced show.

OMG (5/5)

Great story!!!

Couldn’t Stop Listening (5/5)

I guess I like gore. I like to hear it but not see it (I cant stand horror movies). Anyway, this podcast struck me right away, I was hooked! First of all I lived in Washington Heights Manhattan for 3 years in my 20’s, and secondly the main actor was GREAT! I swear I listened to the entire series in one day (I did a lot of driving that day...) Amazing podcast. I’m LOVING Gimlet Media’s story podcasts. So good. Keep doing this!!!

It’s something (4/5)

I really liked it but the landlord being a greedy Jew seriously. Otherwise I think it’s pretty cool. Very graphic but it’s supposed to be I couldn’t believe I made it all the way through it!

Sweeney Todd: but more edgy. (5/5)

As a Sondheim fan, I loved this story and “consumed” all the delicious episodes in less than a week. Smart, creepy, and well-done.

Amazing acting (5/5)

The acting in this is amazing. Was it written for the Daphne Rubin Vega? Because her performace is glorious. And this podcast is so well written! Thank you for making this!!!

Love the story!! (5/5)

Omg this is the best! I enjoyed the series so much! Can’t wait for next one!!!

Great podcast (5/5)

Very entertaining!!

Don’t miss magic hands (5/5)

With wonderful narrative, fabulous writing, Gimlet has delivered-

Great Podcast (5/5)

Loved listening to this. Great podcast!

Entertaining, but Meh (3/5)

Didn’t think the writing really portrayed actual people (even if it could have been based on someone). Overall, cool story, just wasn’t in love with the writing.

Great show! (5/5)

The cast deserves an award for this story. They are amazing!

I had to quit after 10 mins (1/5)

The voice acting was horrible

Interesting (4/5)

This was an interesting podcast. I wasn’t expecting the production quality which was really good. The content itself was pretty good, interesting story of empanadas! Haha the end was unexpected. Let’s see if there is a follow up for this.

Horrifically hilarious (5/5)

This is such a great story. I can’t wait for season two. They’re definitely needs to be a season two. Daphne Rubin-Vega acting is AMAZING!!! in this audio podcast. The character of Luis is hilarious his comedic timing is so on point. This is the type of audio podcast story I like to hear. It screams New York while still telling a interesting new stories. Hopefully if all pans out this could be transferred into a Netflix series. I think there is definitely an audience for the cast and for this series. It’s so in tune and current with what is actually going on in New York and so many other places around the country actually.

Fun Halloween morsel (4/5)

Daphne Rubin-Vega is amazing! I could listen to her for hours... in fact I have! The story is obviously not for the squeamish, sorta In The Heights meets Sweeney Todd without the music. Every performance is outstanding but Ms. Rubin-Vega steals the show!

Great audio (5/5)

Crazy story line, voices were perfect for the story being depicted. It was hilarious, and gross. But I loved it , it kept me hooked.

So Macabre and so good! (5/5)

This podcast is “delicious”. If you like ‘movies like “Rating Raoul” or “Sweeney Todd”, you’ll like this one.

热腾腾 (2/5)

Captivating (5/5)

This is soooo good. I finished this 2 days ago and I'm still thinking about it. Definitely a MUST listen.

I love Gimlet (5/5)

You guys this is wild- it’s like I’m watching a play with my ears!!! That statement is about weird as this podcast. I’m really enjoying it but it’s kind of crazy, I don’t think I’d like to see it acted out. Keep doing what you’re doing Alex and team. The diversity of your programming keeps me listening. Thanks!!

Great (5/5)

Really well done.

Meh (3/5)

Story is ick. Storytelling is great.

I love this (5/5)

Im only on Episode 2 right now, but this story is fvkn EPIC!!! I absolutely love it

So good until it went so wrong (2/5)

I was loving this show! Great, surprising, gripping. And then it went antisemitic. Why?! Why did you use old and super offensive stereotypes of Jews? Why a greedy, money hungry Jew as the landlord? Really disappointing.

Ohhhhh myyyy (4/5)

This was very well written, amazing performances, gripping horrifying story and SO MESSED UP. I’m not sure if I loved it or hated it but I binge listened in one day.

Well done but kinda messed up (1/5)

Extremely well done from a story telling and production standpoint, but the subject matter and graphic nature of the podcast go to far.

Sweeny Todd Rip Off (1/5)

This is pretty racist and a total ripoff of the storyline from sweeny todd... I will say your voice actors are really talented.

Accidental Spoiler (4/5)

Loved the show! But the ad at the end of episode 7 kind of spoiled the ending of episode 8!

Edge of my seat (5/5)

This story is excellent. Felt like I was watching a movie. Can’t wait for more.

Gold! (5/5)

So intriguing! I can’t believe how engulfing a story about murder and cannibalism is.

Good but gross sounds sometimes (4/5)

I really liked it a lot! Very descriptive and the voice actors do a great job. Only thing that was irritating was listening to them talk while they ate or smoked. I know it was part of the plot but it was like constantly one or the other during the dialogue which was a bit much. The sounds of someone eating I just find incredibly irritating.

Muy Loco (5/5)

Great show, great characters, just worried if this podcast catches on that the lines will be too crazy to get the good empanadas

Love it! (5/5)

This is the first gimlet series I’ve listened to And I loved it. The voice actors are so talented and the story line is easy to follow, interesting, and unpredictable. I really felt like I was watching a movie - they know how to create an atmosphere for their listeners. Will be checking out more of their stuff!!!

Entertaining as well (5/5)

This is super entertaining has me hooked. All these weinies saying its gross or corney wouldn’t know quality storytelling if came up and turned them into a empanada

The Barber of Seville (5/5)

Love it.

Graphic, macabre and oddly humorous. (5/5)

This piece is well written, the acting is excellent, but be prepared for a rather graphic storyline. Spoiler alert, If you enjoyed Sweeney Todd then you will enjoy this story.

Meh (1/5)

I didn’t like it from the beginning but forced myself to listen and still didn’t like it.

Phenomenal Work (5/5)

Great writing and warned, it’s Gory (think Barber of Seville). Great emotional moments, very moving and unsettling in the best way.

Love it!!!! (5/5)

I love it. It’s like a modern day Sweeney Todd.

Pleasant surprise! (5/5)

I loved this show! I downloaded it in the hopes it would be good and SURPRISE it was GREAT. kept me on my toes! I look forward to listening to more stuff like this

Super Dooper! (5/5)

This was awesome, very good writing and awesome delivery by voice. Actually gave me the chills a couple of times. Very well done and should be made into a movie. A talented bunch you all are. Thanks for digging deep!

Best Gimlet Fiction sofar (5/5)

Especially in terms of atmosphere and suspense. I will it admit the macabre nature of it won’t appeal form everyone but it’s in the same vein of Sweeney Todd. The attention to detail along with some fantastic performances produce the first gimlet fictional podcast I can truly loose myself in. It has a consistent and thrilling narrative thrusts, where all elements of the production are really work together under the same vision to support the plot. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this optioned.

Captivating (5/5)

My new favorite Podcast, so descriptive and captivating it’s so better than what’s on T.V. You guys did a fantastic job with this one. It’s pure perfection

Creepy good (5/5)

This is a must listen. I feel like I’m there the actors did a wonderful job!!

Vivid (5/5)

Wow. This is so vivid it’s like watching a movie. Just how descriptive and the sound affects just make it like it’s surrounding you. The writers and voice actors are absolutely amazing.

This had me at Bobby Cannavale :) (5/5)

Love it. You can picture each scene as you’re listening. Half-way through the episodes and can’t wait to binge the rest.

Delores Roach (5/5)

Amazing!!! (5/5)

Found by accident and devoured (haha) in 24-hours. Excellent and I want more!!!!

Delores Roach Pulls The Listener In (5/5)

The Horror of Delores Roach is one of those stories that had me’s not often a fictional narrative can hold my attention but this did. Take a listen, you’ll be hooked on the characters story lines!

Tasty! (5/5)

Great entertainment!

Spellbound (5/5)

Halfway through and I’m loving everything about this podcast: the story, the delivery, and I can’t wait to hear more! I’m trying to ration and not finish it one day!

Anti-Semitic (1/5)

Please take this hateful thing down, especially in light of today's events in Pittsburgh. This podcast uses historical anti-semitic stereotypes to portray the villainous, money-grubbing landlord. Deeply hurtful. Spectacularly anti-semitic.

Five stars!!! (5/5)

I loved this!! It’s an urban version of Sweeney Todd, please have a season 2!!!

Why you gotta be Anti-Semitic? (2/5)

So I wanted to like this. I was good for most of 3 episodes but why make the landlord a greedy Jew who tries to take advantage of and also victimized the main character? I noticed that many other minorities were represented without being portrayed as offensive stereotypes. Pretty disappointing. The story was really interesting until it just turned into a lame racist Sweeney Todd. I expected better of gimlet.

Disturbing, excellent actors (5/5)

An homage to the demon barber

Wow!!! (5/5)

One of the best podcasts I’ve heard in a long time.

A rare miss (2/5)

It's very similar to Sweeney Tod, but with weird cannibal porn instead of song. Everything that seems like a potential story goldmine just randomly runs dry, as if the writer(s) had no idea what to do next so opted for scorched earth.

Great listen! (5/5)

Thoroughly enjoyed all eight episodes, Delores painting me a mighty fine picture. Couldn’t believe how much it was like a film playing in my head. Loveeeew

Spin on Sweeney (5/5)

LOVED IT! An updated spin on Sweeney Todd. Binged listened to it and loved every second of it!

Amazing! (5/5)

You guys should do more podcasts! This podcast is amazing and I’ve only finished the first episode. The audio quality is great, story is suspenseful and gripping, and I love how the story is told.

I'm hooked (5/5)

This audio drama is Homecoming binge worthy. I listen in my car and often times find myself sitting in my car, after arriving at my destination, finishing the episodes. AWESOME!!!

Disturbing, problematic, and just not very good (2/5)

I'm a huge fan of Gimlet and have been following their story since day 1. Homecoming and Sandra were real page turners so I was excited to see that they released a new fiction horror serial. It started out really good with interesting characters and great sound design. And got weird. And then gross. And then graphic. And then MORE graphic. And all in all very disturbing. Honestly, I wish I hadn't listened to this at all because it's stayed with me in a bad way. I have the impression that the script writer felt compelled to one-up himself with every episode in terms of disturbing content. Pure shock value without substance. Also, the orthodox Jewish landlord character was very problematic. They might as well have described him as having a hook nose and horns. Seriously. All in all a disapointment.

Whoa (5/5)

I normally listen to podcasts to become background noise while I get ready for bed, but this one stayed in the foreground! I had to force myself to stop listening to go to bed. It was perfect for the medium because it was succinct but not too edited down. The acting is good, and it’s well-written. I feel like I know Delores, and I don’t even hate her I just feel sympathy for her. There is a lot of nuance, but it’s not overly intellectual. Also, I’m pretty sure Luis is the detective from Dexter and he was perfect for the role. Best scripted podcast I’ve listened to. (Only one I’ve finished.)

Dark humor (5/5)

This podcast is really well done. The acting is fantastic.

Amor (5/5)

I enjoy all the characters like I enjoy eating empanadas:)

Was Hoping For Better (1/5)

After listening to Homecoming and loving it, I was really looking forward to this podcast. I was very disappointed. It was too heavily narrated for my taste and the characters seemed overdone, almost caricaturish. The sex, violence and language was just gratuitous. I didn't buy into Dolores' motivation for killing. And what was the point of Luis' penis problem? Not a well crafted tale. I've been enjoying all the great content coming out of Gimlet, but this one was a clunker.

What? (1/5)

I had a hard time understanding this podcast. What was the actual point of it? It’s disgusting and gory and it had no purpose. I didn’t finish the last episode because I just couldn’t so maybe there’s an explanation at the end; I’ll never know. What I did enjoy about this podcast was the way it was produced. It’s kind of like listening to a play combined with an audiobook. What I mean by that is each character is played by a different person/voice and you can hear their movements in the background such as footsteps or doors closing.

Gimlet Does it Again (5/5)

Love listening to this show. A movie for the ears. Nice follow up to Sandra.

Wow (5/5)

Crazy how soothing this story is while working at my desk. It’s calming actually. Great job!!!!!

Starts off amazing, but falls flat in the last act (3/5)

I got into this podcast real fast. I found my self sticking around in my parked car just finishing episode. Unfortunately, the last act praising the last three episodes seems like it was written by a different author and is very rushed.

Perfect for Halloween (5/5)

As a dude whose a horror junkie, I’m always looking for new things to scare me. This definitely fits the bill. It’s brilliantly curated and so creative. It’s creepy and incredibly easy to get sucked into. Highly recommend it.

First Podcast I have ever listened to 😳😳 (5/5)

Blown away. Acting, Storyline and Characters were totally awesome. Expected to listen to first episode, be bored and turn it off. Instead I binge watched every episode and was so disappointed when it was over. Absolutely Fantastic. This deserves 10 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Modern take on Sweeney Todd (4/5)

Perfect listen for Halloween

Fun listen (4/5)

Funny little story. Good for a Halloween listen...but don’t expect too much ;)

Bad people doing bad things for bad reasons (2/5)

Great acting, great production, but the story is boring. Painful in fact. Almost nothing happens in each episode!!! It's a slow ugly mess of people psychologically abusing one another and shifting blame for their own actions. Depraved people doing depraved things. Their motivation is only vaguely portrayed so sometimes it feels like a "so random" gimmick. There are some potentially interesting ideas but I cannot identity with any of these ugly cruel irrational characters. I hung in there and listened to the whole thing, because generally I love Gimlet shows. But the reason I love them is for their smart content and I can't say there's much that seems smart about this. Just some sh***y characters with sh***y impulse control. Are the sex scenes supposed to be erotic or disturbing? They're certainly unsexy and off-putting, provoking feelings of sensuality which are immediately quenched by utter disgust, culminating in an ugly scene of sexual bullying. Our heroine blames someone for her own complicity to do evil, and she focuses all her rage in verbal attacks on that person's sexuality, where they are most insecure. I'm really not sure if it was supposed to strike us as ironic ("can you believe this b***h?!") or liberating ("this a**hole deserves it!"... which isn't valid--no one deserves to be psychologically abused about their sexuality). Maybe it's a cautionary tale: one bad choice can lead you into a world of s***. But I learned that lesson in my 20s. Perhaps young listeners will have more fun. But I will spend the next few days trying to forget this experience.

Just OK for me (3/5)

Really interesting story but too many plot lines seem to not come to a close at the end. Doesn't seem to need a second season. The conclusion is a bit confusing.

Sooo annoying! (1/5)

Too many f words even for me. Sorry but Dolores’ voice annoyed me.

Awesome! You wont be disappointed! (5/5)

I love scripted podcasts! Most are terrible and super cheesey but I enjoy the sound design anyway. This podcast however is amazing! It totally set a new standard for me. Exctied to hear what will follow after this.

Creepy creepy creepy (5/5)

So well done, I was hooked from the start. I’ve never liked horror but this is good. So glad this isn’t true crime!!!

Can’t turn away! (5/5)

Pulls you in. You gain a bond with Dolores. It’s Twisted!!

Entertaining (4/5)

It was good until the horrible rushed, weird ending.

Gross (1/5)

I love everything Gimlet does, but this is repulsive. The descriptions of cannibalism is too much. The rest of the storyline is great, but I’m done. Can’t stand another minute of hearing about people eating flesh.

Loved this! (5/5)

Man! This was thrilling! It was soooooo hard to stop listening! Great writing! Great voice overs! They sound sooo realistic! Just awesome!

I dig it. (5/5)

Really great, as usual from Gimlet. The sexual detail was a bit much, but otherwise loved the series.

Dolores Roach (5/5)

I’ve been binging on this since 8 am while a drive through the Sierra foothills. It’s soooooo good, do yourselves a favor and get on it .

Awesome (5/5)

I enjoyed this podcast soooo much. I’ve never written a review but this podcast was gritty, real, scary and exciting. Loved it! I wanna hear more!

Crazy af. I love it!!! (5/5)

Quality drama/audio/voices/characters/writing. #VeggieEmpanadasPaSiempre

Spooky (5/5)

Definitely creepy but really well done. It really pulls you in and you feel like you are there... or at least in her head.

Need more now (5/5)

This was like Dexter but NYC. So good.

Uh... (1/5)

Overall pretty terrible.

I devoured this podcast! (5/5)

Anyone who is a fan of the legend/story/musical Sweeney Todd needs to listen to this! Expertly directed/written/produced and Daphne Rubin-Vega is a FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH! Excellent job!!

yasyasyas (5/5)

she’s a ny baddie and she gotta do what she gotta do 🤷🏼‍♂️

Wow - one of the best fiction Podcasts ever (5/5)

Thought I was going to check out one episode.. I legit just binge listened this sitting at my desk at work. I audibly gasped in a few places and was so zoned out my colleague just snuck up on me and scared the crap out of me she noticed I was in the zone.. she got me).

Wow (5/5)

First review ever (5/5)

So I normally don't bother to take the time to review podcasts, but this podcast showed up unexpectedly and has thoroughly hooked me! There are lots of other podcasts that I love and definitely should review, but this one is so different because I heard the first episode as a "preview" on another podcast, so I wasn't expecting much, but as I got through the first episode I was enraptured! I love the premise, and more importantly I love the perspective and how our main character isn't who you'd typically hear from in a horror story.

Very Good (5/5)

This podcast took me by surprise! A very addictive listen. Started episode 1 when I got into work, and finished the entire thing. The cast is very good at bringing you into this world and imagining for yourself what the characters look like and the environment that they live in.

Yes! (5/5)

I am instantly obsessed!

I’m diggin’ this! (5/5)

This is a lot of fun!

Too Much Swearing (2/5)

In real life, people that use the f-bomb every other word annoy me to death. This is Dolores. Seriously, it’s comical how much she uses it. I get it, they’re going for grittiness. I just found it obnoxious. The voice acting and sound design are great, though.

No thanks (1/5)

Can’t stand the girls voice. Uneducated hood rat idiot doesn’t make for an appealing story

GRAPHIC content.... (2/5)

NSFW. There were warnings prior to the episodes (yay!), but listeners should be prepared for graphic, explicit, (and somehow also blasé?) descriptions of murder and sex. I stopped listening halfway through (nothing uplifting about it at all), but if you are a parent, DO NOT let your kids download this....just trust me....

Wow... (5/5)

Loved this podcast. Thank you!!

Astonishing! (5/5)

Just from the little teaser for this show I was already really interested. By the end of the eighth episode I found myself standing in the middle of the kitchen with my mouth agape. The cast is phenomenal. Daphne Rubin Vega stoke the show in particular. I’m really excited to hear more from Dolores.

Bluh (2/5)

Couldn’t get past the first episode. Too much cussing for the 5 minutes I listened to it

I tried. After 3 episodes, I give up (1/5)

I love Gimlet but this was kinda cheesy. You win some and you lose some, keep trying.

I was hopeful (3/5)

I was hopeful and intrigued after the first few eps but after I finished I feel it was a waste of time. NOT as much of a waste as Sandra was but still. I’m done with Gimlet fiction

New twist on a classic (5/5)

A modern and very well done twist on the classic story of Sweeny Todd. Love that the protagonist is female in this one!

Please undress to the level of your comfort (5/5)

I’ve been following Daphne Rueben-Vega since the early 90’s and her great single When You Love Someone and of course Rent. But she’s not the only great actor on this podcast Margaret Cho and Bobby Cannevalle too. Just wow! I listen to 15 to 20 hours of podcasts a week so if it’s not great I don’t bother. This is the best fiction podcast I’ve heard yet. I’ve been bingeing it like crazy in one day I’m already at episode 8. What a treat.

So entertaining! (5/5)

Listened to all the episodes in one day. (5/5)

So good (5/5)

Love it!!!

Okay podcast (3/5)

This podcast was good up until midway through the series. It just got too dramatic and didn’t make sense.

Oppression Justifies Murder? (1/5)

This is an embarrassing story of SJW ideology attempting to justify murder. If I were to guess, the writers are hardcore leftists trying to describe their wet dream of ridding the world of their ‘oppressors.’ The victim mentality is taken to the extreme in this story. The writers should try again without lacing in their psychopathic views on society - maybe then there would be a main character that non-psychotic listeners could empathize with.

Awesome (5/5)

God job

Yaaas! (5/5)

I had no idea this would be about Washington Heights (my life-long hood) and it's very good. Ruben-Vega is great and the other voice acting is top-level.

What a waste of time (1/5)

Was hoping it would get interesting. But after 90 minutes I quit.

Great Gimlet Production-Average Stop (3/5)

I REALLY wanted to like this -- I am big fan of the genre-- but much like Homecoming, the production was dope-- but the story was thin.

Terrific fun!!! THANK YOU DELORES💕💋😂😈

Gentrification as horror... (5/5)

Fascinating. A horror story - or, gentrification as viewed from a former incarcerated young woman from Washington Heights who’s been in jail while New York City has evolved...

So fantastic (5/5)

I can't even with this one, I didn't expect it to take the turn it did and I was completely hooked after that.

Good podcast (3/5)

Maybe listen to the whole thing before you recommend it to coworkers.

Just listen. I promise its addictive. (5/5)

OMG I LOVE THISSSSSSS! daphne rubin-vega is FANTASTIC . She executes her role so poetically, shes just amazing. The other actors fit so seamlessly well into this story. Gimlet we need seasons upon seasons please :)

Amazing ! (5/5)

This podcast is so well written and very high quality ! I can’t stop Listening ! It’s scary , creepy , thrilling , and mysterious .

Wow (5/5)

Good characters and phenomenal voice acting

Sweeney Todd meets Cheech and Chong (4/5)

This story us wild!!

This will take you by surprise... (5/5)

I expected to last ten minutes into episode one before pronouncing it another badly acted and badly written dramatization. In actuality, I was captivated within the first 60 seconds. The production is spot on, the story raw and emotive, and the actors are stunning. I’ve never binged a podcast, until now.

Excellent show (5/5)

This was awesome! The writers did great job, the characters were very interesting. I hope there is another season. It was really captivating and kept my attention.

Amazon ad spoiler but great show (4/5)

Enjoyed it very much, don’t usually listen to fiction podcasts. Great cast, however - please note that one of your Amazon advertisements literally contains a spoiler for the ending which seems like a huge oversight and just bizarre. But still enjoyed despite.

Well acted, falls flat (3/5)

There is so much to like about this, but the story drags after the first few episodes. Also, the amount of commercials is exceptionally annoying. If you take away credits, theme music, and ads, only 50% remains as actual content.

No (1/5)

Such trash. Annoying narrator. F’ing F word this and F word F’ing that.

Great editing/great voice actors/BS story (3/5)

Characters are a tad corny and a bit too on their face obvious but it’s still ok to listen to.

So-so (2/5)

Pretty mediocre story, been done before! Daphne Rubin-Vega is somewhat hard to take but Bobby Cannavale is awesome like always. What really bothers me is the attempt to be artsy with the music. The Piano and bass just gets annoying. I’m half way through and will probably finish but I can’t say I’d recommend it.

Tangled Earbuds 58 (5/5)

Love Bobby Cannavale and Daphne Rubin Vega is good too. I like this series. I am intrigued. Good voice work.

Not a fan (1/5)

In the first 20 minutes you have to listen to someone eating. Almost turned it off right there. So disgusting. I pushed through, but by the end of episode one, I was done. Didn’t care about the story at all.

Original & Great Show (4/5)

This is not really a horror podcast but it is great. It has the same pacing and musical feel of Oz but with over the top fantastical murder. It is very original and definitely worth a listen. This is by far the best audio drama Gimlet has made yet.

LOVE (5/5)

I absolutely love all of Gimlets fictional podcasts- Homecoming was incredible, Sandra was absolutely spectacular, and I am OBSESSED with the horror of Delores Roach. They’re each unique and I can’t pick my favorite

So, so horrible. And not in a good way. (1/5)

Hey @abexlumberg Remember that podcast where you said you lie awake at night and worry that Gimlet is going to fail? Keep producing crap like Delores Roach andfailure is a guarantee.

Fabulous (5/5)

Listened to all 8 episodes today at work, could not stop playing them!

Exceptional (5/5)

Talent is incredible, writing is fantastic. I was anxious it would be too graphic for me. It’s not. It’s suspenseful and character-driven and deeply, DEEPLY creepy. I’ve binged it (not quite finished yet) and recommended it to all my friends. Daphne Rubin-Vega is so compelling. Worth every star of five.

Engaging, Funny, Horrific (5/5)

Listen to this podcast. Perfect for Halloween. Daphne Rubin-Vega is wonderous!

Female Narrator identity? (3/5)

It struck me from the first moment I listened that the female narrator sounds like Esther from the podcast “Once Upon A Crime | True Crime” Will the creator of this podcast please confirm or deny this? Thank you in advance for your prompt response.

Wow (5/5)

Crazy, yummy, good. This has left me with an insatiable appetite for more!

This should win ALL the awards! (5/5)

The best writing and acting, great score and even funny commercials.

V Visual (5/5)

Subscribed solely for the cover art... amazing!

Love it! (5/5)

First time writing a review but I really want this show to come back for season 2. It’s such a great story line very bingable!

Friggin’ awesome and riveting (5/5)

I love this Podcast!! Didn’t think it could measure up to Homecoming but I love Dolores Roach after episode 1!

Biting social commentary — in more ways than one (5/5)

The best Gimlet production in a long time. Smart, satirical and a little spooky.

So good!! (5/5)

Thank you for releasing the entire season. I listened to it all the way through. The lead character did AN. AMAZING. JOB.

Dolores really grows on you (5/5)

Great story and voice acting.

Absolutely awesome (5/5)

This was an AMAZING podcast. Listened to all of the episodes in one sitting while sitting at work.

Just Listen.

I don’t think hello fresh thought this through (5/5)

Zzzz (1/5)

What is the point of this? It’s not interesting at all. Only 3 episodes in, but considering giving up.

Awesome show (5/5)

This is great show!! It starts great! The middle is great, and it ends.... AW SNAP!! That ending!!

I am in love!! (5/5)

I love Dolores!! Great story and acting.

Great Acting, Solid Writing, w some problems (4/5)

The acting is wonderful and the production quality is great. The thriller qualities of the writing are strong, while the dialogue is a little repetitive in the first few episodes, it gets better as the series goes on. There’s some problematic/triggering language around LGBTQIA ppl and fat-shaming in the first few episodes. It’s done in a way that implies the audience should let those moments go because the characters do, but I found it somewhat frustrating and disappointing.

Daphne Rubin-Vega kills it (5/5)

I’ve never heard acting like this in a podcast before. Unreal, chilling, human and creepy as hell. Love this so much.

🙄 (1/5)

The scariest part of this is having to listen to it. Literally the worst. Try again

Pure genius! (5/5)

Exactly what I needed. The characters come to life with each line. One warning though. You WILL crave empanadas in the beginning. Then maybe not so much. 🤣

Amazing! (5/5)

Just finished this series, hope there is more. So good! Really enjoyed this. Had me hooked the whole time.

Roach for President! (5/5)

I came across this podcast by accident & I LOVE it I’m on the last episode & I want MORE Dolores!

Gritty and gripping (5/5)

Delores is a tale of murder amidst the equally dark and devastating effects of gentrification. Delores, determined to live “above board” after serving 16 years in prison returns to her old hood to find that virtually nothing is the same. What follows is her homicidal descent into madness and seclusion underground. I found this podcast as a recommendation on my morning commute to work. Here I am now back at home and I managed to listen to the entire show in one day. This show has excellent vocal talent, writing, sound effects and scoring. Be prepared to get sucked in!

Reminded of a certain barber who lived on Fleet Street... (3/5)

So far so good. I’m on episode 3. The acting is great. I’m loving the characters. But I’m kinda mad no one told me this was gonna be a new take on Sweeney Todd. Feeling a little duped... Just like realizing halfway through Warm Bodies that I was watching yet another version of Romeo and Juliette... Just tell me so I know! It’s never a good surprise...

Thumbs up (5/5)

Well done.

Best Fictional Podcast Series! (5/5)

I enjoyed Homecoming Season 1, but this is AMAZING! I was absolutely captivated. Worth every second. Praying for a second season!!!

Was scared listening (5/5)

I was listening on my run in the park and as it got darker I lost myself into the story and could feel the tensions and suspense build. Especially in some of the more gruesome scenes. Great job! Hope there’s a season two.

Woah...episode 3! (5/5)

This podcast has me totally enthralled. A GREAT listen for those who love story telling and crime. A great cast with FINALLY truly diverse voices.

Great!! (5/5)

Love this show! The sound is impeccable!

Yes!! (5/5)

Listened to every episode today! Great great show. Im ready for more.

Great job (4/5)

Listening to this is like watching a movie, it’s a great way to relax while multitasking.

—- —- —- Ok I am halfway through but this is pretty clearly a Sweeney Todd parody.

The Demon Masseuse of Amsterdam Ave (4/5)

Very different than the other scripted Gimlet podcasts. A little weird, but once I realized it's Sweeney Todd in Washington Heights with the roles reversed I started enjoying it.

Awesome turned unusual (5/5)

I gave his 5 stars because the narrator is so good! She is a great voice actress. She makes you feel exactly what she is going through. I love when she describes situations and scenarios. I love the story in the beginning but then it turns weird/creepy. I binged this podcast! The ending was odd. Overall the writing was great!

Amazing! (5/5)

The best fiction podcast! Gimlet has out did themselves yet again! Thanks Gimlet for the content!

Sweeney Todd rip-off (3/5)

It’s just a mediocre Sweeney Todd rip off. Don’t go out of your way to listen

shaking !!!!! (5/5)

I just finished up the first episode and i can’t wait to get off work and binge this thing because i’m literally shakkkinnggg at my desk. fiction podcasts are hit or miss but i think gimlet might have a hit with this one!

game-changer......... (5/5)

every once in a while a podcast comes along that is so groundbreaking, so revolutionary, that it redefines the very idea of what the medium can do.......... this is one of those podcasts. like nothing you've ever heard. i'd give it 10 stars if i could. also empanadas are delicious

Sooooo good (5/5)

A Must listen for the Halloween season

Nothing like it (5/5)

Dark and twisted. Never heard a podcast like this one. Friggin awesome.

1st ep has me like whoah (5/5)

Daphne & Bobby sound so good! Waiting for it to get spooky

AHHH My New Favorite Fiction Podcast! (5/5)

OK, so if I'm being totally honest–I'm not the biggest fan of fiction podcasts. I am a die-hard podcast nerd, but when it comes to audiodrama—I'm lukewarm. HOWEVER— This podcast is incredible. Legitimately, insanely amazing. The sound design alone should win an award. The writing is powerful, insightful and scary as heck. The acting is also amazing (I mean, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Bobby Cannavale? Are you KIDDING ME? THEY ARE BOTH SO GOOD). And plus a whole bunch of other amazing people that are in a couple episodes here and there. I'm not kidding you I binged this whole thing in one sitting. It also is...truly scary. Like, don't listen to this show in the dark. Unless you're braver than I am, which you definitely might be. All is to say—this. show. Is. amazing. LISTEN TO IT. I love a lot of Gimlet stuff, so I'm happy to report that this is yet another thing that they've done exceedingly well. Hats off to you!

New favorite fiction show! (5/5)

Must listen!! Such an incredibly produced show, love everything Gimlet does!

Amazing Audio (5/5)

The combo of Daphne + Bobby and the sound design makes this go above and beyond anything else you'll hear in a podcast.

The right amount of spooky (5/5)

I’m hooked after listening to the first episode! Daphne Rubin Vega is mesmerizing as Dolores. I can’t wait to binge listen. The timing is perfect... I love the spooky, yet endearing quality of Dolores. Will be sharing with friends!

SO GOOD (5/5)

My favorite fiction show so far. IT’S INCREDIBLE!

👍🏽👍🏽 (5/5)

It’s so good!! You guys are going to love it!

Yes!! (5/5)

Daphne Rubin-Vega is a goddess!
