For many people today, science has become chic - but for many people, modern advances in various scientific fields is not something everyone can easily grasp while reading journals or peer research. Enter the Naked Scientists. Each episode features the panel of experts who break down the latest news, trends and theories, as well as provides answers for listener-submitted questions ... all presented in plain English for the regular folk to understand. And it’s all presented with a lighthearted sense of humor and wit. And for some of us outside of the UK, listening to people with British accents tends to have a calming effect, I’m guilty of it.
I've been listening to this podcast for a year now and just got around to reviewing it. It is my go to podcast when I feel like learning something new. This guy knows so much. W
Learning so much science on this podcast. Very engaging and educational!
I'm a chemistry PhD graduate stufent and I'm thoroughly impressed by the balance between telling a scientific story accurately through the eyes of researchers and making sure the story is relatively staightforward to understant!
Love the way you make Science accessible to the general public! I'm a faithful subscriber. Keep up the good work!
Great podcast about science news, with a great cast of presenters and show variety (news, questions from listeners, news from science fairs, etc). The refinements to the show-new music, etc are great. I always long for the next episode. Good web site, too. Thanks guys!
Like the show, good stuff.
I love that kids are so involved in this show, and it is presented at a level that adults can appreciate without a bunch of kid "antics"...
funny and informative..
I love the podcast as it has lots of very interesting stories that I wouldn't normally get. I used to only listen to Science Friday but now its good to have more sources of science in my life! Makes me sound super smart in conversations :)
Just what I was looking for - thank you!
No other podcast that I’ve found covers the full breadth of science news, along with in-depth conversations about the latest discoveries. I have friends who are actual scientists, and I am often more informed than they are about what’s going on in the science world thanks to Dr. Smith and the Naked Scientists team. I especially love the contributions of all of the female scientists on the show. Dr. Helen Scales is always a delight to listen to. Her passion for her field and joy of talking about science comes through in every episode she is a part of.
Dr. Chris Smith and the other Naked Scientists give me my weekly dose of science in fields that I don't follow. The story/science selection is very good and the show's staff are excellent reporters. The way they report on the stories keeps the show from getting dry, without trying to be funny.
I like the scope and quality of this program. It provides for user input, covers basic and advanced topics and helpful advice. Dr Chris Smith does other programs, too, and I'd listen to anything he works on. Thanks to him as well as everyone who works on this show.
Love the accents! Wonderful show, I need to go back to the beginning and start listening from then.
love these podcasts!!!
And then there was ONE. . . This appears to be the last Naked [fill in the Science] podcast. That's a shame. everyone one of them strove to bring you up[ to date discoveries and thoughtful recent commentary. But the most generic is by no means the least. They cover everything from Antarctic drilling, to archaeology, to behavioral science, to population studies, to genetic research and more beyond. Worth a serious listen.
Want proof? Listen to this podcast.
During the school year I do a lot of traveling. This is one of the handful of podcasts I LOVE listening to as I drive back and forth to school. Thanks SO much for making these available!!!
I've been listening to these podcasts for years, usually while I am hiking. Each one is informative and fascinating. What a wonderful way to inform the non-scientist about the phenomenal discoveries all around us. I love each of your host's unassuming manner, wit, and intellect. Usually when I return from my daily hike, I have been so absorbed, that I don't even realize I was exercising. Lots of times I wish I could recall everything discussed, but that is not possible. However, when a related conversation comes up with family or friends, I find that it all comes back to me. Thanks so much for helping me to be more informed. This is far and away my favorite podcast.
Great show for science lovers.
I enjoy the current science news and the kitchen science
I cannot say enough good things about this podcast! I'm hooked. Listen and you will be hooked too!!!
This is by far the best science show podcast peroid. The big difference, and what makes this show so good, is that the staff are highly educated scientists themselves, with the abillity and tallent to ask relevant and probing questions. Judge for yourself. Listen to a couple of shows of the Naked Scientist say compared to Science Friday. It's the difference between Chess and Checkers. The range of topics discussed and the level of discourse is fantastic.
Great podcast. I've been listening since 2006 and I still enjoy everything they post. Science is eternally relevant!
Got into this through the "Naked Astronomy " podcast (also brilliant) and am having the pleasure of going back through all the previous ones and there isn't a bad one!! Several different topics in each episode covered in detail but not overly technical. The guys who do this are light hearted but obviously very educated and erudite...subscribe!!!
One of the best science Podcast. This and Astronomy Cast are my most favorite shows. Full spectrum coverage for almost all subjects of science, and the English accents are quite charming too.
This podcast is interesting and the people on it even more so. Love to meet these guys one day.
Every once in a while you stumble on a gem that is so much more valuable than it may first appear - well the cast of Naked Scientist is even more than that very simple, inadequate analogy. They were wonderful from first exposure. Introducing science in the buff... I'm at a loss for for superlatives, so I'll just say thanks.
So good. I can listen to 3 or more in a row and not get bored. Its amazing how they talk about multiple topics in a show. That Is why I love it so much. It always holds my interest. Gotta love the accents!
That covers it.
I listen to the "enhanced" edition of this podcast. It's extremely intersting and presented in an entertaining way. Great job Dr. Chris & team!
Simply one of the best science podcasts out there. Full of humor and knowlegeable hosts.
I subscribed originally to listen with my kids. And while my kids loved to listen, I find I love to listen to the show even more. Great information, technical but explained in an easy to understand way. Love it love it love it
This was the first podcast that I subscribed to years ago and it is still the very best of them all. Funny, wiity, and extremely informative.
very good science podcast. If you're American just the accents are enough to entertain.
I adore this podcast. Not only do I have a mini college course in my car, I actually retain the information provided. Dr. Chris has a very down to earth persona. He can speak about the human genome or discuss boogies and going wee without arrogance. I recommend this podcast to anyone who has had trouble with classroom lecture...especially those with ADD. The scientist's accents are proper English and easily understood. Some of the callers...not so much. Tony is pretty annoying, but he means well.
A bit on the technical side; also callers going on and on but Dr. Chris Smith is nice and informed. My biggest beef is petty, so really not fair to the guys doing the podcast, but all the accents are so THICK for this American listener, that it becomes so distracting for me to listen to. It is too much work for my brain to follow along.
A general science podcast from Britain. They generally focus on a specific issue, but they're really good at answering interesting questions from listeners, such as "if I am holding my boyfriend's hand, will I get shocked if he gets tazered?" Sort of a mix between "reporting" and "conversation" styles.
I love this show. Interesting interviews, "kitchen science" experiments you can do at home and excellent hosts make this one of the best podcasts out there.
I enjoy this podcast - it's well produced, covers a wide range of science subjects, and produced well. The speakers are engaged and clear. It is almost as good as "This Week in Virology"!
I subscribe to a variety of science and skeptic shows and this is my favorite, all the latest science well explained. Interesting segments and good cast with Dr Chris. I'll read items later in print and recognize them from Naked. Great show guys!
Keep up the incredible work guys! I look forward to this podcast every week. You guys wake up rocking and don't stop rocking until you go to bed at night!!
Each show is filled with interesting news on a good variety of topics. The material is presented clearly and with enough detail to whet listeners appetite to learn more. The hosts are great, and the experiments are always fun. Something I love is listening to questions and comments from listeners all over the globe.
This is my family's favorite science podcast because we all like it, adults and kids. I'm surprised that even though the segments are pretty long, even my younger kids stay hooked in for the full episode every time.
Becoming too politically correct (AKA fashionable fascism). The same thing is now done better elsewhere without the agenda.
This is a great podcast, always keeps you entertained and teaches you something new every week. They speak at a slightly faster pace than other podcasts which helps you pay attention atleast for me...
This is a must listen podcast if you like science!!
Exactly what podcasts should be – intelligent, informative and entertaining. A broad range of scientific topics are covered in a fast paced yet easy to understand manner. Highly recommended.
This podcast offers a fantastic array of educational topics and is highly entertaining. I give a huge thumbs up to the Naked Scientists. Please keep up the great work...you are one of my favorites!!
VERY interesting podcast! I look forward every week to download the newest episode! They talk about a wide variety of things going on in the science world and presented in a way that everyone can understand. Ive found this podcast extremely addictive.... HIGHLY recommended to anyone who has any sort of interest in science.....
I'm re-posting this review because I accidentally deleted the other one I had written! This is by far my most-listened-to podcast, and I am a podcast junkie. The range of material covered in the show is remarkable, from quantum physics to psychology to botany to paleontology, and the cast of characters (all real people, of course) are always intelligent and often hilarious. I find myself talking to people about things I've learned on the show, even weeks later. I've written in with questions several times, and always get a really prompt reply from Dr. Chris, and once even had my question featured on air! Thanks to everyone involved for making such a GREAT show!
I'm an engineer from South Carolina. I throughly enjoy listening to the shows on my iPod while I walk for exercise. Very informative and the hosts are all excellent. I hope they keep up the good work for years to come.
This is the only podcast that I go above and beyond to listen to, they cover some of the greatest most interesting topics out there. It's so easy to understand what they talk about and their personalities are the greatest I have ever listened to. I would recomend this to anyone with any interest in some great and entertaining information.
I've listened to just about every science podcast out there and found The Naked Scientists to be the most informative, thought-provoking, and entertaining. I teach high school science and have found their simple experiments useful and I also broadcast segments in class for discussion and material introduction. Great work Dr. Chris and Dr. Helen! Thanks!
I look forward to this every week. One thing they do a little different is have listener questions at the end that they don't have the answers to. They ask for input and over the next couple of shows you hear listener theories and then finally what their research has turned up.
oh, my goodness, this podcast is amazing. i find so much new and awesome trivia, cool facts, and interesting news every time i listen. i love this podcast and i hope it never ends! i subscribed well after it was created so i'm currently in the process of filling all my free hours playing catch up. never a dull moment, never wish i had done anything else!! thanks so much!!!
i am a family gp in upstate new york, usa. this podcast is addictive. not only are the stories and topics great, but dr. chris and the regular cast are fun to listen to. i haven't listened to my radio since i downloaded the podcasts from itunes. science is great.
"Good Job" to all who are involved. This has become my favorite science podcast. I listen to it at my job and occasionally spend the whole day listening to the past episodes while I work. Dr. Chris and Dr. Kat explain things very well while still keeping it simple enough for anyone to understand and add just enough witty humor. I love kitchen science too. Keep up the good work!
Not only is the cast of The Naked Scientists charming and intelligent but it delivers knowledge in a fun and user-friendly way which has previously been achieved only by less informative programs and publications.
A very good podcast on science, with interesting characters, kitchen science and other questions, using informal language. You can get the last few years worth from their website. If you like this podcast, check out the Quirks and Quarks podcast,
This show addresses a variety of important issues that face science and medicine in Today's fast-changing world. It is very informative and a pleasure to listen to. This truly is a 'gem' and I recommend it to science folk and also non-science folk alike! A++++++
I keep a huge number of podcasts on my 80 GB iPod. While I don't get around to listening or watching many of them, I always listen to the Naked Scientists. Great stuff for conversations with my teenage sons, around the office, or chatting at a party. Also, as an engineer if find that many creative ideas come from connecting knowledge from many different areas. Your science podcast provides a wealth of fuel for the creative engineering process. Keep it up! Thanks for your effort to bring a great show to the iPod that I can listen to whenever I want.
Has a lot of interesting topics, especially the "Kitchen Science" portion of the show. Sometimes makes me wish my commute was just a few minutes longer!
Very informative. Why listen to your same play list when you can feed your brain. Great show, Thanks!
My favorite podcast!!! I especially love Dr. Chris's British accent and the way he know's every single fact about science ever. The show is extremely well-produced with organized topics, fun features, cool guest speakers and great humor. Plus, they actually answer your questions on air when you send them in. Keep up the good work!
Dr Chris seemed to know a little bit about everything actually pretty impressive. But how often can you get beat about the head with global warming/evironmentalism hysteria before you start to loose interest in the science of the show. Also all the other little segments of other comentators are often much lower quality of Kat(sp?) and Chris. Makes the show seem like a collage and just drones on. Click......unsubscribe.
It is embarrassing for me when a coworker hears the podcast intro and asks “what are you listening to?” If you’re like that, get past the name and enjoy a well organized, entertaining, and informative podcast with plenty of brilliant British character.
New to podcats, can't get enought of these guys. Interesting, fun and love those accents!
I'm a chemist and have subscribed to many science-based podcasts. This one is definately one of the best. It is a perfect mix of topics to entertain young students interested in science as well as inform professionals of the latest discoveries and techniques. It is obvious that the entire crew at Naked Scientists have fun and work well together. The result is this informative and entertaining show.
If you want to learn about curren happenings in science, this podcast is for you. If you want to know the why and how behind everyday phenomena, this podcast is for you too. If you want silly wordplay delivered by some very smart people with British accents, you too will enjoy this podcast. I learn something every week!
I have subscribed to more than a dozen science podcasts. Naked Scientists is my favorite, by far. The Kitchen Science segment is always amazing: who would have thought you could measure the speed of light with a microwave oven? And the regulars, Dr. Chris, Dr. Cat, et al. are smart, funny, and great fun to hear every week. Their light hearted feuding is entertaining, too. (Who's got smelly feet ...! )
A superior podcast with inquisitive and intelligent hosts. Dr. Smith (with his wonderfully puerile sense of humor) and learned co-hosts sift through many scientific journals to share many studies and recent breakthroughs-and conduct "kitchen experiments" to illuminate otherwise difficult physical principles. There is a great rapport betwixt the hosts and you learn without even realizing it. Just great.
My favorite Podcast by far. Quite entertaining. Tons of information given by a group of pleasant, well educated brits. An easy science experiment is featured in each cast. Best of all, it is free. Why not give it a try?
This podcast is one I always make sure to listen to becuase it is both educational and entertaining. The hosts are fun to listen to and the information that they share is always interesting. The range of topics is quite wide and the level of detail just about right. If you want more, the Nature podcast covers many of the topics in even greater detail.
Science news, great topics, good explanations, presented by people who seem to enjoy talking, doing and sharing science. keep up the good work!
It's a joy to listen to people who question the wonder of the world we live in and ask why, and then go find an answer. You don't just report scientific findings but also connect the dots. You provide a good mix of questions I find in my daily life and topics I wouldn't run accross in a million years. I enjoy the banter between the hosts and, I have to admit, your wonderful British accents make it that much more easy to listen to. Please keep it up and expand it if possible. Thanks much.
The hosts are delightful with playful danter between them. On a rare instance, the guest speaker may not be the premier authority on a subject, but hosts make up for it with their own knowledge. The range of topics has been wonderful, from aeronautics to marine biology to armageddon. This is my favorite science podcast without question and I would highly recommend it.
The naked scientist with Dr. Chris is always educational; it covers a broad range of science. Dr. Chris uses his gift to make complex topics easy to comprehend and still manages to get to a useful level of detail. Most of the experience that Dr. Chris has is in the medical field, but he has a broad knowledge in other areas and clearly does research before each show, combining that with the guests on the show you knowledge across most scientific fields. The “kitchen science" spot also gives you a chance to predict how some pretty straightforward will work.
I've been listening to this podcast for about a year, and am getting caught up on the archives. TNS is a British radio show that gives current science tidbits, recorded and live interviews with scientists in all fields imaginable, kitchen science experiements (some of which I have done with my kids), and much entertainment. As a graduate level chemist, I love the science I learn from other fields, although sometimes the hosts are not quite in the right when they answer questions, but usually it is quite informative. Sometimes the hour flies by, although I will admit, sometimes it drags. Definitely a great podcast overall!
Great podcast! Lots of interesting and up to date information given in an easily understood manner. Dr. Smith is one smart guy! This is one of my favorite science podcasts.
I love this podcast! It covers all areas of science from cancer to alternative fuels to volcanoes to survival in extreme conditions....and even some quirky gee whiz questions, such as why your TV gets interference when you use an electric toothbrush plugged in the same outlet or why a needle will float on top of water when wrapped in a thin layer of paper towel. Really interesting to listen to during my commute.
This is a great podcast. I wish it came out more often.
This such an entertaining and educational podcast. Probably is the top three podcast that I listen to. I subscribe to close to 20. I listen to it on my commute every Wednesday and it makes the trip flyby. I wish it was on more often. They do an amazing job of presenting the information to even lay people like myself who are fascinated by science. I will make sure that when my son is old enough that he listens to your show to get a concept of what a science educator really should be. Keep up the great work!
This is one of the best. The Naked Scientists is particularly good for non-mavins in science since it is very good about providing stories about everyday science as well as new advances. The coverage of biological and medical stories is superb. The only thing tipping me away from giving the 5th star is the slightly weaker coverage on physics and astronomy --- though that coverage is still well above average -- and I would not think anyone interested in science would want to omit this great podcast.
This is not my favorite science podcast, but it's pretty good. What sours the whole experience is the use of a dash in the beginning of the title. It is clearly a spammy ruse to get placed in the top of alphabetical listings. Thankfully iTunes collation rules do the right thing and foil their sinister plot. I don't know if it is evil, stupidity or vanity, but it is unbecoming.
Awesome infotainment! Love the Norfolk accents!!!
I love this show. Its fun and entertaining, yet so educational. As a biologist, I love getting a weekly update of what's happening in other fields of science.
Out of all the science podcasts I've listened, this is probably the best. Dr. Chris always gets guests in to talk about their specialities, so every week, we get a different topic. Every episode proves to be interesting. Keep it coming!
Best scientific podcast on the internet by far. Truly addicting.
Yup, just like I said in the Title. One of my favorites.
I look forward to the Naked Scientists weekly podcasts. Chris & co make science fun and understandable to the layperson. I enjoy the fast-paced, multi-topical format.
So much better than the usual podcast, and light years better than the usual "science" show. Happily, the "naked ones" don't feel the need to present everything at fourth grade level, with bells and whistles and other junk...great stuff.
This is an excellent podcast. Interesting, engaging, accurate. This show represents quality work by people who understand that science is fun.
This is the best science show (radio or television) ever. It is both funny and informative, keeping even the most up-to-date scientists in the know in realms of science that we are not experts. The back and forth banter between Dr. Chris and Kat, Helen, and Petro is great and Chris's attitude to his caller's even most ridiculous questions is charming. Blows all other science shows out of the water. Dr. Chris Smith hosts the Nature Podcast as well, but it is not as long or funny.
This is a great science podcast. They cover it all. If there's something happening in science news, they will explain it for you. Physics, chemistry, biology, astromony... And they get interviews with some of the top minds in their fields. Amazingly, it's all done with a clever sense of humor. The homemade experiments are always fun as well. Great hosts, and it's constantly interesting.
Wow great quality product for free.Expand your mind while driving to work,Taking a long flight or train. From your body clock, To the avian flu, stem cells to parasities.Great mixed bag of everyday science.Love it
This is a great podcast for people of all ages, including kids. If you are curious about the world, this is the podcast for you!
Great fun. Always entertaining, silly and educational. Perfect for making those long runs go by fast.
Fantastic show - this and the "This Week in Science" podcast are in constant update on my iPod. Love these guys - brilliant show!
The single best science podcast in existence - very engaging and entertaining.
The Naked Scientists, led by the charismatic Dr. Chris Smith, provide a weekly dose of down-to-earth discussions on various scientific topics. Each week, two or three guest scientists provide expert answers to the sometimes highly-amusing questions called-in or emailed by listeners, patiently shepherded by the perpetually time-short Dr. Chris and his able cohorts. Criticisms of the show are small, but include the rather brief time (one hour) into which a huge amount of information is packed, and the brevity of some answers leaves one often wanting more. This show would definitely benefit by extending the run-time by perhaps 30 minutes. New for the 2005-2006 season is the Kitchen Science segment, in which young children (9 to 11) perform fun science experiments in the kitchen with the aid of Dave and Derek. This new segment, while perhaps less appealing to adult listeners, may provide their children with some fun motivation to learn about science. Parents wanting to expose their children to science would be well-advised to check out the Kitchen Science segment for ideas. In conclusion, The Naked Scientists are hands-down one of the best science podcasts you can find and well-worth the download. Let's hope they're around for many seasons yet.
This podcast comes to us from England. It is very informative with random science facts and tid-bits. It explains a wide variety of scintific areas. From biology to astronomy to physics, this well-produced podcast/ BBC Radio show couldn't get any better!
Entertaining and witty. There is so much info given out, in so many fields, that there should be something of interest for everyone. I am no longer listening to music on my ipod. I only hope the program continues past 2005. Never thought that "science" could be so pleasurable/interesting to listen to without being dull (kudos to the hosts). Although I am an American, I enjoy the "cockney" accents of the children that call up.
A great radio show from England that features wacky science facts, interesting experiments, and silly podcasters. I love listening to this every week!
